That Feeling

I’m trying to capture that feeling on paper. The smell before it rains. The sound of a chilling, dissonant note. The bodies of strangers pleasantly brushing against yours as you stand in a crowd being swallowed by music. Listening to a whispered conversation when you’re near sleep. How do I use words to put those feelings in you?

Sour Slurpee

Her stomach turned and gargled. Her phone gifted her a list of suggestions from her friends: Chicken soup! i always suck a lemon. SOUP! Omg do you need soup? Ginger ale. Ginger beer haayy ;P! But nothing sounded right. Her mind sent the suggestions to her stomach, and her stomach threatened to make her retch. So none of those then. But what? She opened a new Google Chrome tab upset stomach forum post and clicked through the pages. I always drink a sour slurpee. A few likes but no comments. Maybe it would work. She bought a blue raspberry and sour patch cherry slurpee. She took a sip...and she and her squirrelly stomach agreed to thank the sour slurpee comment.

The Comedown from the Letdown

She spoke too fast, and she looked too eager. Her eyes darting to the back of the room. On her tiptoes. She tried to be nonchalant. Tried to stop her body from leaning in his direction. A sunflower. A damn sunflower, that’s what she was. Stretching and turning and seeking. She thought she was putting off an air of calm and detached, but her anticipation, her hope for maybe, burned through her and filled the shop with heat. With energy. 

When he finally came around the corner, her anticipation rushed to surround him. He flinched as it struck. He stepped back.

Too much. Too intense. 

Desperate.

She used his name, she recalled their past conversation, she laughed too loud and spoke too high. He waved halfheartedly, he mumbled and smiled, and she burned him until he retreated from her assault. 

She deflated. What? Why? Not what she was expecting. Devastating. It had seemed so promising. She couldn’t understand why this always happened? Why did this always happen? Didn’t they have so much in common? Well, maybe next time. Maybe the next one. Maybe someday. 

She should not have anticipated maybe.

In Anticipation of Maybe

Melatonin gummy. She rolled over and checked the clock. The excitement kept sleep at bay. Because of the possibility. Wednesday’s plan had become Tuesday’s happy, spontaneous happening. A Wednesday romance turned into a Tuesday chance. A small victory that kept hope alive. But now she was in this...waiting space. This maybe space. Was he in this space? Was this really a space, or was she stretching the truth? Melatonin gummy. Her mind softened, and she felt like a drowsy child. Her fuzzy mind was welcomed. She couldn’t wait for tomorrow. She wished tomorrow would never come. A Friday advance? Her mind drifted and pulled her eyelids closed. Her heart quivered in anticipation of maybe.

Wednesday Romance

On Wednesday I think I’ll take a chance                                                         I say I think in case I blanch

And walk away from The Fabricare Man Abandoning the hope of his tan hand

Holding mine as we walk along Talking “nerd life” all day long

I’d ask him about that flash of tattoo That I spotted when his face was brand new Well not truly new but finally seen I’d tell him I think we’d make a great team

Just imagining trying Sets my heart a-flying

And maybe it’s stupid To hope that dear Cupid Will help me help him see And maybe I’m crazy

Inhale and exhale It’s ok if I fail If he says no thank you I might be a bit blue But it will still be a good thing And I’ll be proud I said something

So yes friends on Wednesday I will take a chance On The Fabricare Man and a Wednesday romance

I’ll walk up to the counter and I’ll ask if he’s there I’ll wear a cute bow in my black poofy hair When he comes ‘round the corner I’ll put on a smile And I’ll as him to sit and chat for a while
