Shelter from the Rain Vol. 11 Erwin Smith
Just as Erwin Smith got out of his one-man carriage after his meeting with his supporters, rain began to fall from the grey skies. The Survey Corps barracks were right ahead of him, but the rain grew intense in no time at all. He instinctively hid under the closest roof.
"âŚThat was a failure."
The Commander's bolo tie swung as he wiped the water off of his drenched chest. When he did this, a vision of the past crossed the back of his mind, mixed with the sound of the rain.
"Commander⌠Please, Commander, help meâŚ"
A self-deprecating smirk came to the edge of Erwin's mouth as he looked at the large drops of water rolling off the roof and splashing against the ground.
So even getting drenched all alone like this is what I deserveâŚ
*******
Rain is not a great thing.
Plans go haywire when it rains during an expedition. While some Titans don't move as efficiently, perhaps because there's less sunlight, others are fine, making it difficult to predict what might happen. In the past, Erwin had put his emotions aside and sacrificed Corpsmen in order to get past such Titans.
âŚI wonder how many men and women I've fed to them.
The wind, chilled with rain, shook his blond hair.
It was all to accomplish our goals⌠That's how I've rationalized it.
******
"Commander⌠I believe in you⌠CommanderâŚ"
Erwin couldn't stop hearing the voice. Could it have been because of the strong rain? The voice belonged to a nondescript soldier who had died in front of his eyes on a day like this one.
YouâŚbelieve in me?
âŚBut the soldier wasn't unknown to Erwin. He knew the soldier's name, his story, everything.
Erwin truly believed in every single member of the Corps. He even thought of them as family. And yetâŚ
I don't thinkâŚthat I deserve their heartfelt trust. Because it's their trust in me that I've used to make them throw away their livesâŚ
This line of thought meant that Erwin would always be isolated and alone for as long as he led the Survey Corps. He pushed these feelings of desolation back into his heart and shiok his head.
But that's justâŚanother part of my fate.
******
"Heeey, Erwin!"
The wild shout brought Erwin back to his senses.
"So that's where you were!"
When he faced the voice, he noticed a number of familiar shapes running toward him through the weakening rain.
"We were looking for you!"
"We thought this rain might've held you upâŚ"
Hange waved at him so hard it seemed they might shake off their rain gear. Next to Hange was Levi, clicking his tongue.
"It's time for the officers' meeting," Mike said briefly with a snort. Erwin voiced his surprise as he looked at the three.
"You came out here just to look for me? You could've left it to your troopsâŚ"
"I knew you'd probably be acting all sentimental since it's this damp out. You wanted me to let some drop-outs see your pathetic face looking like that?"
"What he means is that we came here because we were worried about you, Erwin!"
Erwin was casually passed some rain gear, and he felt something as he took it--something pure and strong--true bonds.
"Sorry⌠That's very helpful if you."
He put on the rain gear and began heading to the barracks with the other three.
You really didâŚhelp me out.
The day may come, he thought, when he would have to throw away even these bonds. But they would surely trust Erwin in their final moments.
As the now-gentle rain dripped down on Erwin, he showed a genuine smile.

The Ultimate EruHan Meta
Oh boy. Â
So, I feel that first, I must preface this long-ass meta:
First, bless your heart if you read this.
Second, this is just for funsies. Yeah, for some reason, I find this kind of shit enthralling! Â I have no idea why. Â Regardless, this is not meant to shit on EruRi shippers, LeviHan shippers, or anyone in-between. Â This is simply something Iâve been wanting to do. Â Erwin and Hanji have a very underrated relationship, and Iâve wanted to highlight it for a long time. Years.
I also use âsheâ pronouns in this meta, but I think Hanji can have whatever pronouns. Â Isayama has said it doesnât matter to the story, so run wild.
This ship is incredibly important to me, and I hope to share my feelings with the fandom in a light besides incessant fangirling and stupid art.
OK. Â Letâs do it.
I have read through the series thus far (right now, itâs late April of 2019) completely in Japanese, and Iâve done my best to read through English translations of each chapter as well. Â Why Japanese? Â Well, Iâm an elitist.
Just kidding.
Thereâs actually a very specific reason that I prefer the Japanese to the English, and it has to do with the linguistic structure of the languages. Â In English, there are certain things that we cannot change in our writing to emphasize somethingâthe word âI,â for instance, is always âI,â and âyouâ is always âyou.â Â Right now, as I type this, I realize how limited the written English language is. Â I can only show you emphasis by bolding or italicizing the words, and even then, there are things left up to interpretation. Â
Japanese is quite a bit different, and though there is plenty of ambiguity used in this language (trust me, Iâve done studies lol), there are also parts that are more specific than in English. Â There are, for example, numerous ways to say âI,â âyou,â and other pronouns depending on the speaker, the listener, and other circumstances. Â
Itâs because of this that I prefer Japanese dubs and prints of anime and manga, respectively.
The last time I went to Japan, I came home with the first 14 volumes of Attack on Titan in Japanese, and this was the shit that dragged me into EruHan.
As is the case with most Americans, I assume, I saw the anime before I read the manga, but it was not until I read the manga that I started to ship Erwin and Hanji. Â Why?
Iâll explain the details later, but one of the biggest reasons is that the bulk of their interactions occur in what will be season two and beyond.
However, they do have really important interactions in season one, aka chapters 1 through 33 of the manga. Â Those moments serve as a great base for what to eventually expect in the latter chapters, when all of the heartbreaking shit happens. câ:
We never know for sure how Erwin and Hanji met, but we know that at some point, Erwin came to trust Hanji enough to consider her to be a competent Squad Leader, and eventually considered her as one of his right-hand men, along with Mike, and after a few years, Levi, too. Â Hanjiâs squad has a specific focus: Â to study Titans as closely as possible. Â It seems like a pretty dangerous job, but Hanji is a dangerous person in general. Â
Erwin is generally known as a strategist both in canon and in the fandom, but for a strategist to do their job, they have to have facts to base their plans on. Â As we learn later, Hanji is the source of those facts.
One of the most glanced-over scenes in the entire first season is when Erwin and Hanji are leading the Corps back to the wall after failing to secure Annie in her Titan form. Â Hanji questions Erwinâs decision to send Levi off only after making him refill on gas and blades; Erwin reveals that his plan was based on Hanjiâs information in the first place. Â
In other words, Hanji is someone that Erwin trusts implicitly. Â
But, we see the same thing with Hanji toward Erwin when they corner Annie in Stohess.
If you recall, Erwin and Levi are with Nile and the other Police soldiers during the rampageâErwin left Hanji to call the shots. Â Again, proof of trust in her abilities as a leader. Â
However, I find it hard to believe that Hanji would have followed Erwinâs plan if it had been anyone else besides Erwin that proposed it. Â Why?
Think of how much destruction the fight in Stohess caused. Â Itâs almost inexcusable, considering that in the end, Annie seals herself up and is useless as a test subject to Hanji and her squad. Â Hanjiâs first job is actually not a soldier, but a scientist; however, she trusted Erwin enough to not only agree to his plan to stop Annie at all costs, but also enough to be the one to carry out the dirty work. Â
Additionally, Hanji questions EVERYTHING. Â As a scientist, itâs only second nature. Â Iâve admittedly seen a lot of people shitting on Hanji for questioning Erwin from time to time, but NEVER should it be interpreted as insubordination or disrespect. Â Rather, Hanji is trying to acquire more information from Erwin to gain knowledge of as many perspectives as possible. Â And, by questioning Erwin, Hanji serves as a double-check system. Â Levi tends to follow Erwin blindly, whereas Hanji will question him almost as a testâas if to ask, âYou sure? You thought it through? Â OK, then letâs go.â
When thinking of all of this in anime context, thereâs one more thing Iâd like to point out:
The first OVA, Ilseâs Notebook.
In this particular OVA, most of the focus is on Hanji (thank god), and it expands upon what is briefly shown in the manga when Hanji, Levi, and his squad find the journal lying around. Â The OVA starts with Hanji basically drooling over the idea of capturing a Titanâand no, itâs not just because sheâs obsessed with the Titans themselves, but because sheâs obsessed with answering the many unanswered questions in their world, of which, the Titans are often the subject. Â However, when she confronts Erwin with the idea of capturing one, he turns her downâaccording to the dialogue, this isnât the first time they have this discussion, either.
But, perhaps you noticed Hanjiâs argument to Erwin? Â When he mentions the lives theyâve lost in the Corps?
âWithout making any sacrifices, we canât gain anything!â
Doesnât that sound familiar? Â
âSomeone who canât throw something away canât change anything!â Â
Armin said something similarâdo you remember whose ideals he based his quote on?
Erwinâs.
But, maybe, also Hanjiâs?
It is entirely possible that Hanji and Erwin have had the same thinking from the start, or that one of them influenced the other. Â
We donât really know for sure, since weâve yet to receive Hanjiâs backstory (Will it even happen? Â Sigh), but regardless, they think similarly. Â OK. Â Thatâs a thing.
As I mentioned previously, the bulk of their very important and often overlooked interactions are from season two (i.e. the Clash of the Titans arc) and onward in the manga/anime, up untilâŚthat thing called the serum bowl that none of us like to talk about.
If you recall, at the tail end of season one, Erwin was briefly arrested by the Military Police, then released. Â Once again, youâll notice that Hanji is the one calling the shots, along with Mike. Â Erwin has effectively split them up (presumably Erwin, Iâm actually not sure if itâs confirmed that he was the one to send Mikeâs squad to watch the 104th?), with Mike doing the physical work, and Hanji being left to the strategic end of thingsâto a point. Â I mean, itâs not as if Erwin is completely out of commission at that point (unlike Levi lmao). Instead, heâs working on his âbigâ projectâto overthrow the government and get those traitors out of hereâfrom more of a behind-the-scenes perspective. Â So he surely knew that things would get crazy on Hanji and co.âs end, yet he trusted her to follow through and lead the Corps while he worked separately for a while. Â
He doesnât think to check in on her, either, until the report about Wall Rose and the traitors finds him.  Iâm sure he didnât quite predict all that, especially because Reiner himself was flying by the seat of his pants lmao.  He hears that Hanji and company suffered injuries, and that Eren has been taken away, along with Ymir, so obviously, being the Commander and all that jazz, he goes to check in on the Corps soldiers atop the wall.  Until he arrives, Hanji does not moveâitâs only when she hears Erwinâs arrival that she moves, and itâs to talk strategy. Â
This admittedly brings up something else I want to talk about with them: both Erwin and Hanji are so goddamn willing to put everything and everyone else first besides their own well being. Â
I know a lot of EruHan writers play with this trope, but we didnât even have to add it in. Â Itâs there. Â All the time. Â
I think Erwin is especially obvious, considering how far he was willing to go to reach his goals, and his dream. Â However, Hanji is the same way when it comes to obtaining knowledge. Â And, both of them want to win. Â They are fighting to win. Â In season three, Erwin refers to himself as a gamblerâthe same is definitely true for Hanji, if not even more so.
So, Hanji gets her ass in gear long enough to tell Erwin what she can, and once again, using the information Hanji gave him, and not straying from it once, Erwin formulates a plan, and the Corps sets off.
Erwin did not stray from her information, used it to fuel the plan, and lost his arm in the process.
Flash-forward to Erwin in the hospital. Â Beardwin. Â
Wait, no omg.
Go back to when they brought him back to the hospital.
We donât see that, right? Â No, we donât.
But you know who else wouldâve been in the hospital receiving treatment for burns and possible concussion, etc.?
Hanji.
Hanji probably saw the direct results of her instructions to Erwin.
Now flash-forward to Beardwin.
Remember, back about forty years ago when you first started reading this meta? Remember what I mentioned how the Japanese language has different types of pronouns? Â It also has different kinds of politeness. Â Â
In the Japanese version of the scene where Beardwin does the creepy-ass smile, Hanji enters the room speaking pretty casually, like âhey whatâs up Erwinâoh shit Pyxis is here tooâ might as well have been the actual translation. Â Her speech goes from casual to formal the second she sees Pyxis. Of course, up to this point, Hanji had always used casual speech with Erwin, but the stark contrast to how she speaks to Pyxis, who is a pretty easy-going guy around the Corps veterans, just drives home the fact that they are familiar with one another.Â
In addition, we once again see Hanji give Erwin information, and boy howdy. Â Does he take it and run with it.
So begins the Uprising arc.
This is the arc that just pushed me face-first into EruHan, to be perfectly honest.
This is also the arc where the language usage is the most important.
At this point, the three veterans (Erwin, Levi, and Hanji) are split up for a little while. Â Levi and Hanji are sent to watch over the 104th while Erwin does his thing (again). Â However, Hanji has a little âside projectââshe is still keeping watch over Pastor Nick, until the Central Police murder him. Â She and Levi torture them, and thatâs a thing.
Due to the heavy focus on Historia and Eren, things are kind of quiet for the vets for a while, until Eren remembers some information from a dream, and yet again, Hanji brings that information to Erwin for him to put to good use.
This is one of the most important scenes in the arc, and for this ship.
First, note how calmly Erwin receives the flustered Hanji. Â He offers her food and water without question and immediately listens. (An aside: Â Erwin is probably one of the most patient characters in the series.) Â After explaining everything, Hanji then asks Erwin, âWhat should we do?â (Another aside: Â Donât forget how much these vets trust Erwin. Â Ever.)
Erwinâs at least one step ahead of everyone at all times, of course, so he has an answer, but part of that answer is pretty startling: Erwin names Hanji as the next Commander of the Survey Corps. Â He then promptly leaves, with Hanji staring after him (be still my heart) and is soon arrested once again.
This is a scene that I canât help but dissect, simply because thereâs just so much there.
Iâm also going to be bitter for the rest of my life that the anime strayed so much from the manga in this arc generally, but thatâs not the focus right now.
So, okay, remember the pronouns example I gave earlier?
Hanji uses âwatashi,â Levi uses âore,â Armin uses âboku,â etc. Â Most of the characters are very consistent with pronoun usage, and most of them default to either âwatashi,â simply because they are in the military, methinks. Â
Erwin, however (and unsurprisingly), is one of the characters who changes his pronoun usage. Â In fact, he is the one who changes it the most that Iâve seen so far in the series. Â He switches frequently between just two, âoreâ and âwatashi,â but what does this mean, exactly? Â What is there to gain from knowing the details behind his pronoun usage?
We see Erwin using âwatashiâ most frequently in two situations: he uses it in formal situations as the âCommanderâ towards people like Zackley, Pyxis, etc., and he uses it when speaking with a âsofterâ demeanor, such as early interactions with Eren. Â
Erwin uses âoreâ as a Commander mightâwith authority. Â It also seems to be his go-to generallyâin other words, if he did not have any social obligations to worry about, no public faces to protect, he would use âore.â
So, toward Levi, Erwin uses âoreâ pretty much exclusively. Â After all, though he respects Levi, he has no reason to be gentle or keep faceâin other words, no reason to use âwatashi.â
However, toward Hanji, Erwin almost always uses âwatashi.â (I should also note, he uses âomaeâ with âoreâ and âkimiâ with âwatashiâ accordingly.) Â The speech is more familiar, gentler almost. Â I wouldnât have given it much thought if it werenât for the one time he does use âoreâ toward Hanji.
That time happens to be when he names her the next Commander of the Survey Corps.
So, why the change?
If you recall, that scene takes place with them talking one on one about the note that Eren has left for Hanji to read regarding his memories of a conversation between Ymir and Bertholdt. Â Erwin eventually has summonsâones that he is sure will lead to his arrest, and he then names Hanji his successor. Â
To me, after seeing all of their interactions, I think that Erwin definitely shows some favoritism toward Hanji and holds a soft spot for her. Â After all, if you think back to the OVA, Hanji was the one to really prove herself and stand toe to toe with him. Â I think he admires such stubbornness, for reasons we can only speculate now. Â
When I think about how he previously had spoken to Hanji, it was always soâŚintimate?  Like, âI value this person and their opinions.  We are close.â  Using âoreâ breaks that down and instead builds a wall between them.  Itâs like he was saying, âIâm serious.  This isnât a joke.  You have to listen to me this time.â
Itâs worth noting that Iâve spoken to a few other Japanese fans about this part, both EruHan shippers and not, and everyone seems to agree that it seems like he did it for the sake of seeming authoritative, to make sure that this time, Hanji would listen without questioning him.
Of course, after the fact, Hanji questions it.
And I think that just drives my point home.
If you think back, or rather, forward in the manga, we see Hanji get handed a lot of shitâfrom Eren, the general populace, supposed allies. Â After one particular event, where Eren grabs Hanji and treats her like a piece of trash rather than his own Commander, Hanji escapes with humor, but behind closed doors, she feels frustrated and lost. Â
âErwin, this was your one mistake⌠ Why did you make me the CommanderâŚ?â
Erwin did not want Hanji to double-check him.  He did not want her to question him like she normally did.  He just wanted her to listen to him and take the order, so she did.  So itâs even more natural for her to doubt it now.  She didnât get that chance in the first placeâErwin took it away from her, and she let him, because she trusted him explicitly. Â
We hear about it constantly with Erwin and Levi, but donât forget:
Erwin and Hanjiâs relationship is also built on trust.
So, letâs go back to after the political arcâthey decide to go back to Shiganshina, and we have what has come to be known as the serum bowl. Â Yay! Â Sounds fun, right?
NO. Â FUCK THE SERUM BOWL.
But itâs important to dissect for the sake of this fucking essay. Â
Iâm gonna skip straight to the good stuffâit comes down to a choice between saving Armin or Erwin. Â Levi is pretty much set on giving it to Arminâuntil a soldier brings Erwinâs body back, and heâs clinging to life. Â Eren and Mikasa get hysterical, they fight, and it looks like Mikasa is gonna straight up become THE Ackermann, until someone interrupts them. Â
Itâs Hanji, and sheâs injured and all alone. Â At this point, sheâs lost Moblit and part of her vision, and now she could lose Erwin, too. Â This person she trusts and respects probably more than anyone in the world might die. Â I think it affected her on more than just a personal level too, obviouslyâthe Commander she entrusted her life and well-being to is on the brink of death, and she is supposed to somehow take his place. Â
Hanji obviously takes Leviâs side, insisting that Erwin should  be the one who gets the serum and a second lease on life.  She pulls Mikasa away, holding her closely, and tells her that she understands what sheâs feeling, what itâs like to lose someone you care about. Â
But, âErwin is the hope of humanity.â
Those are Hanjiâs words. Â Theyâre heavy. Â So fucking heavy. Â
If you questioned the respect and trust and love in their relationship (even just platonically) before, at that point, you really canât anymore, unless you decide to be in complete denial.
However, if youâre caught up with the manga, you know how it goesâErwin pulls a last minute âstunt,â then retires (cough) as Armin is given the serum and transforms into a Titan. Â Levi chooses Armin in order to let Erwin die as a human and not as a monster, and tries to talk himself through the choice out loud. Â
Hanji, however, has her eyes only on Erwin, and she is with him until his last moments ofâŚpre-retirementâŚ
Okay, but hereâs a thing I really want to point out.
Flocke, the dumb bastard who brought Erwinâs life back (heâs not dumb for doing that, btw), is the one who brings up the notion that it should be Erwin who receives the serum, because only Erwin had the capability of becoming a monster who could save them. Â That thought scared Levi, who held and continues to hold Erwin in very high esteem, and is what essentially pressed him into giving Armin the serum instead. Â
Do you think that thought scared Hanji?
Though we never hear one way or the other, I really donât think so.
When has Hanji ever feared the Titans? Â
No, itâs not even just thatâHanji saw the Titans as equals. Â She saw them as just a different kind of human, really. Â
Think back to Sawney and Bean, wayyyyy way back. Â Think about how she recognized their personalities, respected them, and loved them as the way that they were. Â And she had no idea what the truth behind them was. Â She had no idea at that time that they were humans. Â
Think about how she treated Eren as a Titan shifter (before he started being âŚwhatever he is now).  She respected him, was kind to him, and she didnât even know him.
I think itâs safe to say that  her relationship with Erwin would not have really changed.  She would have probably respected him even more than before.
âŚThereâs honestly so much more I could say about the ship on micro-levels, but I wanted to hit these big points because not only are many of them lost in translation, but they are highly underappreciated.  I get tired of seeing them left out of the main fandom, when itâs such a delightful, wholesome ship that has plenty to work with in both canon and AUs.
But, if youâre interested in hearing the smaller things, hmu.  I think about this ship all the damn time.  Everyone should have some level of appreciation for it. Â
âCat
Not looking at it from a ship pointing view but the fact how much of a close bond Erwin and Hanji had. How it is not only Levi/Erwin since certain people always think Hanji is air. Hanji is important for Erwin same was Mike and Levi too. Same way how Levi cares btw for Hanji too and does not hate her.
Chapter 132 Levi/Hange Analysis
Summary: An attempt to explain the sentence in chapter 132
Levi: I see your one sided love with Titans still goes unrequited, four-eyes.
Hange: âŚWeâll be getting along soon enough.ăďźâŚăăăŤäť˛čŻăăŞăăďź
Disclaimer: this is just interpretation and not meant to be taken as official proof of romance between Levi and Hange in Attack on Titan. This is theory and nothing else. Iâve read multiple tweets and essays to compile my own thoughts.
I personally do not have any qualms with other ships, and this essay doesnât discredit other Hange or Levi CPâs. Also, sorry but this essay has no pictures.Â
Lesson_____
A quick Japanese lesson (and language comprehension); I will try to make it painless. I make no assumption on the readerâs Japanese level/English grammar understanding and will be talking about it as is.
When 㯠is combined with another particle, it puts emphasis in a way such as English has intonation. Since Japanese does not stress tone (like how one says the words sarcastically/meaningfully/sadly/cheekily) it uses particles to do this job.
So, when Levi says, âç¸ĺ¤ăăă塨人ă¨ăŻçćăăŽăžăžă ăŁăăŞăŻă˝ăĄăŹăâ
It means literally, âAs always, still an unrequited love with Titans, four-eyes.â
Naturally, âYour love for Titans is one-sided, as usual, four-eyes.â
In Japanese, using ăŤăŻ or ă¨ăŻ creates a third, invisible option that is outside of the realm of the sentence.
When you use ㍠or 㨠or even 㯠by itself, it creates a one dimensional statement. When used with other particles combined with 㯠it creates another, outside dimension to the sentence. A third suggestion or comparison. 㯠can be used as a comparative or stress particle as well as a topic marker.
quick example.
I didnât go to the library with him. ->彟ă¨ĺłć¸é¤¨ăŤčĄăăŞăăŁă.ďź Forward statement. It is as it is. ďź
I didnât go to the library with him. ->彟ă¨ăŻĺłć¸é¤¨ăŤčĄăăŞăăŁă ďźImplying I went there with someone else, but not him. ďź
Just like youâd expect, English speakers understand the implications of stressing âhim.â Just as Japanese speakers understand the implications of ă¨ăŻ etc. If we stressed library(ĺłć¸é¤¨ăŤăŻďźinstead of âboyâ (彟ă¨ăŻďźthen itâs implication is that we didnât go to the library with him, but maybe somewhere else. I hope this is clear.Â
____
Okay, on with the analyses. Just a note again, but Iâve naturalized any Japanese so that itâs not literal, but the meaning is the same so itâs easier to comprehend for native English speakers. Iâve changed âIâ to âweâ considering I formatted to fit essays.
From ăšăăŞăăźăăăâs essay
Like others have said, Leviâs words feel like his true confession. Whether itâs romantic or not, itâs up in the air, but while making small talk and commenting about his long time comrade in arms, it seems like this comment is loaded with unlabeled feelings, like âYou gross me out, but I feel something special for you and I get you.â
It feels natural to say âYou still have unrequited love for Titans.â right after the banter of Hange and Pieckâs exchange. {note: 塨人ăŤçćăăŽăžăžă 㪠is using ㍠here, not ă¨ăŻ, so it feels natural to say ăŤďź
So why did he use âă¨ăŻâ and not âăŤâďź
If thereâs official announcement that sayâs thereâs no meaning to it, or that itâll be corrected in the official volume, then this sentence will be meaningless. But if itâs intentional or even unconscious decision, we get the impression that he is recalling a third person (âmeâ ie Levi) among Hange and the Titans.Â
Moreover, hearing âfour eyesâ was unexpected and we can only imagine it was surprising for Hange too. Since we might have never expected that weâd hear âfour eyesâ in the original manga again, itâs perplexing, but feels filled with something like nostalgia.Â
With Hange taking over as commander and the world rapidly changing, we get the feeling that thereâs a distance between them, at least from what is shown to us from the story.Â
Because of this short exchange about Titans, all at once we are brought back to âAn eccentric, Titan-loving section commander,â and âCaptain whoâs fond of four-eyes,â and itâs moving.Â
Thereâs a little pause (note: talking about the ââŚâ before Hange starts talking) at the end of Leviâs lines and the start of Hangeâs dialogue. One wonders if it couldnât be a mix between surprise and relief on Hangeâs end.Â
Also, as many others have said, Levi is answering Hangeâs âIâd prefer if we live here together,â from the forest, to the best that he can. There was no reason to look back at that scene in relation to this because Levi seemed to have brushed off Hangeâs shocking statement, but since everyone was referencing that scene, a second re-examination was in order. (Note, the author actually said something a little more personal, so I condensed it to match a more essay-like statement)
Levi could have been surprised.
Someone who heâs known for a long time, and supported each other, and can admit that (Hange) can be troublesome sometimes, but also they hit it off well, yet each of their own responsibilities have become heavier and the world is in this state⌠in a situation like this, when suddenly alone together in a quiet forest, he might think Hange has stopped thinking if seriously suggesting to run away and saying things like âletâs live together.â
Under circumstances like this, if it were us, weâd likely want to do it, but remember we have responsibilities, maybe we donât know what the other person feels, perhaps weâd rather we never heard it, so we pretend not to. In Leviâs case, perhaps pretend to sleep (pretending to not be able to hear it) or when he wakes up, change the subject completely. Â
Itâs unlikely that Levi could give an answer on the spot, and would want time to figure it out.Â
(Thereâs more to the essay but itâs thoughts on relationships between people and some other things that donât apply to the quote)

Notes concluded from various twitter surfing:
Many JP fans think Leviâs statement alluded to the forest scene. Itâs like his clumsy answer to Hangeâs proposal, since he didnât give a direct answer. Actually the essay above felt his answer was cold and ignored Hange. But Hange doesnât seem displeased about it.Â
As many have said, Hange and Levi are definitely âadultsâ in this world. They both understand itâs not feasible to do the things they want to do, because their duties supersede that. Hange carries the immense duty of commander, and both hold the responsibility to stop Eren or fight for humanity as a whole.Â
Itâs rather evident to me, even as an ordinary reader, that Levi did not want Hange to go. In fact, Hange says, čĄăăăŚ, âlet me go.â and anticipated Levi would try to stop Hange. Mind you, itâs not ârelease meâ but âI have to do this, so donât stop me.â It took him three panels, focused on his dead-like eyes to finally say âDedicate your heart,â something heâs apparently never said before. To me, âDedicate your heartâ is a self-sacrificing quote when applied to the Survey Corps. Pretty much âgo in bravely, and donât expect to come back.â Levi is a âLive and come backâ type. The strange thing is that Levi puts his hand on Hange and says it.. in Hangeâs place..? Itâs a salute before battle, but here it feels like a gentle sentence. Why it was delivered that way? I hope that Isayama will answer these questions in future interviews.Â

Another thing, Levi says ăżăŚăŚăă to Hange, a now deceased person. Levi has never asked anything from the dead. Heâs mentioned fulfilling his promise to Erwin about killing Zeke, but some have found it strange for Levi to ask Hange to âWatch me (kill Zeke.â) (edit: the point is that Levi asked Hange to keep watching him, so it seems that his promises and goals may have changed)
One user said something pretty sad. âFor Levi, I think Hange is treated as a MIA. Even if thereâs no chance of survival, if Levi looks at Hangeâs death, Hange has ended for him right there. So since Hange hasnât ended, he said â watch out for me.â Thatâs the reason why Levi, whoâs looked at dead soldiers in the eye, didnât look at Hange.â
Itâs simply, Levi didnât say âRest in peace,â or âGoodnight.â but âSee ya, Hange. Keep looking out for me.âÂ
ďźżďźżďźżďźżďźżďźżďźżďźż
Going back to the quote about Titans, the summary is, that in Japanese, Leviâs speech seems incredibly nuanced because he uses language that suggests that Hange and him have come to a mutual feeling, and itâs simply by stating âwith Titansâ (but thereâs a mutual love with me). Thatâs why the above essay questions if this isnât a misprint or mistake, or perhaps itâs nothing at all. (I want to point out, that one user suggested it could refer to Eren, but it seems unlikely)Â
This is his âanswer.â And Hange saysâŚââŚWeâll get along soon enough.âÂ
Thereâs a ââŚâ before Hange says that, indicating a pause, whether out of surprise by being called âfour-eyesâ, or carefully thinking on how to respond to âă¨ăŻâÂ
Some other notes before I close this up, I thought this was a nice thought on LeviHan:
Hange was introduced while talking and having contact with Levi and Hange exited while talking and having contact with Levi. Really, Hangeâs story started and ended with Levi.Â
ďźżďźżďźżďźżďźżďźżďźżďźż
I apologize if this seems everywhere, Iâm not particularly fond of writing, but for Hangeâs last chapter, I feel like English speakers should get in on what Japanese levihan fans were saying.Â

So long, hange ... :(
THE MAN I WAS TALKING
by: @letustalkaboutlevihan
This man cries every night, but he doesn't want anyone to see it
This man is hurting, but he only keeps it to himself and endure it
This man is broken, because you left him alone with so much pain
This man is strong like a storm, but is also fragile as a drop of a rain
This man is afraid of being rejected, that's why he only love you in silence
This man is hot tempered, but he sticks with you with so much patience
This man secretly keeps your picture inside his drawer, and looks at it before going to sleep
This man wants to dance with you in a soft and slow music, as the peaceful night gets darker and deep
This man wants to hold you in his dreams because right there, he could hold you without end
This man still writes for you, even though you won't read all of the letters he have penned
This man talks to the moon every night, hoping that it would help him to let you know
That the man I was talking about is me, and my darling, I love you so

PAYING MY INDULGENCES IN CLOUT
the digital ghost of martin luther rises shrieking from the graveâŚ
itâs kind of weird how weâre culturally not supposed to admit that we do things for money and/or attention. Like Iâm not going to work because iâm a team player or because I care about the company mission, Iâm going so I can pay rent and buy food. Iâm not publishing my fanfic because Iâm passionate about writing or because I only care about art in its purest form, Iâm publishing it because I want attention. If I didnât want attention, Iâd leave it on my hard drive. Really, why are we supposed to pretend to have âbetterâ motivations?
like to be clear I am passionate about writing and I want to be a good writer, but when I truly just want to âwrite for myselfâ I leave it on my computer and never share it. I have plenty of things that fall into that category on my hard drive, that nobody else will ever read, but if I go through the effort to upload it somewhere? I am seeking attention and I would like it in the form of kudos, comments, and reblogs thank you
the best way i can think to describe the experience of reading moby dick is youâre in line at the dmv and this guy behind you very loudly says âwell who HASNâT had a gay experienceâ and then proceeds to tell you every detail about his life in between anecdotes about how great sperm is and how ropes work and sometimes heâll say the most poetic shit youâve ever heard in your life and them jump RIGHT back into explaining how a whale is a fish because 1) it swims in water and youâre still only like halfway through the dmv line
This was too good to leave in the tags
genuinely friendly reminder
if youâre staring down that looming heat wave and you donât have ac, or your ac canât keep up:
put your feet in a tub of water.
just regular tapwater. if you donât have a bucket or washtub you can use, run a few inches in the bathtub and pull up a chair to the side of it.
this got me through a summer in a sunbaked attic apartment with no AC, in minneapolis, where highs in the 90s are pretty much guaranteed for at least a couple weeks every summer. it was at LEAST 110 in that apartment every day of that hot stretch. i cannot overstate how much soaking your feet helps.
you can also fill a plant mister from the cold tap and mist yourself.
Another tip if you need just a quick, brief cooldown - run your wrists under cold water! This saved my ass working in a hot haunted house in the Midwest when summer decided to bugger off late some years. Also, plenty of popsicles!
oh yeah, rinsing your hands/wrists is a big help. i learned to just do that as a matter of habit while doing yardwork, even if i donât feel too hot yet â just run the hose over my hands and forearms every so often in between tasks. turns lawnmowing from âguaranteed heatstrokeâ to âpretty tolerableâ.
oh, which reminds me â donât wait until youâre Suffering to do cool-down things. drink before youâre panting from thirst. get into the shade before you feel sunburny. get ahead of it! prevention is the name of the game!
Put a cold or wet paper towel on the back of your neck. When I worked Retail we had windows behind the registers and the sun in the summer would beat down on the cashiers. Our manager wouldnât let us have fans because it didnât look good for the customers so I would freeze a wet paper towel when i got into work, and on break would bring it out and put it on the back of my neck. Most customers wouldnât notice and it kept me cool while standing there ringing people up.
Splash your face with water. It cools and clears oil that makes you feel hotter.
If you can get a small microfibre towel, I highly recommend wetting one, wringing it out a bit and then freezing it for an hour. It will stay cool for a while, and thus, will go a long way in keeping you cool when applied to the neck or face. I had to take the Central Line two Summers agoâwhich anybody whoâs ever experienced the London Underground during a heatwave knows is almost sweltering to the point of unbearableâand I genuinely think having my frozen microfibre towel saved me from passing out on the platform. You can also wrap it around your feet at night to regulate your body temperature, or even just refrigerate a pair of socks (Iâm not even kidding).
If youâre at home and you have longish hair, get it soaked and then put it up, only dry it a little bit, the water running down your face/the back of your neck will do evaporative cooling things.Â
