ok ive been thinking about making this since last night bc i wanted to say that i actually dont think the vision includes cole disliking cullen either! but i do think the relationship should be a fraught one.

like, cole is capable of compassion for everyone, thus, when speaking to him, he should express compassion for cullen— he should acknowledge cullen's pain and his feelings of guilt and shame and self-loathing, and should defend him on that basis. but imo he should still not be able to be human in a room with him. because all of cullen's memories of pain and fear and trauma are, like, inextricably linked to memories of mages suffering, at his own hands and at the hands of others, and. well. cole exists as he is Because of mages' suffering right

like this is cole's trigger issue. he's taking the form of a young mage who starved to death because of templars' negligence and malice. he spent time among mages and decided that the Only kind thing he could do for them, within the confines of the circles, was kill them and end their suffering. cole is a spirit of compassion but also, like, in some way, cole is a spirit of mages' pain; mages' suffering at the hands of templars given physical form. & i think in light of this, he should be able to Express cullen's pain, explain it, defend cullen's remorse, but not be able to coexist with him in space without becoming agitated and strange and doing. spirit behaviours.

& conversely i think cullen should be... really afraid of him. from cullen's perspective, in this situation, cole is: a demon wearing a mage's face, let loose within the inquisition to unearth his traumas and secrets and reveal them to anybody who happens to be listening, & who becomes confused and violent and frightening whenever they share space. cole should be. kind of. a spectre of the carnage at kinloch hold to him... a point of conflict between him and the inquisitor, as well.

& like i think narratively this relationship could serve as a vehicle for. first of all really developing cole's perspective as more than a convenient mouthpiece for exposition about stuff the characters won't say to you themselves, and like... a way to give him his own Stuff — he becomes a voice for the mage-templar conflict, a character carrying serious and complicated baggage about it, and, as a spirit, part of the argument solas puts forth that the imagined becomes real in the fade. but also i think it provides a way to articulate with some specificity and depth. what cullen has suffered, what he has Done, the ways in which his victimhood and the harms he has caused are Connected. and actually interrogate what he's ashamed of, what he isn't, and the... how and why of it. and then accordingly the player can make choices about how to handle that and whether to push for growth and understanding in him or reinforce his previous beliefs. do you use the threat of cole the unstable spirit to keep cullen on the lyrium leash? do you take the opportunity to try to have a conversation about what the templar order does to mages even at its hypothetical best? i think having this relationship be a serious complicated one opens up some narrative possibilities in a fairly like. natural way. you understand

death is the ultimate metaphor for drastic change. it’s a general specific. whatever your problems are, it is very likely that dead people don’t have to deal with them. a real solution to your problems may demand a very narrow range of action that’s likely to be out of reach at this moment, but death is sold on every street corner, so it feels like a more realistic fantasy than happiness.

you don’t really want to die per se but it’s also not completely random chemicals swamping your brain for no reason. you want the pain to stop, you want to be somewhere else, you want to be someone else. it’s urgent. you don’t know how to do it. the end is not the end but a means that feels within your reach right now.

this is the wisdom of bell hooks: daily rituals of meaning and resistance and solidarity are part of slowly building a future where you can make the change you really need. and only alive people can do that. every step you take towards change and power is another step away from death.
