Hello, internet!! I was off tumblr for awhile because I wanted to avoid Wicked For Good spoilers before I had seen it. But I'm back and I come bearing treats: chapter 18 of Less Than Perfect! Link to AO3

This is a BIG CHAPTER in both length and content, I put my whole heart into it. So I hope you enjoy!

“If you trusted me, you would stop lying and tell me the truth.” Frustration bubbled to the forefront, pulling a low, feral growl from Galinda that surprised them both. How could Fiyero not understand that this wasn’t about him? She had only been following the rules, keeping her most unattractive features hidden from public view, and he was acting personally offended by her adherence to protocol. “It’s not that simple!” Galinda cried. “It’s not about you. And I didn’t want to lie, but I had to. You were never supposed to find out about this!” She gestured at herself for emphasis. What a sorry sight she currently was, visibly crumbling and obviously not a perfect girl worthy of a prince.

Dancing with Galinda, being by her side and watching the way she effortlessly drew friends and strangers alike into her orbit, was exhilarating but overwhelming. Too much attention, too much energy—Elphaba was just as content to sit and observe from a distance as Galinda and Fiyero swept across the dance floor elegantly entwined. They made a handsome pair, so effortless together. Something about the easy way Galinda and Fiyero fit together made Elphaba’s chest ache. Why did it ache? Galinda was her best friend, and Fiyero was wonderful to her. She shouldn’t feel envy. And yet…

I think a very fascinating aspect of Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship is how they have always seen each other, looking past their facades (Glinda’s performative niceness, Elphaba’s tough act) even during their loathing phase.

This continues throughout their relationship, when they’re friends, enemies, and more. It doesn’t take them any effort to understand one another, it just comes naturally to them.

Their conflict is never due to them not understanding each other but because of their different ideals (popularity, submission, conforming vs good intentions, standing up for what’s right, rebellion). However, they still understand why the other chooses their path, which is why during defying gravity, they accept their decisions even if they don’t agree with it and still wish each other happiness.

They never have to change the way they see each other but the way they see the world.
