some of you werenāt around for the fan fiction dot net purge of 2002 (when they banned explicit content and mass-deleted thousands of fics) and the livejournal purge of 2007 (when they deleted hundreds of blogs, disproportionately targeting queer & kink content) and it shows
this kind of policing is why ao3 was created
remember, kids, the three laws of fandom are:
- donāt like; donāt read
- your kink is not my kink
- ship and let ship
you have to get this piercing!
Do you like it?
I have it!
Yes!
yes but I wouldn't get it
No
Wouldn't be worth it

āThis month, Finland launched the worldās largest sand battery, enabling residents to remove oil from their district heating network and reduce emissions by nearly 70 percent, as reported by Euro News. If it continues to operate as efficiently and affordably as expected, sand batteries could become common worldwide. Developed by Finnish company Polar Night Energy, this battery uses excess clean electricity to heat sand to high temperatures, storing thermal energy that can later be released to heat homes and power local industries. This is not Finlandās first sand battery, but it is significantly larger. The facility in Pornainen is an insulated silo that stands 13 meters tall and 15 meters wide, containing 2,000 tonnes of crushed soapstone. The sand retains heat remarkably well, losing only 10 to 15 percent during storage and recovery, according to The Cool Down.ā
ā
Sand batteries are a significant advancement in clean energy technology.
Holy shit, this is incredible.
āThis new facility can hold 100 MWh for about a month in summer and a week in winter. Ā Thatās enough for the town of 5000 local residents.
TechCrunch estimates the Finnish batteryās costs are under $25 per kilowatt-hour, compared to around $115 for leading lithium-ion batteries.90% efficiency. It doesnāt use any ārare earthsā or critical materials. Ā Instead using locally sourced, recyclable materials.Units are scalable and modular to fit different needs and uses.
Suits small towns (like the current facility) and large scale industrial uses.
13 meters tall and 15 meters wide. Independent of geography. Ā
No supply issues due to any geo-political problems.
Designed to store energy when itās cheap and plentiful and supply when itās expensive.ā

I love how the uniforms for baseball players get dirtier as the game goes on.
I wish more people not considered extraordinary wrote memoirs. I want to read about everyone's perspectives not just celebrities y'know? I think people are extraordinary in perspective and thought and fascinating and well worth reading about.
They do! I'm a librarian, and I thought for ages that I hated memoirs, but it was just this, I didn't care about celebrities. The trick that I use is to look for memoirs that are in the guise of discussing something else. They often are actually categorized as "Science" or "essays" or more what their topic is, rather than memoir. So, my recommendation is to look into topics that are interesting to you, and things that may or may not be by experts, and you'll find some gems!
A couple of examples some of my favs that don't always get the memoir label, or only get it secondarily so they miss memoir lists:
Books with a Nature theme:
Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants | When the Forest Breathes: Renewal and Resilience in the Natural World | Something in the Woods Loves You | Forest Euphoria: The Abounding Queerness of Nature
On politics, race, etc.:
One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This | Between the World and Me | March: Book One | Research Is Ceremony: Indigenous Research Methods | Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism
Literary:
84, Charing Cross Road | Me Talk Pretty One Day | Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic | To the River: A Journey Beneath the Surface
Cookbooks:
When French Women Cook: A Gastronomic Memoir with Over 250 Recipes | Midnight Chicken: & Other Recipes Worth Living for
Poetry (because imo you don't get any closer to the author than a really vulnerable poet and annoyingly it often is cataloged as Fiction):
What the Living Do: Poems | Don't Call Us Dead: Poems | Terror Counter | The Carrying: Poems
Jingyi Li - Lean on me
Sometimes I read a fic and realize I never ever could've written anything like this. And I'm okay with that. I'm just absolutely amazed by what the author did. With nothing but words. In their free time.
