We have Lucio Fontana to thank for the Instagram trend of immersive art experiences. In 1946, Fontana founded Spatialism, a manifesto where art embraces science and technology. He experimented with three-dimensionality, which makes sense since he trained as a sculptor. In fact, Fontana hadn’t touched a canvas before the age of 51! He’s best known for his slashed painted canvases, an innovation that turns a flat painting into a three-dimensional object, creating real depth instead of perceived depth. In 1961, inspired by the shiny skyscrapers of New York City, Lucio Fontana started using metals like copper, brass and aluminum. Always interested in how his art interacts with the space around it, the reflective qualities of the metal created works that envelope their environments creating an interactive experience for the viewer.
