My biggest gripe with some jayvik fanworks is that they sometimes portray Jayce as being the only obsessive and desperate one, and I know some fans love to portray viktor being cold and distant and nonchalant but that’s just not who he is, this is the same viktor who asked Jayce to visit him the moment he saw him again, gets killed and goes back to find Jayce to ask him to join him, If anything viktor is the desperate one ,but the fandom really don’t want jayce to have anything, they always want him to be the one begging for viktor. That’s when you realize that they really don’t like Jayce at all and only see him as an extension of Viktor. Like let viktor be jealous , let Jayce feel loved by viktor for once, if you don’t like jayce then why do you guys even ship jayvik.
Ok so I’m pretty sure everyone probably already knows that Jayce and Viktor have the same eye colors and that they have different undertones.
And I just- you don’t understand how much it gets to me that their undertones mirror each other so beautifully.
We have Jayce, who was shunned from his absurd idea of harnessing magic, and who had no one to believe in him after the explosion. Not Caitlyn, and not even his mother. We don’t see that he had any friends so we can assume that those two people, as well as the Caitlyn’s mother and father, were literally the only people he interacted with/had companionship with. (I’m sure the creators could have easily shown Jayce having friends that decided to cut ties with him after the explosion. Either by Jayce recognizing them in the council room, his friends giving him disapproval, or anything really. But they chose not to show his social life. So I’m inclined to believe that Jayce really only had a very small circle of people that consisted of a kid and that kids parents, and his mother. Heimerdigger as well because why not).
He has been shown to have a naive heart, he’s been shown to have a tendency to be happy and go with what everyone else is doing. Those traits are associated with happy go-lucky personalities. But Jayce is different. One of his first on present scenes is him almost committing suicide for crying out-loud. He doesn’t have the inner strength to persevere/follow through his dreams without the help/guidance of someone else. Yes, he learned how to be happy with everyone else and perfect the, “Golden Boy” persona, but there’s a reason why he made friends with Viktor, the outcast in Piltover’s society. (There’s a point to all this I swear. But now onto his eye color)
His eyes are a notable Yellow. I have no clue how to check but I’m inclined to think it leans more towards a topaz color. And there’s definitely a green undertone in his eyes.
Now, for a guy who’s whole wardrobe attire consists of reds, golds, browns, and whites you would think that his eye color would match this obvious theme going on. But it doesn’t. Or at the very least, Jayce would rather keep the Piltover colors constantly on him instead of what would heighten his features. Like how Mel does in her attire.
The only time he used clothing that matched his eyes was when he wore his green outfit. Which is honestly probably the reason why this is consensually the best outfit he’s ever worn. (I would like to credit @jaycetalisdaily for these images)
Now let’s look at Viktor. We have this man, who was raised with a prejudice upbringing, coupled with a debilitating illness, was on a Scooby Doo chase and run with death, and was stuck as an assistant who couldn’t do anything with his intelligence in a way he wanted/deserved respect for. He, quite frankly, should have held major animosity in his heart, (not saying he doesn’t, but they make it obvious Viktor holds more self hatred than the unfair hand he was delt with with Piltover’s Autocracy rule is that the right word?) yet he doesn’t. He only wants to invent contraptions that could bring humankind prosperity.
Despite what life has thrown at him, he persevered in his pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the world. He survived time and time again despite his illness, and despite his standing in society. In contrast to Jayce, Viktor has the unyielding willpower to follow through his convictions all by himself.
His eyes are also a notable Yellow. But they are so much warmer when compared to Jayce’s. There’s red and orange blending in with the yellow.
Now, Viktor has sparse clothing outfits. He has his academy attire throughout S1 and his slutty blanket outfit/jesus attire in S2. Which objectively makes sense when you think about it. Viktor’s from Zaun and he doesn’t care to keep up social appearances like Jayce does. Or he doesn’t have a deep ingrained sense of needing to dress appropriately for society. (Not to mention, he uh, probably didn’t have the money to buy clothing at first). He comes from an upbringing of blunt and honest people who couldn’t care less of politics and social standing. (Liars and scumbags became abundant from Silco’s rule imo. Vander was a trusted leader of the Undercity and had a strong community. Silco ruled under an iron fist and twisted deals to get into power.)
When it comes to character design, you typically want the design to represent just what kind of character you’re portraying. (Where they come from, their personality, their goals, their drive, and so on and so forth). Jayce has it all over his design throughout the show. With his wardrobe changes and growth as a person. Viktor, while he does go through significant changes as a person, I’m talking about the coloring design choices. His clothes share an almost exact color pallet with Jayce. So how tf did the creators give Viktor an undeniable darker/cooler color pallets???
Through the setting.
Almost consistently, we have only seen Viktor in places with shadow, low lighting, and darker places. (Key word almost because yeah I know there’s been times he was in warmer lighting but come on, I feel like there’s a reason Viktor is mostly seen in darker atmospheres than Jayce. And yeah, there was a reason why the Hexcore, Viktor’s personal creation, was purple and afterwards Viktor’s entire body was purple.)
Suffice to say, they have distinct color pallets in the show.
Now onto the point of all this, the point of singling out the minute facts of Jayce’s and Viktor’s designs, the opposing personality traits of each other, and the subsequent complimenting of each others designs,
Their eyes.
“The eyes are the windows to the souls”
We’ve all heard that saying before, and what if there’s truth to that?
What if I told you that these two men, who far surpassed their peers and found themselves alone, where one was an outcast because of his body and the other because of his mind, found their equal and compliment to complete one another.
Jayce found his other half that matched the cooler tones of his eyes.
Viktor found his other half that matched the warmer tones of his eyes.
What if I told you I spent 3 goddamn hours on this essay because I couldn’t stop thinking about their eye colors after someone pointed out that they have different undertones.
Ok so it’s the next day and I’m just now realizing how much Jayvik I stuffed into this. (Which I mean, was kinda the point but I felt it a disservice to the genius color choices and designs for their own character.) I kept talking about good character design but I failed to explain why the decision to make the eye colors juxtaposed their character pallets but match each others perfectly was such a good decision.
One of fundamentals in character designs are the pallets. It’s why jinx and Vi are so good in their respective designs. They have opposing colors in almost everything, from clothing, to weapons, and to hair color, and yet different colored eyes that match the other’s names.
Often when doing this decision, it’s ment to show opposition and rivalry. But when it comes to creating a partnership, they use these opposite designs to complement each other, changing the color pallet to better match their designs in terms of their friendship. (We see this more visually in Sonic and his friends. I know, random media drop but it really is a good example to use in regards to character design Sonic and Knuckles are direct opposites, with them being blue and red, and different builds that oppose one another. Then we have Sonic and Tails, who have complimenting colors, blue and orange and slightly different builds to show off their companionship and character strengths).
The fact that the creators made the decision for these like minded individuals to have the same colored eyes, but change the undertones to better match the others more obvious color designs is very well done on their part. It makes their partnership make inherently perfect sense while also keeping the core reason why these two worked so well together.
Ok so I’m pretty sure everyone probably already knows that Jayce and Viktor have the same eye colors and that they have different undertones.
And I just- you don’t understand how much it gets to me that their undertones mirror each other so beautifully.

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this
I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that don’t follow the logic and science of them makes me upset
What are the most common sins you’ve seen relating to this? I wanna know
Mordor.
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like it’s from a shield. If it’s hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isn’t there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
So what is a rain shadow?
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
this is because, as clouds are forced upwards by rising land, they cool and dump their rain. so the side of the mountain facing the ocean (or an inland sea, or a great lake) gets all the rain as the clouds are squeezed out, and the opposite side gets nothing.
my favorite thing is the american great lake snowbelts! so, the 'flow' of weather across north america, in very general terms, blows from the northwest on down south and east to the gulf of mexico.
so the wind is blowing from west to east, and in the winter it's a dryer wind than in the summer because it's colder. but after blowing across a great lake for a hundred miles, the wind is wet again. and that wet turns into snow. so for all of these lakes, the big cities are on the west side, not the east sides, because the east sides absolutely suck to live on.
the sole exception is buffalo, NY, which literally has to be there because, unfortunately, that's where all the important canal stuff between lake ontario and lake erie is happening.
also this always strikes me as cool, check out where cleveland is:
it's right at the edge of that snowbelt. and you see way more cities west of it than east, too.
#but again. mordor looks like that becaue sauron made it#and he's an ass
On a Watsonian level, sure.
On a Doylistic level, Mordor looks like that because plate tectonics was a fringe, ludicrous, laughable theory that nobody outside serious geology nerds had ever heard of until scientists proved seafloor spreading in the early 1960s. The first edition of the LotR trilogy was published in 54-55. We literally did not know that plate tectonics was real until almost a decade after the book was published, so obviously, it was not something Tolkien could have been considering as he made his maps.
I don't know enough meteorological history to know when white people figured out about rain shadows and added it to geology classes, or what would have been taught about volcanoes and such. But any education Tolkien got on the subject would have been in childhood/adolescence; his college education focused on the liberal arts, not the sciences, and his professional study was linguistics and the middle ages. So anything Medieval and earlier European authors wrote about he had a pretty good chance of knowing about. But not much exposure to modern science. So his science knowledge was probably limited to "what English schools taught at the turn of the 20th Century."
I mean, it's true he didn't know about plate tectonics, but he did know what mountains look like, and that it's not normally That. And it wasn't his style to break that kind of norm without cause.
LotR has recurring themes of the reckless imposition of one's will on the natural world creating ugliness, an order you thought was inherently an improvement that in fact is inferior to what you have displaced. (Typified by reckless tree-felling; a reflection of the despoiling of the English countryside and the world by Progress.)
Mordor is a rectangle because Sauron is an asshole.
#the rain shadow thing otoh was undoubtedly total ignorance#but those mountains were made as the fortress of a demigod#too steeped in evil to understand beauty#it's *supposed* to look like something that Shouldn't Exist#like quite often this is something that happens in worldbuilding yes#things are arranged Wrong because a person doesn't grasp the underlying logic#but mordor is a bad example for the same reason it's an obvious one#it's So Very Wrong because it was designed to be wrong#to give you a bad feeling with how much it shouldn't look like that#if he just wanted it unapproachable on all sides it could've been in a caldera formation it didn't *need* corners#the corners were a choice#tolkien's job involved lots of looking at maps and things okay#meanwhile people whose lives revolved around the weather generally knew where the rain happened#long before it was formalized into 'rain shadow effect'#people not having The Science doesn't mean they don't have eyes and brains
I wrote an entire paper in college analyzing the geology of the Misty Mountains and to a lesser extent the White Mountains (the Misty Mountains are easier because we get a cross-section via Moria). One thing I discovered that still knocks me for a loop when I think about it is:
Moria is the only place in Middle-Earth where mithril is found, right? That's kind of a big deal. So, why? What makes that location so special? Is it just random?
I found a paper that had just been published *that year*, 2011 or 2012 as I was writing it, that studied the locations of precious-metals mines in the Pyrenees, the similarly long skinny mountain chain that divides Spain and France. This paper discovered that where there was a bend in the mountain chain, from one of the continental plates having an awkward corner in it that got subducted under the other plate, that had dug deeper into the mantle and caused precious-metal-bearing ores to flow up to the surface in ways they didn't do anywhere else in the Pyrenees.
There's a conversation in The Fellowship of the Ring where one of the hobbits -- I don't have my copy handy or I'd get the direct quote -- asks why they can see the Misty Mountains ahead of them at one point if they're still heading south from Rivendell, and it's explained that south of Caradhras (which you may recall is the surface mountain under which Moria runs) the mountain chain bends and runs southwest instead of due south for a while.
Tolkien had absolutely no way to know *why* this particular feature of a mountain range was associated with intrusions of rare and unique metal ores, but he had gone backpacking in mountains enough to know How Things Should Look.
(And as prev excellently points out, when Jirt made screwed-up geology it was very much on purpose. Mordor shouldn't be square! Mount Doom shouldn't be doing any of the things it does! A composite volcano shouldn't even have especially hot lava! Even the Gulf of Udun, the circular feature at the upper left corner of the square, shouldn't be like that -- perfectly round features should be impact craters or calderas, not The Mountains Just Do This In A Suspiciously Convenient Way. These are all the way they are because Sauron forced them to be, in defiance of the laws of nature. Remember, he's akin to Balrogs and was a Maia of Aulë -- he's a volcano spirit in many ways.)
Amazing work by the LoTR fandom, as always.
This also serves as an excellent example of why worldbuilding needs - more than realism - to be cohesive and work with the themes of your story.
Hello everyone!
Last year I started designing a series of Coat of Arms, themed in the spirit of Pride Month and using different mythological creatures as heraldic animals. I now aim to turn these designs into wearable pins and will be running a Kickstarter in July to fund this endeavor! I have found a very trustworthy local manufacturer, who has already shown the quality of their craftsmanship with the first batch of test pins I received, just look at the detail they were able to produce!
Since I try to support local manufacturers, which produce pins with fair wages and are more ethical than outside of Europe, the pins are more expensive to create than through the usual pipeline via Asia.
I therefore seek to crowdfund the expenses since they would be more than I can afford. If you are interested and look forward to support this little endeavor, please follow the link below to sign up for a mailing list. People who signed up on the email list and pledged during the campaign will receive an exclusive sticker set by the end of a successful launch consisting of the following designs:

I think one of the funniest abortion stances I've heard was from my parents neighbor. He's a like, hard-core libertarian viking larper guy who is very tall and very fat and very bald.
He believes a fetus is human with a soul, but also its "basically attacking the woman's body" so if she wants to get rid of it, that's "basically self-defense". He compared it to shooting a home invader. So he supports abortion not as healthcare, but as killing a baby in self-defense
Y'know I'm so glad someone reminded me of this. Because this was also discussed.
My stepmother did NOT like the way her Libertarian Viking Neighbor framed pregnancy as the fetus "attacking the woman". She incredulously told him this was extremely disrespectful to expectant mothers to portray pregnancy as so violent and negative.
Libertarian Viking Neighbor's response was that people consensually hurt each other all the time, and "there's like a whole community about that, with the acronym the one that starts with a B" And his reasoning was that if the mother was consenting to bring attacked by the baby, it in fact wasn't violent and negative because there was consent.
He brought up people consensually hurting each other, didn't go for one of the obvious answers like boxing or body mods or something, no he went STRAIGHT TO BDSM and he DIDN'T EVEN REMEMBER THE ACRONYM
Anybody else have no idea how their personality is perceived by others? Like am I nice? Am I mean? I have no idea.
When people tell me stuff about me I literally think about it nonstop for 3-5 business days.
A coworker casually said “everyone else likes you” (because one coworker was mad at me) and I was for real like ????everyone likes me??????
