At the 1998 Grammy Awards, Pavarotti was too ill to sing Nessun Dorma. Aretha Franklin filled in on 20 minutes notice. This is the result.
Not only was the performance done on 20 minutes notice, she had no rehearsal and simply heard Pavarotti’s rehearsal once on a goddamn tape player and just listened, nodded and said she could do it. the most famous opera song in the world, on one of the biggest nights for music in the world, no rehearsal, and she just went out and did it.
that’s talent
WHERE IS THE REST I NEED IT.
More backstory: she’d performed Nessun Dorma at another event two days before, but got asked to take Pavarotti’s slot and basically instantly accepted— WHICH HAPPENED AFTER THE SHOW HAD ALREADY STARTED. (The producer didn’t hear he wasn’t coming until about 1:50 before he was supposed to be onstage.) She got a recording of Pavarotti practicing, and got to sit with his conductor and rehearse until it was time for her performance (the originally scheduled one) and for a bit of time afterwards. She didn’t know that there was a 30-strong backing choir or 50-piece orchestra till she saw it on her way down. What a queen.

RNC attendees tried to hide a demonstrator’s “No racism, No hate” sign with an American flag. Clearly they failed to see the irony. The protester was from the Code Pink group — who haven’t been slowed down by this at all.
Using an American flag to cover up someone calling for an end to racism and hate is the best metaphor I’ve seen in a long time for the GOP.
@helloashrandomnessworld, @shanna-kayfabe.
The day I found out Romani people had a word for us, I died a little. How is it that every oppressed people, as much as they hate and reject their oppressors…somehow learn to hate US SPECIFICALLY.
Granted, they call us ‘crows’, and that backfires on my goth ass, but STILL, come the FUCK ON.
Anti-black racism is wild. How the fuck you dislike a group when they have never done anything wrong to your people? Make it make sense.
ROMANI PEOPLE HAVE A WORD FOR US??????
I believe psychology behind it is people with very little power will sometimes indulge in oppressive behavior to make up for their feeling of inadequacies from oppression. That if they can put someone beneath them that means while not in control at lest they’re not X people. I see this behavior a lot in all minorities and even the LGBT community.
That’s how some immigrant groups that migrated to the US become accepted into whiteness.
This is also why i consider those groups to be white, regardless of what they say now. Life if they assimilated to whiteness at the expense of anti-blackness, then they are white to me and benefit from white privilege. That doesn’t take away from their struggle, oppression or anything like that. But if you’re getting up there and being accepted into white society by reinforcing anti-blackness, and you are thus deemed white, then you’re white to me.
Sweet

realest shit i ever seen on tumblr
My followers need to repost this. It needs to reach a lot of people.
A lot of self hating black ppl wouldn’t get this
That quote. Shit. That was strong
I need us Africans to realize this. The term akata is still used in a derogatory manner. You don’t take people who were stolen and were once your neighbors and deem them inferior and unlike you.
It’s not just Black Americans that need to hear this!!
Oooweeee
