Ok. Not to call anyone out. Honestly. I mean this and I can’t stress that enough. Y’all are swell people. But I see this a LOT. and like 90% of the “unplayable LS1 / wtf is going on, man????” can be solved by talking to https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Magister_Ela_Makkay this nice lady.
Don’t just watch the cutscene, actually talk to her. She has audio lines as well as what she says goes into your chat window. I see so many people who go “I watched the cutscene then jumped into S2, and I have no idea who these people are” and I ask “well did you ask the NPC when you talk to her?” And the reply is usually “Uh. No?”
I agree that some S1 content should be re-done such as Rox’s instance, Braham’s instance. (I just really want them to do something with the Hatchery and Cragstead, ok?) But this lady right here answers the “who are these people who are following me” issue. She gives you their origins and their development through LS1. You can then jump into S2 and be up to speed. The cutscene focuses on Scarlet, sure, but you wanna know who your homies are, and sweet little Ela has the answers.
So much of LS1 was a hot mess, ANet learned from this and moved on, and I can’t blame ‘em, lol. One time only event like the Ancient Karka King, 4 weeks of living story updates that was literally “We added this npc” and then “we gave this npc some dialogue” and then “we added this other npc” and then “we gave them changing dialogue” This carried on to Season 2 where the highlight of the week was literally “watch this vine in Silverwastes grow. There’s your content, kids”. Dry Top being built up was super tedious as well. I still hate that map because of how the story was told. Sure Marionette was cool, and the destruction of LA was super neat and farmy, and being displaced to the Vigil Keep for-ever, but stuff like, waiting for LA to get re-built went on for way too goddamn long where we would lap up every patch update in the hopes of an NPC saying something new!
If you’re new to GW2, or started the story halfway through or whatever, or just like reading lore and story, there are two wiki pages I will sing to the heavens about.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/The_Movement_of_the_World - This is all pre-GW2 stuff and explains what’s going on, who the major players are, and where we’re at in the big picture.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Living_World_Season_1 - A really nice summary of the LS1 story if you don’t want to watch the 3 hour YT vid about it. There’s so many links to find out more info, but honestly the article is pretty self contained. I know y’all would much rather have this spelt out in game, but soooooooooooooo much of it was just filler. I’m sad for anyone who missed out on Faren being almost cooked alive though. Anyway…
It’s not perfect, I get it. It sucks that you’re missing like chapters 10-20 of a 50 chapter book. But that sweet Priory lady really does do most of the work on giving you the info.
As I was writing this I saw about 3 appropriately dressed / AP for their progress people run up to Ela, watch the cutscene, then run off. 2 people of similar stature just triggered the cutscene, exited and left off. Sure, they could be alt accounts or whatever, but at least one of them had to be brand spanking new.
Okay, whew. *gets off soap box* Back to your regular GW2 tumblr. Again, not calling anyone out, I just had to point out Ela, because it seems like 98% of people don’t talk to her based on what I read on the forums, reddit, tumblr. <3 you all :)
