We would like to kick-off the start of Black History Month by giving a ‪#‎BlackHistoryFact‬ about dentistry. Robert Tanner Freeman was the first professionally trained black dentist in the United States. A child of slaves, he eventually entered Harvard University and graduated only four years after the end of the Civil War on May 18, 1869. Be sure to change your manual toothbrush or electric brush head every 3 months. The reason is that they become ineffective because they fray out due to brushing too hard. Most importantly, they harbor harmful bacteria that can cause infections such as gingivitis and periodontist. You should also change your toothbrush if you become ill so that you do not re-infect yourself.

Here are the bad guys that contribute to tooth decay: sugary candies and drinks, starchy-refined carbohydrates, carbonated soft drinks, Fruit juice, too many citrus or acidic fruits

In order to prevent new cavities from spreading, be sure to take care of the pre-existing ones! You may follow all the preventative tips, however sometimes cavities just happen. Also, did you know that tooth decay can spread? Stop the cavity at the first sign of decay.
