My theory was rather biological bc I’m microbiologist, so I see biology everywhere yeah xd
So my theory was, that except for radioactive isotopes (and prob heavy metals), there were some spores (yeah, spores can survive really harsh conditions) of something like Streptomyces or slime mold bc of its mode of action—secretion of proteolytic and other „digestive” enzymes + it basically can form a large net of mycelium in the soil
And if for living organisms from the Earth radioactive isotopes and heavy metals are toxic bc of blocking the activity of different enzymes (for heavy metals) or damaging of cell components (for isotopes), the organism from the meteorite is okay with that
Funfact: there’s a bacterium which is resistant to radiation, it’s called Deinococcus radiodurans
So I guess, heavy metals + radioactive isotopes which were washed into the soil by the rain + forming of mycelium-like structures could have turned the area near the house into the wasteland for a very long time
And if it goes about the diseases of animals, they could have been caused by several factors: radiation/heavy metals poisoning itself, weakened immune system by this poisoning -> organism can be attacked by its own microbiota, mutation of non-pathogenic soil bacteria as an effect of radiation (so there’s a possibility that some of them may have become pathogenic)
And if it goes about shrinking, I guess, it’s because meteorites can also contain water (which is in solid state in space, obviously)—but here I’m not sure, I’m not an astronomist or something xd
