One thing I really like about Neptune is that she makes being an opinionated bitch her whole personality, and yet she's such a fucking liar. One of the central themes in We Know the Devil is denial, and one of the ways it is expressed is in what isn't said. WKTD spends most of its time talking around things, using hints and subtext to communicate the truth where the characters won't. And then here's Neptune, who makes it her business to always call out bullshit, who is so incredibly loud about it, and even she talks around most of the actually important stuff. "The midwest is great. All you have to do is not say it out loud," she said, like a liar.
Neptune fucking hates the silence, but at the end of the day, she's too scared to actually, meaningfully break it most of the time. She uses the facade of a mean bitch who doesn't care what anyone thinks to avoid having to confront the things that scare or hurt her. She's angry and she loves to let you know, but if you ask her what she's angry about she'll tell you half truths, blaming largely superficial shit when the truth is that she's angry at things so big she can't even really find the words, and if she did it wouldn't matter. It's not the kind of thing you can fight with words.
So she talks and talks and talks and bottles all the things she actually wants to say up inside of her for as long as she possibly can. God forbid she admits she cares. Then she'd have to feel things.
