The Thankful Poor, 1894
"The Thankful Poor is slowly becoming a familiar image. After lingering in a school closet for 75 years, it was rediscovered and auctioned at Sotheby's in 1981. Bill and Camille Cosby purchased it for $250,000, at the time the most ever spent for a painting by an African-American artist."

MidSommar Dance by Anders Zorn
Midsommardans 1897, captures the spirit of this wonderful celebration! Anders Zorn (1860 -1920) was a Swedish artist that traveled extensively throughout Europe and the US. And because of traveling his paintings portray such incredible fluidity which is obvious, in this particular painting, through the form of dance.

But this movement is also visible in Zorn's execution of the women's skirts and scarves, the grass, and the maypole and Swedish flag that blow in the background.

What #isamuseum? He’s asked the questions. You’ve (potentially) answered them. Now engage with artist Sam Durant in a Google Art Talk on air.
It aired on June 11 at 11:00 AM, but the full talk was recorded and is viewable here.
(For more direct dialogue with Sam this week, follow Getty Voices on Twitter and Facebook where Sam will continue the conversation)
