[OOC] Tver & Novgorod headcanon

"But wait why is Novgorod a nation and not Tver?"

Novgorod was founded independently amongst the Kievan Rus group (Rus Bela and Ukraine) and could arguably also be the Rome/Germania/grandpa/bigbro equivalent since its the "oldest" and the one that eventually absorbed into the younger countries. They refer to themselves not as a part of Russia, but as The Great Novgorod, and have a lot of history outside of Muscovy but still a part of Kievan Rus. Yet, like Ukraine and Bela, you could easily segregate the history of Novgorod from the history of Muscovy. There's actually so much information there that I'm not actually familiar with the history of Novgorod itself.

Tver, however, was a city arguing for ownership over Russia. They were Russian, they identified as such, but they were vying for leadership of the state. Meaning there was no segregation from the Russian identity. Their history is an easy read, and though there's some conflict between the cities, they reunite with Russia when Ivan the Great comes around and there's not really a loss of identity to do that.

Nyeh nyeh nyeh I’m Novgorod but you must call me Novgorod THE GREATbecause I’m soooo fancy and better than youuu.

Tver though, Prince Mikhail wanted me to come live with him in Tver, and I was going to! But Mongolia killed him… and then Dmitry wanted me to go there again, but now Ivan’s demanded I come live wit him…

I think it’d be really nice if they could all just get along and I could join the grand duchy, and be with my sisters again, and Mongolia wouldn’t stand a chance against Lithuania! Because he’s really awesome and strong! He’s already protecting my sisters!

But naw, its based off the shadowy figure from the comics and then annabelle’s elaboration on it— Sephi plays my naran headcanon. I think we kinda pioneered the idea! Since everyone calls him Naranbaatar now. xD

We do 2p as hair down and a lot, lot nicer and more motherly but passive aggressive… and 2pRus headcanon I see as siding with the golden horde when offered gold and prizes for being compliant, as part of Russia did do that— where as 1p embodies the side that rebelled. ))

as for the reason I never gave him a beard it’s because in my studies I found that full-on facial hair wasn’t really common among the Slavs or in Russia until around the post-1400 time period, which is about two centuries past Slav’s death date but wow cool))

((Oooh that makes sense! All the books I read kind of skimmed and the way they spoke it was like “everyone before peter had a beard, the biggest of beards, they were all like dwarves” but I never went really deep into the pre-kievan-rus area! That’s good to know~ ))

((Like there is so much about the early Slavs you wouldn’t expect if you just look at post-Mongol Russian history, like how bows and arrows were more common among their militias than swords or how homosexuality among the Slavs was viewed with a similar mindset to that of Greece, it’s just. I like it.

The lit too, but I think the tales of old slavs were highly influenced by the CURRENT slavs that wrote them. So everyone had beards and stuff in all the art and pictures and nothing said other wise.

Of course many slavs were written as heroes and yanno like that guy with the shield? NAME BLANKING but you probably know who I'm talking about. The stories shifted a little because the mongols and Russian identity was nearly shattered and that seemed to influence the stories a lot too. "We are RUSSIAN and nothing else!"

So I imagine that's where all that came from. @v@ The like 7 pages of a chapter on slavic life pre kievan rus was just that... very slim, and then the tales were purely Russian tales OF old slav and all the art was old Russian art.

Bows and arrows were more common for I think all tribes but some of the references I had were displaying the typical boyar styled sword so-- conflicts in time there but I have trouble drawing bows so artistic liberty.

Of course homosexuality was A-OK. I think it was like EVERYWHERE... From what I've been told it wasn't even bad in Christian/catholic history until a particular pope came along and said it was? While other high religious authorities argued it and created a big fight, but of course the pope won and blahblahblah.

And all the pagan views up until orthodoxy came through olga BUT BLAHBLAHBLAH. you know all this but noting it for readers. ))

I remember someone else, at the very start. But the memory is all blurry and faded now... I remember he smelled like leather all the time.

But I don't really know who he was. I don't know if he was anyone at all, really! Or maybe he was someone elses papa...

But I remember is Big Sis taking care of me from the start! She's all I've ever really needed...

Papa slav based on "papa-slav"s design, which I've seen around for some time and loved! He gets a beard in this one though because its supposed to be a little earlier in his years.

There's so much confusion around the matter and no ones really sure if Russia came from the original slavs, but everyone assumes they were. So, its kind of a papa he doesn't really remember, but Ukraine probably does~ //HC
