Raina heard the soft footsteps, she didn’t bother to stand or open her eyes. She had grown accustomed to his visits taunting seemed to be something he couldn’t get enough of. Or was it time for another “experiment”?

“What you call ‘eggs’ actually develop prior to your birth,” he corrected absentmindedly as the chirurgeon made delicate adjustments to the instruments and drips that kept his specimen docile. “They merely lack the hormonal— broth, if you will, that your body begins to produce at puberty to allow them to develop beyond oocytes.” His eyes met hers briefly before he dismissed her. “But you are correct that they are not what I was most interested in. I will leave that to your imagination though.”
He flicked a switch, the bed lifting her from her prone position before brushing the Rod of Torment against the sensors. The weak moan of agony confirmed their activation.
“And while I am not ungenerous, I am not so generous as to allow for something that is not relevant to my interests,” Fabius informed his specimen. “Try again.”
“Your biology lesson is wasted on someone who simply doesn’t care. I’ve spent my life fighting, learning both strategy and technique. Science hasn’t mattered to me before and it most likely will never matter to me.”
Raina rolled her eyes, and the grimaced. “You want to talk about yourself so egotistical. Such they typical son of Fulgrim. All you /Emperor’s Children/ are the same.” She spat to the side her eyes narrowing at Fabius.
“But if you must talk why don’t you pick the topic as you do seem to love the sound of your own voice.”
“Uneducated and ignorant,” Fabius tutted. “I suppose I should hardly be surprised.”
He leaned against the nearby table to begin sterilising various instruments.
“And your assumptions are just that, my dear, and casting your courteous host in such an unkind manner is just rude.” He continued his prep work, arranging his papers and putting others away. “You and I both know that the topics you suggested are of no interest to me.” He shook his head. “What a discourteous guest you are.”
He tied his hair back, slipped on his lab coat, and washed his hands. “But no matter. Let us discuss your family. Your uncles’ and father’s disagreement that is almost certain to end poorly for all parties involved.” He flipped a timer. “What do you think, Raina?”
Raina shakes her head in disbelief. “ Do you really wish to hear my opinions on that?” She chuckled a warped sound. “You are correct, betrayal never ends well for anyone. Especially a family. But I know which side is in the right and which side will win.” Her voice struck with a note of convection.
“As for being a discourteous guess, perhaps you shouldn’t have restrained me and experimented on me. I would be a lot more pleasant if I wasn’t in the hands of the son of traitorous bastard.”
She realized she had been straining against her bonds then relaxed. “It may not be anytime soon, but one day you will answer for what you’ve done.”
“One can hardly refuse such a valuable gift from Lord Fulgrim,” Fabius chided lightly. “Particularly when you are the jewel of the collection.”
His gaze slides over to the door to the storage room with a smile. “You are contributing to science, my lady, and what more could you ask for?”
