“So, when these gentlemen say, ‘You are utopians, you anarchists are dreamers, your utopia would never work,’ we must reply, ‘Yes, it’s true, anarchism is a tension, not a realization, not a concrete attempt to bring about anarchy tomorrow morning.’ But we must also be able to say but you, distinguished democratic gentlemen in government that regulate our lives, that govern us through the opinions that you form daily in your newspapers, in the universities, schools, etc., what have you gentlemen accomplished? A world worth living in? Or a world of death, a world in which life is a flat affair, devoid of any quality, without any meaning to it? A world where one reaches a certain age, is about to get one’s pension, and asks oneself, ‘But what have I done with my life? What has been the sense of living all these years?’”
— The Anarchist Tension, Alfredo M. Bonanno
this is why it's best to advertise your treated shirts as fire *resistant* instead of fireproof. a big ol glob of molten weld draws a pretty clear line lol
at least for where I am in New England, this is one of the longest 'winter tails' I can recall for many years. I'm not complaining - this is how it used to be when I was a kid in the 90s - it's just a noticeably slow thaw. over the past decade, we usually go from over a foot of snow to practically summer in two weeks flat, and there's always a road getting washed out or an old bridge getting blocked as the river rose over it from the speed of the melt. it's a welcome lull in the increasingly extreme weather I've noticed within my not-so-old lifetime.
The AI bubble bursting will mean that every product currently propped up by the tech industry doing circular self-investments has to be supplanted by an alternative that actually makes more money than it costs to run, or disappear with no replacement.
That doesn't mean literally every application of machine learning or language models goes away forever, because machine learning and generative models existed before Silicon Valley decided they were the infinite money algorithm, and will still be around after they stop thinking that. "Generate ten videos of cat people working in the baby mines for free" or "have the chatbot generate a summary every time I google" are not sticking around.
Roughly ten years from now, we'll have completely different approaches to using machine learning-based software, based on the applications of these algorithms that actually make sense given the resources used. They'll likely look a lot like the applications of machine learning that already existed before OpenAI, because those were motivated by finding places where these models were useful first, then developing the models afterwards.
The smuggest asshole alive will act like Sam Altman was vindicated in the end, but he will not have built Computer God, he will have been the figurehead of one of the worst investment bubbles in US history.
i guess he'll never be a christmas adventurer

REPRESENTATION IS A TRAP
this is so fucking funny
i can't stop thinking about this. this kind of shit is not like milsim plane nerds with their own super-expensive desktop cockpit recreations. that kind of hardware makes sense to exist.
this does not. they're playing world of tanks which is like the "call of duty" of tank games (casual, players only slightly bad-smelling). it also doesn't have support for tank peripherals. no game does. no trainers do afaik. which means that (assuming this isn't just a video editing) all of that shit they are fucking with translates into mouse/keyboard inputs that the game understands. that's weird/hard and perplexing, uh, and considering that "tank peripherals" aren't a thing that exist i can only guess they built them theirselves
which is fucking hilarious because why are they so good. why does the fucking cannon breech have a little dry ice smoke effect when the breech opens like they just shot a shell. what. manual turret traverse crank?? did they build a fucking ready rack!! they're even using the correct phraseology which means one of these mofos read a PDF file
great news everyone
everyone can believe what they want - it's your free will and irreplaceable time, after all - but I will not personally accept any space for AI apologism wrt to anything remotely artistic. we're not cataloguing entire genomes, or coding dynamic security software, or calculating a planetary reentry path. those are legit reasons to utilize that kind of processing horsepower; any form of visual or literary art isn't. you do you, philistine, but do it outside my orbit.
“Marge everything is enslaved by fixed ideas. Have you ever sat down and read this thing? Technically the way we close a car door is a spook.”
SUNDAY FRIEND: "of course we denounce what has happened - the international community has issued official statements on the matter, after all - but now we must look to the economy. maintaining ze price stabilité is of utmost importance."
It is ideologically convenient for those who wish to maintain the status quo to assume that anyone proposing to radically transform society must be out of tune with ‘‘reality’’; in fact, such an assumption merely unconsciously hypostasizes whatever conditions happen to be prevailing at the time—mere historical contingency—into ‘‘reality’’ per se, and therefore into natural necessity. The ruling ideologies that prevail in any dominatory social order […] surreptitiously substitute a ‘‘must be’’ for every ‘‘is,’’ and turn every ‘‘must be’’ into an ‘‘ought to be.’’ It is precisely this ideological slide from description to prescription that anarchist critics from Proudhon to [Peter Lamborn] Wilson have always called attention to, and it is in terms of this opposition that they have encountered works of radical ugliness as manifestations of a conservative aesthetic.

I feel as though a lot of people saying the abduction of Maduro in a US military raid is an unprecedented attack on state sovereignty have forgotten about this (or for some younger people, not known it happened).
