a separate peace by john knowles
I threw my hip against his, catching him by surprise, and he was instantly down, definitely pleased. This was why he liked me so much. When I jumped on top of him, my knees on his chest, he couldn’t ask for anything better.

“[I]t seemed, standing there in Finny’s triumphant shirt, that I would never stumble through the confusions of my own character again.”

Have you read A Separate Peace by John Knowles (1958)?
yes
no
I didn't finish it
I've never heard of it
top ten asp moments is literally the opening chapter where finny is just wearing his pink shirt and gene is like wtf man you look like a fairy and finny is just like haha yeah what if everyone thought i liked boys wouldn't that be so crazy

I went back to the Devon School not long ago, and found it looking oddly newer than when I was a student there fifteen years before. It seemed more sedate than I remembered it, more perpendicular and strait-laced, with narrower windows and shinier woodwork, as though a coat of varnish had been put over everything for better preservation. But, of course, fifteen years before there had been a war going on. Perhaps the school wasn't as well kept up in those days; perhaps varnish, along with everything else, had gone to war...
Set at a boys' boarding school in New England during the early years of World War II, A Separate Peace is a harrowing and luminous parable of the dark side of adolescence. Gene is a lonely, introverted intellectual. Phineas is a handsome, taunting, daredevil athlete. What happens between the two friends one summer, like the war itself, banishes the innocence of these boys and their world.

oh to be boys at a boarding school in new england in the 1940s
media literacy is dead again for real why did i read a reddit thread on a separate peace and they were like "i felt sympathy for gene at first but not when he MURDERED his friend how could anyone excuse that" first of all. what. also like why is the main critique of the book that it's "unrelatable" to modern audiences because it's about rich white boys in a boarding school during world war II. i'm neither rich nor white nor a man but i found it Extremely relatable because i had a best friend when i was 16-17. i reread it when i miss this best friend i don't talk to anymore. Idk about u but for me meaning can transcend place and time. i'm also a homosexual if that helps
I began to know that each morning reasserted the problems of night before, that sleep suspended all but changed nothing, that you couldn’t make yourself over between dawn and dusk.
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
boys in boarding schools have the closest thing to dyke drama cis boys can have
