it's so fucking frustrating to be in college and know everyone uses chatgpt and to be tempted by it constantly while also knowing intellectually that it doesn't work and it's a bad idea. like, i hang out in the library a lot, and i see people using chatgpt on assignments almost every day. and i know it isn't a good way to learn, because it's not really "artificial intelligence" so much as it is an auto text generator. and it gives you wrong information or badly worded sentences all the time. but every week i stare down assignments i don't want to do and i think man. if only i could type this prompt into a text generator and have it done in 10 minutes flat. and i know it wouldn't work. it wouldn't synthesize information from the text the way professors want, it wouldn't know how to answer questions, it just spits out vaguely related words for a couple paragraphs. but knowing my classmates get their work done in 10 minutes flat with it while i fight every ounce of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in my body is infuriating.

i think one thing that's been really helpful in keeping myself from using it is thinking about Why i have to do the specific assignments i have. like what is the actual goal. like some assignments the goal isn't "share a story about parenting styles in ur personal life" so much as it is "show you understand the concept of parenting styles thru a story". or it's not "how do hormones impact teenagers' decision making abilities" it's "can you understand, reword, synthesize, and explain the information in the text and videos to explain how hormones impact teenagers' decision making abilities". and looking at it as "this assignment is asking me to read some words and then understand and explain them, which is a skill i want to have" rather than "i have to answer these stupid questions that seem really obvious because all my professors want me to die forever" has helped. especially in a world where everyone uses chatgpt i want to know how to read with my own brain

Good for you for resisting the call. I remember the temptation to refer to translations when I was a classics major in the 90s. Each time I gave in seemed harmless, but robbed me of the chance to work it out for myself, the skill I trying to learn.

You are training yourself to research topics and use critical thinking.

These skills were already in short supply — at least in the US — before chatGPT, due to public school funding being tied to students spitting out correct answers on standardized tests.  That raised a generation prone to binary thinking (correct/incorrect), less equipped to grapple with complex issues.

The ChatGPT generation is going to have an even harder time figuring things out for themselves, if they don't practice.

You're learning how to judge what's a good source of information. You're learning the difference between evidence and opinion. You're learning methods and mental approaches that can be applied to other problems.

You're going to be better-prepared than your peers to deal with the misinformation and plausible-sounding BS we all face now that people, corporations and politicians are using tools like chatGPT to share news and information, sell us things, or make claims about history, truth, and other people.

Another thing to take advantage of is office hours. If you don’t understand the assignment, if you want to talk it through first to make sure you’re on the right track. Most professors have no one show up to office hours & it’s so useful. & it helps them know you’re serious & want to learn. it may help you if you need an extension later.

& don’t forget about research librarians! I didn’t learn my school had them until my last year!! Omg it would have made my life so easier.

You literally can go to your library, schedule a meeting with a librarian give them a few search key words or your thesis statement & they will give you 5-10 relevant primary & secondary sources that they’ve found.

Remember the 6 year old girl who was surrounded by Israeli tanks and the red crescent couldn't reach her? Her name is Hind Hamadeh. Here you can hear the phone call her 15 year old sister, Layan Hamadeh, made with the medics. She was killed exactly a moment later including all people in the car, except for 6 year old Hind who was stuck in the car with the dead bodies of her family, Israeli tanks and IDF surrounding her, shooting, preventing anybody to reach her.

That was last night (29.1.24). Today, still nothing. The fate of Hind remains unknown.

palestine red crescent ambulance team went to rescue her yesterday evening, but they have not returned as of now. We lost contact with them about 18 hours ago, and we still remain unaware of their fate and whether they succeeded in evacuating her or not.

Please, share Hind's story as much as you can on any platform. We need to know what happened to her. Put yourself in her place, how terrified she must be. Don't scroll past this.

Begging people to stop reblogging this AI trash from “The Phantom Painter” on Instagram (instagram.com/phantom.painting). I’ve been seeing it on my dash more and more often from people who are otherwise anti-AI and either can’t tell it’s AI or don’t care because it looks cool.

This is the kind of shit that is VERY CLEARLY trained on the works of existing talented artists’ with distinct styles and this asshole is selling prints and making a profit off of stealing other people’s hard work.

Don’t give people like this money or attention and they will go away.

Please, if you’re going to buy art prints, buy them from an actual artist.

@thegnat That’s the problem, it’s getting really hard to tell what’s AI and what isn’t. This phantom painter person at least says on each post on Instagram that it was created with AI, but when people re-post it on tumblr, it isn’t specified, and people end up reblogging it.

It’s not reasonable to think everyone should be vetting every single art they reblog to make sure it isn’t AI, which is why I made this post to let people know this artist specifically is AI, and I see it reblogged a ton.

That last one is for the people saying “you can always tell by the hands.” You cannot. The whole point is that it’s getting better and better at it. That’s what it does.

As an art curator on tumblr I now have to spend a considerable amount of time trying to decipher whether or not the art I want to share is AI or not and I still sometimes get it wrong.

That’s another reason why crediting the artist preferably with a link to their website/instagram is so important so you can find out if it’s a legitimate artist or illustrator and not just someone typing in a few commands and plagiarizing people’s work.

Also heads up- I’ve also seen so many AI interiors on here. With tons of notes- some have like 100k notes- they can be hard to catch unless you have an eye for how fabric moves, how shadows fall, how architecture works. Or if you notice things like plants/objects sitting on walls instead of surfaces.

A big red flag is usually their people posting them have their replies disabled, so the only way you can share that it’s AI is by reblogging it & putting it in the tags
