I actually deal with crime heavy parts because I travel. You’re foolishly assuming they are harmless. It’s a very easy take to have if you’re just dealing with ppl asking for money. It’s more nuanced than just existing.

Bad take/reply I’m not reading cause I know most the ppl on this ste are starry eyed 20’s year olds that don’t realize Gen Y grew the fuck up and got out in life. We aren’t talked about much because you do realize you can’t save everyone. The extent you can control the environment around you as an average person is real weight to carry. It’s actually part of therapy to get to a point you don’t bleed yourself dry being responsible for everyone and everything.

I don’t worry about homeless ppl in some areas but again I’ve seen areas you should worry plenty. It’s not always as it seems. Easier to know that fact if you actually ever interact with real poverty. I lived it. Surviving meant staying actually out of some things that may mot be the safest. It meant also disregarding some individuals because stat wise there wasn’t always a happy ending.

I really couldn’t care less what young adults and teenagers from comfortable families have to say on this. You can tell what income class ppl come from by how they discuss these type of subjects. Ppl who have never had anything to fear are very quick to push themselves into a blade because they cannot fathom a bad outcome.

Enjoy my ghost political blog that you can scroll to see my raging liberalism die in the span of a decade. I’m not conservative on any means. Considered too far left by moderates still. I’ve just decided actually doing risky things are not my vibe, I’m prioritizing myself, none of this will change in my life time. Each generation you only do a little better. The reality will settle midlife for you like it does anyone else.

I’ve also become unwillingly to deal with the nonsense now I’ve lived with poor ppl. You may never experience that. I gave up my comforts and now I know bullshit coming a mile away. Street smarts matter in life too if you want to get up close and personal with poverty.

Being a committed pedestrian in a major city will make you hyperaware of the ways urban areas will attempt to make themselves hostile to homeless people and the ways that these efforts also make life worse for everyone else. The needlessly narrow sidewalks, the uncomfortable and inconvenient seats at bus and train stops, the noise pollution from convenience stores piping loud music outside. It all sucks, it all has a negative impact on everyone simply trying to exist within a community, and it’s all in service of cruelly trying to drive a class of people from public view.

You say that until you’re the one bothered by said ppl. Yes I do vote blue and pay a ton of taxes. It’s not particularly great to be harassed for money when you’re barely paying your own. Or deal with it while just existing in public yourself. I had to literally go into the women’s restroom driving overnight because a homeless person was camping in the men’s restroom. Not even the first time. I debated whether I should leave the store clerks alone with that problem at 2am. It’s not just an inconvenient thing for upper class ppl. They don’t go near the areas they would even see that. It is mostly to get it out of the way of ppl averagely living since nobody above is doing anything about it any time soon. It’s really easy to be pro homeless ppl bothering you when it’s not you. I use to be starry eyed about this too. Started living away from my middle to upper class home. Now I get why some of these laws became a thing. It’s overwhelming to ppl who are least able to do anything about it. Your fuckwits who could don’t interact in society in a way they’d even see that. It was for average ppl by average ppl because we got nothing else we can do and it’s misery for us to also just allow it to flood our public spaces. Public spaces are mostly used by average ppl not wealthy.

This is the most malignant headline possible. The original line from his lawyer was “Every day he was doing lots of things. Meeting groups, wine tasting, skiing, volunteering. After the accident, he deteriorated abruptly and many of the activities he loved to do, he stopped doing”.

She was cleared of fault, by the way, because they proved he crashed into her. Clearly the state of Utah thinks that leaving an old man unconscious in the snow is not a criminal offense.

If it were a liberal arts degree they’d likely have an office job which is what most people with a broad degree get and the day off too…. Your anti education opinions are noted, but you clearly need to attend one because even I know most 4 year college degrees land office jobs. Liberal arts are a wide variety of subjects and you’re just throwing the term around to mean anyone with liberal opinions. Overwhelmingly those with college degrees of any kind including STEM tend to lean liberal. COVID spikes in India along with the Delta variant in around February of 2021. There were, at most, a few hundred million vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna for the entire world at the time

India has 1.3 billion people

Even if, starting in December of 2020 when the vaccine studies were completed, the world showed an amazing prescience and started sending every single available vaccine dose in the world to India and only India… Only a fraction of the population of India would have been fully vaccinated by the time cases spiked in February and it’s highly likely that Delta would have evolved anyway

Equitable vaccine distribution is an incredibly important issue to fight of future variants of the coronavirus and Western nations and Moderna and Pfizer absolutely must make it a priority by sharing existing stock, lowering prices, and waiving intellectual property protections

But blaming inequitable distribution for the current Delta variant when there was a vanishingly small supply of vaccines for the entire world at the time is phenomenally silly and completely disconnected from reality

This used to be called “Auto Shop” and “Home Economics,” subjects which were included in nearly every high school curriculum up until the 1980s. Auto maintenance, budget management, sewing skills, cooking, and other basic Adulting skills were actually taught in classroom settings. But suddenly all that money got funneled away to sports and graduation requirements shifted toward standardized tests because those were somehow more? important? than life skills? and the home ec and shop classes were no longer taught, even as electives. We’ve been steadily losing arts classes for similar reasons.

And so students leave school with a thorough grounding in football and calculus, but having no idea how to sew on a button or change a tire. 

Petition to bring back these classes in every single middle and high school in the country.

Like most things that went wrong in the 80s, this is due to Reagan. He signed the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act into law which allowed “Job Creators” to control our educational system.

Also, all those European cities that are famously friendlier to cyclists and pedestrians than cars were not always that way. Their infrastructure was also once like North America’s with its car dependency. They had to completely revamp their roads and city centers over the course of decades to become less car friendly and more eco friendly.

More roads do not equal less traffic. More accessible public transportation and safer routes for cycling and walking make less traffic, and a healthier community. Our car dependency is reversible, our biggest obstacle is the fossil fuel industry that fuels both highways and railways.

Another side to this is, we need to have places to walk to. My neighborhood has plenty of sidewalks, if you want to walk around and…idk look at other people’s houses?

Google maps tells me it’s more than a half hour walk to the nearest shopping center. Groceries, cafes, restaurants, library…all a minimum of thirty minutes walking in each direction. The nearest bus stop is…right next to the grocery store, so I couldn’t even use the bus to get there. There are sidewalks the whole way, but I don’t walk to do my grocery shopping, and I never would as long as I had any better option.

Whereas if we had a bakery or a produce store or a tea shop within, say, a fifteen minute walk? If we had smaller parks, perhaps, but more of them, so the kids wouldn’t already be tired by the time we even got there? Perhaps more benches so people who tire faster could take breaks? I know I’d walk around my neighborhood a whole lot more, and I bet I’m not the only one.

Only it wasn’t Judge Doom it was General Motors, Ford, and the other car companies. That’s also why Amtrak is so hobbled, is those same car companies. Not that Amtrak being the ONLY train service is great but it’s also the only train service because of… those car companies. The tracks can’t be maintained because ther'es no money for it because the car companies pay for lobbying to make sure there isn’t and that furthermore we think the money it would take is too much. Meanwhile roads for cars are very expensive to maintain.

End loitering laws and other hostile-to-human-behaviour laws as well. People aren’t even allowed to gather on their own front stoops in cities, or play in front of their apartment building, because of anti-loitering laws. Put benches back. Put playstructures back. Stop walling in playgrounds and maybe make some for all ages too.

Calling someone a "pussy" for breaking down in tears over being subjected to fresh, unreasonable misery is contributing to the problem of letting corporations dictate our lives and sounds a lot like deep throating the boot. (Aside from the casual misogyny of saying tears, Feeling Things, and apparently not wanting to go to work are feminine and not something a manly man would do).

Dude literally had a year of freedom. He could go outside, go to the park, stay home, just generally go where he pleased. Like a fucking adult who understood he had work to do, and obviously still got it all done because he hasn't been fired or "laid off". Now he's got a collar back on his neck and a chain keeping him at a desk between a set of beige walls and an equally boring ceiling, which was there before, but now he sees it for what it is. And why is it there? Because his boss has a deep insecurity about letting people work without oversight. Because his manager starts to look a little redundant if people can do their jobs without touching base, attending meetings, and generally doing stuff that makes said manager look like a Leader. Because there's people who think "this is the way my parents did it, and their parents did it, and presumably (but actually not) how their parents did it, so it's good enough for me and you, and let's have no more talk of this change nonsense".

This is why there's talk of a literal Great Resignation coming, as people who've come to appreciate their freedom give the bird to unreasonable bosses who want them back in an office. And other people who actually preferred the structure and routine of the desk look for another one when their own bosses decide to keep the work-from-home model coming. Covid has caused a cultural shift, and ridiculing our fellow man for wanting something better is the stupidest thing you can do.

There actually ought to be a push to “ban” physical office work; absolutely no business should be able to force you to go somewhere if your work can be done from anywhere at all.
