I’ve been going on for weeks about how insidiously AMC’s chosen to race-bend Armand. Here’s a character whose beauty, charm, and desirability are extolled by everyone in the narrative, even when he’s done pure madness. Yet, they cast a stunning Bengali man in Assad Zaman only to have him derided for his sexuality, perceived failures at masculinity, and human lifetime of sexual abuse & trafficking, all of which make him undesirable to the (mostly white) men who won’t claim him.

Then, I go see The Odyssey with another character—Helen of Troy—that’s known to have an appearance that moves people to stunned inaction. Their nature cannot offend such an obviously supernatural beauty. But in Nolan’s more ‘grounded’ version of this epic, for which he appropriately cast Lupita Nyong'o as Helen, she’s now disfigured and brutalised by at least one character who deemed it unthinkable in the source material.

Is this it? Is this progress? Just a bait & switch to more of the same? Instead of letting audiences see darker skin fully occupy desirable and cherished roles, they’d rather demote and strip the roles bare. Only to coincidentally rediscover the usual tropes and violence reserved for people with these actors’ identities. Therefore, destroying the (profitable) hope & excitement of the latter group, and satiating the cruelty of bigots who created undue controversy over their casting.

Rolin jones creating the critically and popularly acclaimed interview with the vampire and then being by all accounts personally directly responsible for the worst episode of television I've ever seen and then immediately stepping down as showrunner is like. Did his contract with the devil run out. Mephistopheles didn't want to renew for season 3 or what

The idea for episode 7 came from a "fever dream" and I know that was the devil coming to collect

You couldn't make this up. Rolin Jones 'hates writing about identity' and yet has was so desperate to adapt a book that's very introspective and all about identity. This actually explains a lot about this season fixating on the rockstar part and ignoring Lestat's backstory and most of the psychological and interpersonal dimension that make up the majority of the book. Rolin saying things like he didn't want to include much of the Nicki stuff because they already kind of hit those beats with Louis. All the character-focused scenes being presented as an exposition dump. It's all about plot mechanics and entertaintment for him. Rolin literally didn't care about the actual core of the story and was resentful for having to write about it at all

also another thing that keeps pissing me off is that they had a perfect blueprint for how to do crazy, desperate and unhinged armand. because it was in the book they were supposedly adapting. but they did that instead

with few exceptions we have only seen black characters graphically get brutalized. they had closeups of louis’s body and face after lestat tried to murder him showing the extent of what was done, we saw just how burned and disfigured he was after her suicide attempt, claudia’s death is one of the most graphic i’ve seen on any tv show, we got closeups of their ankles slashed and shots of louis being kicked in the head and claudia being shoved into a box of live rats by the coven members. the majority of louis’s scenes in episode 7 were of his decapitated head on a pike, forced to look at his body as it flailed, begging to die, forced to apologize in something so close to a saw trap that it was bordering on copyright infringement while being painted as cruel and deserving of the abuse and then branded by armand.

we didn’t see any shots of lestat’s head in the bowling bag. we saw him burn, but it was portrayed as comical. we did not see bruce as he died, we did not see lestat get torn up by the wolves, we did not watch nicki die. in the majority of the scenes where a white character is injured, the action is cut away, out of frame, out of focus, mostly implied.

the extent of what we saw of the brutality of black characters now feels almost fetishistic. at the end of episode 105, lestat is floating in the air looking dreamy and louis is beaten to a pulp on the ground; episode 207, lestat is put together in a suit with his hair done and louis and claudia have been severely beaten. like, after this season, the rest of the show just looks weird.
