[Image description in Alt Text.] [ID: Red, block text on a transparent background. The text reads:Ā āFanfic Author PSAā. The dark red ArchiveĀ of Our Own logo is depicted on either side of the lettering. End ID.]
Many people who read fanfiction also require the assistance of text-to-speech or audio description software. Blind and visually impaired people are very much present in the fanfiction and fandom communities, but are so frequently disregarded or forgotten about.
If you are writing a work and like to utilise paragraph breaks, please do not use combinations such as the following:
[Image description in Alt Text. I have used an image to avoid what I will describe below.] [ID: Four examples of punctuation and icons that are disruptive when used as line breakers. The first line is a series of O letters. The second is a series of asterisks. The third is a series of dots, circles and stars. The last is a series of tildes. End ID.]
The software will read these combinations out loud letter for letter or symbol for symbol. For example; it would read to the user the word āasteriskā six times in a row, or the wordĀ ātildeā five times in a row.
This is unpleasant, confusing and often irritating for blind or visually impaired readers. If you would like a similar sample of what it would sound like, enter one of the above combinations into Google Translate and use the audio button.
Here is a post by @ao3commentofthedayā that also details this difficulty and provides links to downloadable audio transcribers and fanfiction audio readers. These are also helpful for if you simply wish to listen to fanfiction but canāt find a podfic of the work.
Screen Reader FriendlyĀ and Screen Reader Compatible are AO3 tags that help visually impaired readers track and access fanfiction that is consciously created with their needs in mind. Please consider adding these tags to your works in order to expand the range of works that visually impaired readers can safely and confidently access.
Alternatives to these are:
Utilise HTML or embedded line break functions where possible, such as the feature on the Archiveās editing functions. Most screen readers should be equipped to understand these.
[Line breaker] can also be read by most screen readers. While not as aesthetic, itās still functional.
Use an image divider/breaker and utilise the Alt Text or [ ] descriptor functions to label it as a line breaker.
Reminder:Ā ālikingā this post does not spread awareness.
archaeologists are still trying to figure out my gender but the current theory is that it was used for ritualistic purposes

gonna scream about these tags someone left on this post
honestly missionaries are evil. the idea of traveling the world to tell people Who Didnt Fucking Ask that their beliefs are wrong in the hopes that theyll adopt your beliefs seems sinister
The Christians in the notes whining are so absolutely stupid
I donāt even want to talk about how they specifically target poor people and hold basic necessities over their heads in exchange for faith.
āI read about an [Inuit] hunter who asked the local missionary priest, āIf I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?ā āNo,ā said the priest, āNot if you did not know.ā
āThen why,ā asked the [Inuit] earnestly, ādid you tell me?ā -Annie Dillard
(edited to remove slurs/dated language)
My culture and our religious practices (Inuit) have been decimated by Christianity and I fucking hate pretending its a neutral thing.
Christians in the notes still donāt get it. Theyāre saying that missionaries arenāt that bad bc theyāre just trying to save all ppl and theyāve started quoting bible verses and whatnot but hereās the thing: I. Donāt. Believe. In. That. Like your beliefs and scriptures are non applicable to me (and everyone else who isnāt Christian, or at least abrahamic) bc weāre not christian and I literally donāt care if you think we āneed to be saved from Satanā or smg bc frankly, itās not your business and that āwell meaning, innocentā intention is still forcing your religion onto us. OP is right. Missionaries are evil. Leave other religions tf alone.
One half of my family is Native Christians via forced conversion.
The other half is white Christians, including missionaries.
I can tell you that missionaries donāt just invalidate other religions (mainly indigenous religions) to try to convert people, they blatantly hold valuable resources hostage to convert people.
Theyāll provide books to communities with low literacy rates⦠but all the books are bibles or otherwise Christian-centric.
Theyāll host free meals for the whole community⦠but the people have to attend a church sermon before theyāre allowed to have food.
Theyāll host events and groups for kids⦠but all the education and activities are about Christianity.
Missionaries blatantly take advantage of scared and vulnerable communities, who are like that because of Christian colonialism, to forcefully convert them and kill off their religions and cultures.
they do this in their home countries too withĀ āsupportā for homeless people and others dealing with food insecurity.Ā
I just finished LOTR
Men of Rohan: The glories of war are only a means to an end. All I desire is the saftey of my people and peace for my country.
Eowyn: I want to murder orcs so badly it is making me physically ill.
Eowyn, while holding Faramirās hand and making eye contact with him: I am in love with a noble, strong, wise, but most of all kind man.
Faramir, nodding: Who wouldnt fall in love with Aragorn.
Also, this isnt like a fun headcannon this is damn near a quotation. Eowyn was literally holding the dudes hands and staring into his eyes professing her love and the dumbass thought she was talking about Aragorn. He responded along the lines ofĀ āBut Aragorn wont be back from the black gate for like a week, so in the meantime its nice to hang out and just look at how pretty you areā
I know its a meme but they really are the epitome of āCouple that shares one collective brain cellā
Glaladriel: Aragorn why are there orcs in lothlorien who have you brought me this time I swear to god if you keep dragging trouble in- *she turns and sees the four hobbits, dwarf, and baby elf*
Galadriel: Nevermind I love them have some presents.Ā
Galadriel holding Gimli by the armpits: Babie..
Gandalf: *Accidentally knocks over a glass of milk*
Gandalf: ā¦
Gandalf: Somehow I am certain this is Peregrin Tookās fault.
My gender is a feral beast, but y'know, a feral beast that wants cuddles.

Just as a warning, it is a little violent, some horses are killed during the battles, and there is a scene where Wentai cuts open his wrist. It is a very good movie, I just finished watching it and would recommend everyone watch it.
IF YOU ARE UNMARRIED, DON'T HAVE KIDS, AND HATE YOUR PARENTS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HAVE A FUCKING WILL
this has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood probate lawyer
Again:
1. The law doesn't care how long your parents and family have been out of your life
2. The law doesn't care about your long term friends or "found family"
If you don't have legal documents that say otherwise, your biological family calls all the shots.
This goes especially for LGBTQ+. Please do not get deadnamed in your obituary.
If you arenāt legally married (even if you are, to be safe), consider having:
1) a medical power of attorney. This allows you and your partner/spouse to make life saving or life ending decisions. Keep several copies in accessible places like your glove compartment, a lock box at your home. While love might have won in the courts, medical professionals only have to follow your wishes if they want - or unless you can beat them over the head with the legal documents and the threat of a lawsuit
2) a legal document stating that you, as the spouse/partner, have the right to claim your partnerās/spouseās body should they pass away. Frighteningly, even estranged families have more rights than a queer partner/spouse when it comes to this macabre task
In the unfortunate event that your heart doesn't stop when your brain does, have a living will to ensure your wishes are followed. Even if you and your family are on good terms, they are going to be grieving and may make decisions based on what they feel, not what you've expressed that you want.
Not going to lie, itās genuinely upsetting to think about the newĀ āfansā who are going to judge Legend of Korra, without knowing about all of the horrible things that Nickelodeon did to Bryke.
Two things I always remind fans of/tell new fans:
1) they had to FIGHT the network to make the next avatar a girl in this series
2) they could not overtly develop the Korrasami romance. They had to get permission just for that last scene with them holding hands and going into the spirit world and the strong implications the moment had. It really makes me upset when people credit Nickelodeon for āgiving is Korrasamiā. They didnāt want it.
What people always remind ME about:
1) the last two seasons didnāt even air on television, only online.
3) Nickelodeon originally only bought one season and lead everyone to believe it would be a one and done type deal. Partway through production of the first season (the latter half if Iām remembering correctly) Nickelodeon suddenly changed their minds and ordered three additional seasons so the writers had to scramble and change things last minute when a good chunk of season 1 was finished and/or had started airing.
This is why season 1 seems like its own thing, has a different tone, and speeds through the plot. Itās also why season 2ā²s beginning is particularly rough and it takes a while for the show to get back on its feet.
4) Partway through production of season 4, Nickelodeon slashed their budget by no small amount out of the blue. The reason why the recap episode exists and reuses previous footage while AtLA got the Ember Island Players episode was because that was the only way they could deal with the sudden lack of money without sacrificing their vision for the finale.
5) The finale was pulled from itās air block/location with less than a weekās notice and put on Nickelodeonās websiteās streaming option which sucked at the best of times and could not handle that many people trying to watch at the same time. If they were able to watch at all.
One of the creators also had to take to his block shortly after the finale aired to clarify that Korra and Asami were dating and were bi because they could only get away with the handholding scene and there were a ton of fans at the time saying that it was unclear and they were just very good friends. Yes, in 2014 people were still saying that anything short of tongues down throats or sex scenes meant that they were just gals being good pals.
Also it wasnāt just that Korra was a woman Nickelodeon had an issue with, it was that she was a woman of colour. A white female avatar they would have grumbled about but eventually came around to, but they fought the creators to make Korra anything other than a woman of colour and they hated that one of their most popular shows with the older demographic starred someone who was neither male nor white.
And for that they did everything in their power to fuck over production so that they could cancel the show and point to the numbers as a reason why they did it, not because theyāre racist, sexist, and homophobic.

Watson: āIāll be delighted to inform you that this is the very same roommate.ā
Yall sleeping on this Sam L. Jackson interview about trump lmfao.
Samuel L. Jackson is an international treasure.
In 1966, during the height of the civil rights movement, Jackson enrolled at the historically black Morehouse College in Atlanta, the alma mater of Martin Luther King Jr. In 1968, when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Kings body was brought to Atlanta to lie in state at Spelman College, the historically black womanās school adjacent to Morehouse. Jackson attended Kingās funeral as one of the ushers and then flew to Memphis to join an equal rights protest march that changed the way he thought. āI was angry about the assassination, but I wasnāt shocked by it. I knew that change was going to take something different ā not sit-ins, not peaceful coexistence,ā he stated in an interview with Parade about his reactions to Kingās death.
InĀ 1969, as mentioned before, he and a group of activist Morehouse students held the collegeās board of trustees hostage, demanding that changes be made in the curriculum of the school and stating that they wanted more blacks on the governing board of the institution. Morehouse eventually gave in and agreed to change but Jackson was expelled for his actions.
That summer he became connected withĀ people in theĀ Black Power movement including Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown and others.
āI was in that radical faction,ā Jackson toldĀ Parade. āWe were buying guns, getting ready for armed struggle. āAll of a sudden,ā he said proudly, āI felt I had a voice. I was somebody. I could make a difference. āBut then one day,ā he added quietly, āmy mom showed up and put me on a plane to L.A. She said, āDo not come back to Atlanta.ā The FBI had been to the house and told her that if I didnāt get out of Atlanta, there was a good possibility Iād be dead within a year. She freaked out.āā
Jackson stayed in LA working in social services for two years and then applied to Morehouse and returning in January of 1971 as a drama major. āI decided that theater would now be my politics. It could engage people and affect the way they think. It might even change some minds,ā he toldĀ Parade.
āYou should stick to acting and stay out of politicsā say some motherfucking fools
