are people under the impression that aromantic people never want to have close personal relationships with the people in their lives. "oh i wish i was aro it would save me all this drama!" actually human relationships are always deep and complicated and messy and have the potential to hurt and help and change your life and being romantic is just one possible aspect of that. aromantic people want to be close to the people around them just like anyone else. and i know the real issue is that people think romantic relationships are the only way to be truly close to someone else but it's weird and off-putting to constantly hear the implication that aros are somehow fundamentally incapable of forming relationships that would impact their lives negatively cause they don't wanna go on dates with people. not even mentioning the aros who do

sometimes Iβm reminded that there are still people who donβt know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers β and the siteβs sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms β and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.
ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.
ao3βs main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.
there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I donβt want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you wonβt see the things you donβt want to see.
itβs your job to curate what you see. itβs not other peopleβs jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.
also you cannot censor βonly the things you personally hateβ without expecting everything else, that isnβt of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think βwhy do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? theyβre grooming childrenβ.
if you allow the things that you hate to be censored β because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.
the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be a part of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

But of course, pleasing the fake blond is never easy. βWh-what? Did you go fucking blind too?β Gary stutters out, that familiar edge coming out of him, but Hank can only focus on the picture in his hands.
Hank knows he should say something. Gary is never good when people donβt fall for his bait, but how can he when heβs holding a photo ofβ

βYeah, wellβ Never say I didnβt do nothing for yaβ.β Gary pauses, βBut youβre welcome...β Itβ s quick and rushed out and Gary looks like he wants to leave, but even so, Hank canβt help but feel as if we can still hear the laughter just by looking at this photo. As if somehow Barkovitch has managed to capture the joy of him and his best-fucking-friends in one photo.

I think they would be very good friends (and even more) and would bond over creative projects/even work together!! However in the early stages Barko was ofc difficult to work with/sit down for a conversation so Harkness would bribe him with food to imbibe him but as it turns out Gary does like talking to him.
