"Our discussion of learning disabilities is a mental health issue. Indeed, it is a public health issue. Youth who struggle with learning disabilities become adults with learning disabilities, who are over-represented in many marginalized populations, and more vulnerable to risk-taking behavior and mental health issues than those without. There are many indicators, too many indicators, of the pressing need for further implementation of cognitive-based training as a standard in education.
While calculating the true cost, medically and socially may be impossible, I know with certainty that this is a cost that is not only immense, but avoidable. During this Mental Health Week, I ask that learning disabilities be part of the discussion. We must create a world where children and youth will not feel they have to hide their learning disabilities. Most importantly, we need to be aware that by cognitively changing their learning potential, young people can leave their learning disabilities behind, and no longer have to endure the devastating effects on their mental health."

"“The Arrowsmith program, along with the other academic programming we offer, lets parents know there is hope” says Smookler, “and that there is something they can do to help their children succeed and go on to become confident, independent learners and achieve their goals.”

Thank you for your interest in the Arrowsmith Community.
Great interview with neuroscientist Max Cynader discussing how our brains work, and neuroplasticity on Fanny Kiefer's show.
Arrowsmith Program founder and Director Barbara Arrowsmith Young is mentioned around the 7:00 timestamp.
We recommend David Grand's new book Brainspotting: The revolutionary new therapy for rapid and effective change
As Norman Doidge, author of The Brain That Changes Itself says, "David Grand is one of the most important and effective psychological trauma therapists now practicing, and his development of Brainspotting is a very important leap forward in helping people resolve trauma. Brainspotting is a remarkable, sophisticated, flexible addition to the therapeutic toolkit of any psychotherapist."
Did you know that looking at cute animals can positively affect your state of mind and increase your productivity ? "If viewing cute things makes the viewer more attentive, the performance of a non-motor perceptual task would also be improved"
A lovely Letter To The Editor from a parent whose son's life was changed through the Arrowsmith Program. We're thankful to this family for their support! "My son is currently in his second year of the Arrowsmith program. He was struggling in the public school system to the extent he was refusing to go. He was suffering from extremely low self-esteem, severe depression and was very angry. He felt no one understood him. As indicated in a previous article, people diagnosed with a learning disability are at or above average intelligence. Almost always there's more than one hindrance to learning in the traditional school environment. In my son's case he was diagnosed with auditory processing, visual processing, dyslexia, executive functioning, severe short-term memory problems, etc. He was in the reading recovery in the public school system for four years and still could not read. It is not just learning this affects, but everyday life: reading signs in stores, movie theatres, restaurants, etc.
Four months in Arrowsmith and he was reading almost perfectly! I could not believe it. This year also his writing was readable. This was achieved through a cognitive activity called symbol recognition. His memory is better than anyone else's in our household!"
We're really excited to announce our first live Professional Webinar, happening May 8! http://www.arrowsmithschool.org/arrowsmithschool-toronto/infosessions-professionals.html Learn and ask questions about how the Arrowsmith Program works within schools and uses the principles of neuroplasticity to fundamentally strengthen the learning capacity of students who struggle with learning disabilities. Wednesday May 8th 1:00-2:30 pm or 7:00-8:30 pm Register now. Space is limited.
Congratulations to Barbara Arrowsmith Young, recipient of the 2012 Alumna of Honour Award
The Arrowsmith Program, Arrowsmith School Toronto and Arrowsmith School Peterborough would like to congratulate Barbara Arrowsmith Young, founder of the Arrowsmith Program, and author of The Woman Who Changed Her Brain, on being selected as the 2012 Alumna of Honour by the University of Guelph Alumni Association.
This award “recognizes alumni whose contributions to the community, science, education, business, industry and the arts are so significant that they bring honour to their alma mater and fellow alumni.”
Barbara completed her Undergraduate degree in Child Studies in 1974, and began her journey of exploring how children learn differently at the University of Guelph. This was a pivotal experience in shaping her life’s work.
She is honoured to have been chosen for this prestigious award by her alma mater.
The award will be presented to Barbara at the University of Guelph on Wednesday, March 27, 2013.
Howard Eaton, Director of Eaton Arrowsmith School appeared on Shaw TV's The Rush, where he discussed brain plasticity and the phenomenal changes he's seen in students with learning dysfunctions using the Arrowsmith Program created by Barbara Arrowsmith-Young.
SUMMERSIDE — The Learning Disabilities Association of P.E.I. is working to bring a unique program to the Island to help people with learning disabilities and learning difficulties.
The Arrowsmith Program has been implemented in schools and learning disability associations across North America, and was recently introduced to the Sydney, Australia, Catholic education system.
Neuroplasticity, the idea that people can change the shape of the brain, is at the core of the Arrowsmith Program. The program identifies and strengthens weaker brain areas and the cognitive deficits behind learning disabilities.
The Arrowsmith Program is not based on teaching students to work around their barriers, but rather in strengthening the areas of weakness that uphold these barriers, breaking them down and increasing the capacity of students to reach their potential and learn more effectively.
Joanne McCabe, interim director for the LDAPEI, said her group is hoping to implement the program.
“For implementation we’re seeking students, that’s why we’re starting to promote it,” she said. “We have a speaker coming to give basic information about the program, what it does, who it’s for, and a bit about all of the experiences people have had with it, the research base and that kind of thing. The research is very powerful on it. The Arrowsmith website is full of information.”
The LDAPEI will host Jessica Poulin, managing coordinator from the Arrowsmith Program, on Wednesday, March 27, at 7 p.m. at Holland College in Charlottetown. .... (More here)
