This Tumblr post made me think about what type of society Barnacles lived in pre-Octonauts.
Polar Bear are typically solitary creatures, only getting together for two things - mating, and cubs who stay close to their mothers, not their fathers.
I imagine other polar bears saw him as 'weird' because of his paternal nature. His only real companions would have been Bianca - his sister - and Tracker - someone who had been tutored by him.
Then, he became an Octonaut. Maybe due to Inkling asking him about it, and seeing his care for others, knowing that would make him a great Captain. And vowed to protect those under his care.
And protect he does! Barnacles would put himself last every time if it meant his crew - no, his family - made it out okay. However, the rest of the Octonauts do their part to make sure Barnacles doesn't overdo it. (Seriously, sometimes, Barnacles makes Kwazii seem cautious if he's keeping others safe.)

BarNix Wedding RP Event Side A
It was an overcast morning in Trinidad, the clouds promising rain as they lingered in the air. On any other day, it wouldn't a good omen. But that day was different for a particular couple. Rain on a wedding day symbolized abundance, they heard.
Nix stood before a full body mirror, her heart racing in her chest as she got ready for her big day. She was giving marriage another go. It was nerve-racking. But somehow, everything felt so right. Even at that very moment, she knew it was going to be far different than her first wedding. The fact that she was wearing a dress she picked for herself and not one she was forced to wear spoke volumes.
"You know, I never thought I'd find myself ever doing this again..." Nix admitted with a light chuckle.
”Ooh… You look just amazing Nix!”
A heart woman’s voice, almost similar to Barnalces but not quite popped up behind Nix. Bianca was helping Nix with anything she could assist with during the… What do you call it? Pre-wedding?
“I can’t believe Barnacles is getting married to you, I’d almost say your too good for him… but you two like peas in a pod!”

Allegedly, of course. I'm not capable of such a thing.

“ Your stuttering and this voice recording is enough proof. I know when a lie is told, anyone smart enough can hear and see right through you. ”

Pearl's tone switched to being more monotone and stoic.
“ But I shouldn't waste my time on this, I've got plans more important than you'll ever be. ”
Jabez: "Pfft... All talk and no bite! Then again, messing with me would be unwise! I am easily the most feared man in the Caribbean."
“ Oh really? I don't remember asking, aghaidh siorc. And fyi, I do bite I just don't want to waste my energy on something as pathetic as you. ”
Jabez: "Or maybe you're just afraid of me and don't want to admit it!"
“ Afraid of what about you? About how ugly you are? ”
Jabez: "You dare call me ugly?!"
“ Yes. It doesn't take a genius to see that. ”
Jabez: "I'll fight you, woman!!"
