i think the reason so many people assume/headcanon characters who are depicted as men and have some clear form of being uncomfortable with their gender as transmasc, rather than transfem, is because other transmasculine people see relating too, or even being around femininity as weakness or "faking" being trans. The assumption trans men make is, that if they relate to a character that isn't their gender, they are not their gender. It's so OBVIOUSLY based in the idea "girls like girl things, boys like boy things"
Like, you are allowed to relate to a female character. You are allowed to relate to a character who is not based off specifically your experience. The idea that any character who is uncomfortable with their gender is transmasc is not only media illiterate, but also unhealthy projection and male-centered.
