Project Hail Mary gives me hope that I don't have to write a story where the main character is having sex and falling in romantic love to be a good story that people want to relive again and again. Like maybe I just need a main character that's a little relatable to be given a task that seems impossible but we all get to figure it out together as we go.

One of the reasons people headcanon Grace as aromantic is the unfortunately realistic scene where they go "you don't have a family or a loved one" as if that's enough of a justification to send him on a suicide mission. As if not having a family makes Grace inherently less valuable and means he should be more willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

Grace wasn't sad and lonely, he was happy, he had a good life, he very much did not want to die. They have to do a looney tunes chase sequence and drug him because Grace was *very* unwilling to be the sacrificial lamb. Humanity's savior was dragged kicking and screaming into the role and called selfish for daring to be a coward, as if most of us wouldn't be.

And then he befriends Rocky, who never demands a sacrifice from him, who willingly prolongs his journey home so Grace can go back to his. Rocky has a mate back home and his species depends on his return, and still risks his life to save his squishy human friend. And Grace returns the favor.

And thus the power of friendship saves two planets.

Anyway, have an aroace themed Project Hail Mary cover. I tried to keep a good chunk of the OG cover design (because I actually really like it) and just added in some fun additions to it~

Maybe one day I’ll actually be able to learn some book binding and actually put this on the book 😆. Hopes and dreams.

I can’t get this art out of my head. Is there any chance of a dust jacket version? Or maybe I should just find some nebula pictures with sunset flag colors for the wings that tuck inside the book

I’ve seen a few people mention doing a dust jacket version for this. I’ll have to do some digging for dimensions to make it work but I’ll see what I can do. The current dimensions were based on the size of the original paperback.

The headcanon that Ryland Grace is aroace is so important to me. Because the respresentation of his relationship with Rocky being the most important relationship in his life is SO meaningful.

Like that’s just his buddy. His little guy. A friend, and that’s ENOUGH for him. It’s the most meaningful relationship he has and will have and he’s perfectly content with it

I like that the only two Ryland grace ships tumblr is at all interested in are 1) Grace/Simon (crossover ship between two entirely unrelated fandoms) and 2) nothing he’s aroace

I’ve only seen one person ship him with Stratt. Ive only seen one person ship him with rocky. He’s either aromantic or gay for a guy who is not real. That’s. Fantastic actually

Yknow, after seeing Project Hail Mary I was fully expecting this website to be all over shipping Grace and Rocky, so to instead find that everyone has agreed that Grace is an aroace icon and he and Rocky are platonic soulmates is a real fun change of pace that is still oh so very tumblr

On the flipside there's the group of fans who are shipping him with Simon from Iron Lung, called the ship BloodyMary, and had them adopt Laika the space dog and call them "The Patron Saints of One-Way Trips" which is so unbelievably tumblr you just have to smile
