"I miss my sandwich."
"It really makes me uncomfortable when naked people follow me... I wish I had a sandwich."
The visit was late at night, unscheduled and undiscussed. She knew well enough that he was awake, courtesy on the messaging system. So there she was, dressed in a long, buttoned dress with nothing underneath and a data slate in hand, to keep appearances. The guards knew her and without any interrogation went to ask if he is to admit her. She hoped he will, otherwise it would be pretty awkward, especially after thier little banter.
Corvus was not asleep. he had been relaxing in his large chair, reading through some of his captain’s reports when there was a tap on his door. One of his sons announced his assistant was here and he frowned. It was a late hour for her to be up. He gestured for her to enter, concerned that there might be something wrong. “Has something happened?” he asked when she entered. He was dressed in loose fatigues and a black robe covered his shoulders, concern was etched on his face.
Seeing him concerned made her think it was not a good time to be here or maybe she did not pull it as perfectly as she thought. Still, there was no way back now. Putting her data slate on the nearest flat surface, she approached him.
“About the things she discussed before …”
Her fingers deftly undid the buttons and the dress fell in a pool of cloth at her feet.
What was she… oh. OH! Now he recalled. They’d spoken of this previously and he wasn’t sure how serious she was being. He certainly had not expected her act as quickly as that! He would be lying if he thought she looked terrible though. His black eyes had widened but a smile had grown on his face.
“I remember them well,” he said, gesturing for her to come over, “Though I was not sure how serious they were.”
With a smile of her own, she approached him, her knees almost hitting the armrest of his chair. If he wanted more, he would have to show it with actions.
“I think we both knew it was bound to happen.”
After all, their relationship had deepened - from professionally friendly to outright asking scandalous things friendly.
He leaned forward, black hair brushing over his shoulders as he regarded her for a moment. Her confidence oozed from her in waves, though he was not too worried about that, he knew what he was doing well enough.
“Eventually,” he said with a small nod.
Reaching out with his huge hand, he ran his hand over her hair, gentle and unintrusive for now.
“Now is as good as any time.”
She still did not move, letting him pick what to do and how to touch her and where to touch her. A shiver went up her spine when his fingers brushed her shoulder while her touched her hair.
“It’s been a while,” he warned. Aware that this was not something he usually did, with anyone. Not since...
Still, she smelled rather nice and he shuffled forward in the chair. His hand slipped to her shoulder, her skin was soft, delicate under the pads of his fingers.

💋 for a random kiss. - accidental kiss
Corax felt like the biggest idiot that had ever lived. He put it down to not knowing that much about mortals. She had leaned in to tell him something, of that he was sure, and he had mis-read the intention and had kissed her instead. He had pulled away the moment he had done so, a bright flush on his white cheeks. He stammered an apology and pressed his lips together, unsure what to do now.
“In some ways,” he said with a gentle nod of his head, “I do nto mind being here, though I would very much like to go back to Deliverance, or Lyceaus as we call it, and make sure it is as it should be. I feel responsible for it in many ways, and the urge to check up on it is strong.” He took another sip of the tea, sure she was able to understand at least some of his worries.
“Maybe we can reroute after we are done here?” she suggested. It was not very honest to change plans during the Great Crusade for personal reasons, but surely it could be explained as ‘need to do it in order to not think about it and do his job properly’. “I am sure it can be done. And if there is a reason to worry, you would have saved an important planet so no criticism will come for that.”
“It is a welcome enough thought,” he said, “And we are not far from Lyceaus either; perhaps I will look into it for after we are done. It would be good for everyone else to return home as well.” Some of the mortal crew had family back there and the astartes, well, some of them did as well. Their thoughts towards their families might not be the same, but the time would be well spent.
She smiled.
“Hopefully soon, then.”
It would be a nice vacation for her as well. Especially of the planet was in good shape, as the reports indicated.
Looking at Corvus, she could see how the idea made him look less morose. Not that he was a grim person, no. But still, he looked … happier. Like a child promised that tonight, he can eat only desserts.
“Yes, I will show you some of the nicer places if we cna make it,” he said. It was only fitting, seeing how it was her suggestion in the first place.
He sipped some more of the tea, his thoughts drifting to the huge list of tasks he had yet to complete this day. He took a deep breath and was about to ask for a data-slate when there was a light tap at the door. It then opened and another astartes stood to rigid attention in greeting. “The deligates from the mechanicum are here, Lord.” he announced.
“Sent them in,” he nodded.
Before she could thank him for the offer, the mechanicus delegation arrived. Ushered in by the astartes, they entered the room with their typical attitude of lacking any urgency. Atina liked them a lot - simply because she could not read their motives as easily as a human. They did not gossip, did not theorize from the point of human logic, but pure statistics and numbers and in most cases had simple demands. Time, usually, to find some ancient relic of technology. Or permissions to do something that could benefit all, but mostly them. The key to dealing with the ‘mechanical buggers’ as she fondly called them in private, was to ignore any human decency and act towards them like towards a servitor. Short sentences, no pleasantries, straight to the point talk. It was hard for her to do so without showing emotion, which was useless with them, so she ignored them and let Corvus deal with them. If he needed her for anything, he would, undoubtedly ask and only then would she open her mouth.
The conversation with the Mechanicum was interesting, though perhaps not as productive as he would have liked. Their request was more for assistance with a matter than anything else, which he reluctantly agreed to.
“Atina,” he said, turning to the remembrancer who was rapidly becoming his assistant, “Inform the bridge and crew that the Mechanicum will be providing them with co-ordinates for travel.” He knew he could rely on them for that much at least.
They shuffled out after that, leaving the three of them alone again. It had been two hours of discussions, he wondered what was next…
“Of course.” she said, immediately turning her data pad on to do the task given. Playing assitant/spy was fun and she enjoyed it immensely. Taking a look at the attinery for the day, she waited for the Mechanicus to leave the room, before turning to the Primarch.
“And this was the last meeting for the day. Planned, at least.”
“I must say I am relieved about that,” he said with a small sigh. “I need a shower, something to eat and some quiet time to think through what they have told me,” he added as he ran a hand through his fine, black hair. “If you will excuse me, both of you, I shall attend to that now.”
He got to his feet then and stretched up, glad for the end of the meetings for now.

He looked her in the eyes, his black ones searching hers. A small smirk touched the corner of his mouth before he spoke, “I wonder how flexible you are, how long you would last and how much of me you could take.”
“Flexible enough.” she replied nonchalantly, as if informing him of the weather. “Would not last very long if you decide to tire me outright and I think I can handle as much as most women, but without trying I cannot say for sure.”
“Well, there would be an easy way to find out, though I dare say that it would not be quick,” he said. Her matter of fact response brought the smile to his lips fully, reaching his eyes and softening his taciturn face.
“Of course. Do you want me to put it in your attinery for the day?” she pulled her data slate out. “You have a scheduled meeting with your first captain, a thirty minutes break and a meeting with your Legion’s Chaplain. We can fit it there, as everything else is full.”
“There is no rest for the wicked,” he said with a shake of his head. Scheduling such an act seemed odd in his mind, it left him cool. “Come to my quarters later on, we can see what happens then,” he said, relenting as much as he could. He knew he was busy and that was never going to change.
She grinned at him. “You are blushing, my lord. Don’t worry, I will join you without notice or invitation.”
He gave her a firm nod, the smile slipping as he knew he had to attend a meeting, “I shall see you then.”

ask-corvus-corax
It was not an ideal option and Corax knew that. His son was important to him, they all were of course, but Khakir had been there from the beginning. He was not Terran, he knew Deliverance before it had been so; he ahd worked in the prison, he had helped liberate the planet and its people and Corax felt he had a strong duty of care to those he had known since his childhood and he would stop at nothing to try and make things right for them. It was a shame he could do no more in this case, not yet at least.
At least Khakir accepted the order to rest and relax. It might not help a great deal but it was all they could afford at the moment. He felt terrible for threatening him with Ghelt, however the response from Khakir did bring a wry smile to his lips. “Ghelt is very diligent in his work, as you are, though I think in this case we can let it slide for now. I do not wish to cause issues and I dearly hope that this will pass and become an event of the past.” He would keep a watch on it however, there was no way he was going to let this happen again and become a wider problem. If Khakir could be affected in this way, there was no reason none of the others couldn’t.
The vox then chimed in and Corax let out a soft little sigh. “There is no rest for the wicked,” he said, “As you well know,” he added. He pressed the activation stud for the vox and informed them that he would be available momentarily. It was likely to be something inconsequential but he had to make sure just in case it wasn’t. Sometimes, it was a nuisance being in charge. He did not need to know every piece of information as it came in. he never complained however, he accepted it with the usual taciturn expression.
With what info was spoken revolving around Ghelt’s person was far from inaccurate, and though his close friend wasn’t the Chief Apothecary of their Legion, he could so very well act like it at times. He was a busybody, every vigilant, very methodical about his work and patients, and wasn’t above manhandling anyone when he felt he so needed to. And despite being one of the more reserved Ravens, a man who socialized very rarely and spoke only when angered or felt the need to place in his own commentary outside of medical necessities, he’s much like the phrase ‘a lot in a small package’, if that package were Astartes size. Though his Lord’s next set of words caused him to nod, as he too wished that this issue would cease in its already long persistence and die off; it almost reminded him of one of the Remembrancers who had caught a bug while on a recently complied world, having been sick for several weeks on end before finally recovering.
“You and me both,” he replied softly. “I’d prefer if this would pass much quicker than it has been, I would like to return to my work at a full mental capacity then this dreadful past week of hauntings and sluggishness.” He was being more truthful now on how he felt. Troubled still yes, with what was plaguing his mind, but he did want to recover, wanted to pull through this and out of the muck entirely, and he wanted to do so quickly. Whether the reason be for regulation duties, for the upcoming compliance, or simply for his well-being, any reason was good enough, really. Though he quieted himself with his Liege’s vox beeped softly, allowing Corax to take the message without the disturbance of his chatter.
When addressed again he shifted in his seat, actually becoming quite comfortable in the way he’s been perched for a while now, almost as if he’s ready to fall asleep right then and there. “It would seem so. Mind keeping me up with the details?” It was a minor request, one that if he were a lesser officer or of rank he’d likely be declined, but he was certain that his relationship with his Lord would grant him a bit of leeway. “Just to keep me up to speed so I don’t miss too much while I’m…Uh, on forced retirement for the day.” He honestly wasn’t sure what else to call it.
The words ‘forced retirement’ jarred a little, though they did bring a gentle smile to Corax’s face. He let out a soft sigh before he spoke. “A simple rest day, you’re not being punished for this,” he said, “I need you to be well and if this helps, then so be it.” He did not want Khakir to think that he had done something wrong by confiding him, it was far from that. “And I will ensure you know what is going on. The work will not progress so far in a day that you’ll feel completely out of touch,” he added. A day was not a huge about of time while they were travelling however and he knew that Khakir would cope well enough. “If anything large changes however, I will let you know.” That was a promise. He had not lied when he had said that he needed Khakir for the coming compliance.
He then listened to the information that had been sent and shook his head. “It is a good job we are far out,” he said. “Diplomacy is a tricky line to walk, they had said that they will treat with us and discuss a united future, however they are now demanding to speak with our leader and him alone. I do not think he will heed that call,” he said. He then switched the subject and gave Khakir a tight lipped smile, “Don’t you think on that for today, you now need to go and rest, or try to,” he said. Unloading those concerns on to Khakir was not going to help his mind settle in any way at all.
Khakir looked rather comfortable where he was and he shrugged. “You could even stay here if you so wish, I’ll ensure the room is marked as occupied and no one will come to disturb you,” he said. If he was happy here, there was no need to move needlessly. There was nothing wrong with him catching a snooze here, the chairs were good. Corvus however, he had far too much to do so sit idly. He got to his feet and stretched his arms upwards. “I need to go and review the information we have on the residents of the planet, check in with me in twenty four hours,” he said. That was an order.
"Mine!"
“Sister?” he frowned. “You would claim me as property?”
Continued from here [x]
The hand on her shoulder brought a small smile to Evren’s face; she laid one of her own on it, russet against pale. From day to day the tiredness was like a wave, advancing and receding. Some days she could barely stir from her bed and did nothing but sleep. Other days she wanted to nothing but charge into the enemy lines and spill blood. And on rare but blessed days, she almost felt like she did before. She could smile and laugh freely, turn her mind to other things but war. And sometimes it lasted more than a day - once, it was a whole week.
“I hope so too…” she replied. “No, I know I will. Just being here - with you, with your sons - is doing everyone a lot of good. Even if it’s just been a few days I can see it. If it wasn’t for- Some of us were talking about going into the Eye…”
Evren took a breath and nodded. Deep down she suspected there was little the apothecaries could do for her - it was a job for the ones who made the wards and protective charms, if anyone - but there was no harm in following Corvus’ advice anyway. They might have something to help her sleep and keep away the nightmares. For a moment her thoughts, too, wandered toward Magnus. A stab of pain went through her hearts when she realised just how much she missed her brother. If she could pick any one of them to bring back, it would be him.
“You’re right. I’ve got enough on my plate without conjuring up phantoms.” she said. “What I need - what everyone needs - is a good cleanse. And I don’t just mean physically with a spa day. There was some nasty magic being thrown around, some bad juju, and it’s clung to all of us. It’s like a toxin, building up in the body and making you sick. Our psychic immune systems need to heal.”
It felt good to hear him laugh, to hear real warmth in his voice. “Mind you, I’d probably pop out now and again to check up on everyone and some snacks.”
Her words were well met and he nodded. He had no idea how you went about cleansing the soul or getting rid of that negative energy other than giving it time. Time was something they were short of however, they had to get going and see how many of the other jackals they could round up and find. Maybe the journey to that section of space would prove to be enough. Somehow, he doubted it.
“Snacks I think is something that we can do,” he said, the warmth never leaving his voice. At least she seemed to like the space he had for her.
The rumble of the engines deep below them changed. They were beginning to cycle up. In half an hour, they would be ready to move to the jump point. It would not be long before they were underway.
The vox chimed, informing everyone what the noises had already told them. Corvus looked at Evren and smiled once again, “It’s going to be a while before we reach the section we need to search,” he said, “Is there anything you wish to do while we travel? It seems a good time to divide the companies into groups and get them working together.”
If they were bunking together, it would be a good time to set them in their teams and have them train together too.
