tread quietly: Lost in the Woods

((Can’t screenshot a reply to a question that’s this long, so cut and paste it is. :’D))
AskMansi: The woods are different here, from her home in the north. To an ignorant outsider, both forests would hold no difference with each other. But to someone like Mansi, someone who has been raised with the trees and the wild, can instantly differentiate her woods from these woods. They look different, smell different, even feel different…
That did not prevent Mansi from being able to make her way around the forest. Same difference, she thinks to herself as she picks out familiar plants and landmarks, and gathers supplies for the night. For a moment, she stands quietly, at ease within the woods. Soyala, her deerling, grazes at her feet; Hok’ee the drifblim and Etchemin the lapras had stayed behind at her camp. The woods here are peaceful, she thinks, and she closes her eyes—
“Hey!”
Mansi opens an eye in annoyance. City folk? she mouths to herself warily. Soyala immediately jumps to attention, bristling.
Out of the brush stumbles a tall young woman, armed and dressed in clothes unfamiliar and strange to Mansi. A deino drags itself after her, clearly unwilling to move in the first place.
“You over there! Mind givin’ a poor lost warrior some directions?” the woman calls. “Name’s Saraia, in case ya were wonderin’.”
Mansi raises an eyebrow. City folk, indeed. But if she is a warrior… that means she is an ally. Mansi sighs.
“Directions? To where…?” she replies, straightforward as always. But even though this Saraia may be an ally, Mansi is still hesitant to give her name.

((My reply:))
Saraia rubs the back of her head sheepishly, embarrassed. “Ah need directions back tah Castelia City. Managed to get mahself completely lost somehow.” The Deino at her feet, who had been straring at the Ranger’s Pokemon warily, glares up at his Trainer and hisses. She glares back at him. “Ah’m not an idiot Falk, just…directionally challenged.”
She awkwardly brushes away some of the leaves and twigs stuck in her hair; then glances at Mansi. “Ah’m sorry fer the trouble, but ah could really use some help gettin’ back. Would yeh mind givin’ meh directions, or mebbe guidin’ meh back? Either would do.” Falk snorts derisively and returns to staring at the strange Pokemon.
Mansi raises an eyebrow. Castelia… she has heard of the human city before. Having lived in the mountains near Anville, however, she has never visited Saraia’s city before. But she has learned how to track from her tribe, and she is certain she will be able to find the city. After all, they are all the same: loud, stinking, obnoxious things that choked the land they are built on. She turns to grab a glimpse of the sky, which is still a clear cerulean blue. She has time before having to tucker down for Ibb’s exam.
“I do not know the city, but I can find it. Wait here,” Mansi says, then turns and briskly treks to her camp. Soyala trots besides her.
Are you really going to help her? she asks incredulously.
Mansi only nods and Soyala groans in exasperation. You don’t even know the human, and you’re going to waste preparation time by doing this. You don’t even know where this place is—
What is the matter? Etchemin asks, raising his head upon seeing the two approach camp.
“There is a stray in the forest. I’m only guiding her in the right direction,” Mansi says. “Hok’ee?”
The drifblim, which had been floating around aimlessly behind Etchemin, drifts towards her at the sound of his name. Mansi turns to Soyala.
“Are you coming?”
Soyala snorts. Of course I am.
Mildly amused, Mansi heads back to the woman, Saraia.
“Follow me,” Mansi says, and sets off in the opposite direction towards the city.
Saraia blinks at the sudden reappearance of the woman, now accompanied by more Pokemon. She had thought for a moment that the Ranger had simply left, and was relieved that it wasn’t the case. Nudging Falk, she follows along behind her guide, tripping every now and then on a tree root or fallen branch. Falk sighs and tries to ignore his Trainer’s clumsiness, without much success.
“Thanks for bein’ willin’ tah guide meh back.” Saraia says, carefully clambering over various obstacles. “Ah know this must be a hassle for yeh.”
After regrouping, the two women and their pokemon set off in Castelia City’s general direction. Leading the way, Mansi inwardly winces nearly every time Saraia noisily trips or stumbles, but ignores her acquaintance’s clumsiness.
“Thanks for bein’ willin’ tah guide meh back,” Saraia says in her strange accent as she picks her way over the forest floor with some difficulty. “Ah know this must be a hassle for yeh.”
A feeling of warmth takes root within Mansi at the warrior’s gratitude, and a ghost of a smile passes over her lips. Without turning around or stopping, she replies, “I will not leave an ally behind for spite.”
Soyala snorts but trots on, making a face at Saraia’s deino.
Saraia smiles warmly. "A girl after mah own heart-glad teh know you Rangers are loyal to yer allies." She nods approvingly. "Ah'll make sure tah remember this-if yeh ever need help, just let me know." Her face reddens slightly, and she stumbles yet again. "A'course, I'll need tah get out of these woods first, then ah'll be able to help yeh wit' anythin' if yeh need it." Her face reddens a bit more-she knows she's not all that great with all this courtesy stuff, but she really is happy to know she has true allies in the forest if she needs them.
Falk eyed the Deerling menacingly and hisses angrily, not liking the face it was making-not that he really liked anything, of course.
OOC: M, Q, V, and W!
M: Saraia nods firmly. "Absolutely. Ah don't care how much money yeh give me, I'll never murder someone unprovoked.
Q: Saraia laughs. "Well, ah usually prefer loud and chaotic, 'cept at the end of the day. Ah need some peace and quiet to gather mah thoughts, but every other time-gimme someplace nice an'loud.
V: Saraia frowns. "Not particularly. Ah'm none too fond of kids-they rely on others too much, and they're annoying.
W: "Hm.... If ah could live anywhere, ah think it'd be someplace with lots of plants and dragon Pokemon. The jungle mebbe?"
OOC: C: If you had to choose between your best friend or your significant other dying, who would you choose?
"Ah... ah'm not entirely sure." Saraia admits, looking troubled. "Ah'm not sure if ah'd be able tah choose..." She frowns, looking conflicted. "If ah was in love though, ah'd probably choose thah significant other, though I'd probably feel guilty fer a long, long time."
Aislin was growing used to the castle and the surrounding warriors and those in-training. She kept her distance, but watched the area day to day, when she wasn't busy training and preparing for herself, of course. She notices a woman, not to far away, looking the part of a knight. She approaches, offering a small greeting by a nod. "'Lo."
Saraia glances up from sharpening her sword when the other woman approached her, nodding back. " 'ello to yeh too. Did yeh need somethin'?" Normally she'd be a louder and friendlier, but she had just finished sparring with her Pokemon-she was tired, and not as inclined to be her usual noisy self.

Nudging Falk, she follows along behind her guide, tripping every now and then on a tree root or fallen branch. Falk sighs and tries to ignore his Trainer's clumsiness, without much success.
"Thanks for bein' willin' tah guide meh back." Saraia says, carefully clambering over various obstacles. "Ah know this must be a hassle for yeh."
“Oh… Oh dear. Ah’m sorry, I didn’t mean kill, just ya know, get in a friendly brawl? Ah’m sorry, ah really should be more clear when ah talk. Ah just like to fight and spar, I’d never… kill someone. Unless it was in self-defense or somethin’, but even then…” She shudders violently, then rapidly changes the subject.
“Anyway, ah have lots of stuff. Mostly berries and regular old plants though, that’s why ah’m so interested in learnin’ ‘bout the herbs.” She grins sheepishly, then start listing things off. “Ah’ve got most of the more common Berry plants, ya know, Oran, Pecha, Rawst, all of ‘em. A couple of the rarer ones, like Starf and Enigma. Only ‘ave one of them Enigma berry plants though. Dunno if those count as herbs though… Uhh… What else… Ah think ah have some TinyMushrooms as well.” She beams proudly, pleased at her collection. “Anythin’ in particular yer interested in?”
((spent forever looking up berries on bulbapedia xD And wow, long reply is long…))
Lillia pauses to think. “Hmm.. maybe some oran, and some pecha. Did you know that if you feed a pokemon an Oran berry, it will regain some health? And pecha berries can be used to heal poisoned pokemon. Who’d have thought?” She looked down and quickly snatched up a quietly retreating Espeon. “You’re going to have to do better than that.” “Espi~?” he trilled, feigning innocence. “Don’t you play fool with me, Loki. I can spot your tricks from a mile away.”
Saraia tilts her head curiously. “Huh. I knew berries were healthy fer Pokemon, but ah didn’t know they could be used tah heal things that specific. That’s… pretty amazin’ actually. Ah’ll send over some of ‘em soon-expect someone to deliver it or somethin’, or I’ll just do it mahself.”
Saraia glances down in time to see a Espeon try to sneak away, only to be scooped up by Lillia. “He’s a handsome creature. What’s he tryin’ to get away for? Did ah scare him off or somethin’?” She laughs, eyeing the Psychic-type curiously. She’s always been rather interested in Psychics, their power is amazing.
“There’s so much to be discovered in the world, I don’t think we have even half of the information about everything.” Lillia smiles. “Loki is definitely something,” she says, slightly tightening her grip on the elusive Espeon. “And he was just sneaking away so he could pull some jokes, right my little troublemaker?” “Espeon~”
Saraia smiles at the Espeon. “A troublemaker huh? Well, nothin’ wrong wit’ a few tricks, keeps people on their toes.” She laughs. “What kinda tricks does he pull?”
“Oh anything, mostly using his move Trick Room, to make everyone go slower, which throws people off. Maybe a Reflect, to make something look like it’s not. If he thinks he can get away with it, he will do it, and even if he doesn’t, he’ll do it anyway which has gotten me into some trouble. Look at you, proud of yourself.” Lillia sighs, “What will I do with you, my vain little peacock?”
Saraia smiles, thinking of all the chaos tricks like that must cause. "Well, he's certainly a clever creature, yeh have tah admit. Ah can relate tah the gettin' in trouble part, mah Deino's gotten me in tight straits many times-he has thah nasty habit of bitin' people." She sighs sheepishly. "What kind if troubles has this one gotten yeh in?"

Hey, I’ve got a drinking game for you when it comes to apps. The list isn’t long, but you’ll get smashed in no time.

I hear ya, man (obviously, or else I never would have posted this). I heartily enjoy medieval based stories so much (yeah, I romanticize it a bit, but I’m well aware of this). I’m going through all these pages and looking for period outfits.
And then I see someone with zippers. Oh, this guy’s got a pack of cigarettes. Oh, hey, stuff you wouldn’t see “paid company” wearing unless you with them behind closed doors.
Guys, there are some seriously gorgeous period outfits out there. And hey, it doesn’t even take five minutes of looking through Google images to find a good reference outfit if your character is Anglo-Saxon or western European. I’m challenging myself with Eastern European outfits and Arabic costumes.
If I can take a single afternoon to find these references, other people can take five minutes for the “popular” cultures of medieval times.
((I was trying to avoid reblogging this because I feel like I have harped enough on this theme, but it is my crusade so I gave up. Historical accuracy is cool. Furthermore, I’m seeing a lot of generic Europeans in this OCT: why not switch it up? Have some other cultures in the time period that were doing cool things:
MONGOLS. Kickin more ass than Europe ever did: Genghis Khan and his children conquered more land than Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Caesar, and Hitler ever dreamed about. In addition to making the Russians shit themselves to this day, they assisted in the fall of the Roman Empire by pushing other barbarians west and regularly took down those really imposing Germanic knights on tiny ponies. Plus, who doesn’t want to be part of the ‘Golden Horde’?
MALI EMPIRE. Africa in the Middle Ages tends to be overshadowed by our Western European-based view of history, but there were some awesome things going on here. Massively rich, massively powerful, the Mali Empire outclassed many of her trading partners in her day—including the Arab tribes. Plus, anyone remember the time that Mansa Musa I rode through Cairo on his way to Mecca and gave away so much gold he single-handedly ruined the economy of Egypt (1324 AD)? Bad. Ass.
POLAND-LITHUANIA. For a while, the single most powerful state in Europe was in the east. Lithuania, the last pagan state in Europe, repeatedly flipped the bird to the invading Germanic crusaders (you probably didn’t even know there were crusades in Eastern Europe, did you?), then decided to convert to Catholicism anyway because they felt like it. Polish Winged Hussars, possibly the most iconic cavalry ever, went undefeated in every battle they fought in up until 1939. And that was against German tanks, so we’ll cut them some slack.
ARABIA AND ISLAMIC SPAIN. While most of Europe was busy killing each other and dying of disease, the Islamic world was having a Golden Age. Mathematics, philosophy, medicine, and science were all on the rise, as well as gorgeous architecture, fashion, and a collection of stories and epic tales that would make you cry. With explorers like Ibn Battuta, who kicked the shit out of near-contemporary Marco Polo in scope (and legitimacy) of his travels, and warrior-kings like Saladin, who was so badass and cool about it that even Richard the Lionhearted considered him a bro and they were fighting the Crusades, let’s be real, they were awesome.
And after that I mean you have MEDIEVAL JAPAN which is fucking badass like all the time, MEDIEVAL CHINA which holy shit man you like gunpowder and Confucianism? Yeah that’s what I thought. MEDIEVAL RUSSIA (which is technically a part of the Mongol Empire because they had their asses handed to them and only regained their independence after four hundred years of Mongol rule in the 1400s) is fun, and I feel compelled to make a comment about the TURKS and ZAPOROZHIAN COSSACK HOST, depending on how late you want to go.
Ooops, I history major’d. :B ))
((I love you right now. This is awesome. Time to do some research! :DDD))

Pauses sheepishly, and rubs the back of her head. “Sorry, I’m ramblin’ a bit. Have a tendency tah to do that, just ask Falk over there to bite me if I annoy ya too much. He’ll happily oblige.” She indicates her Deino with a wave of her hand.

(sorry its so short, and for some reason when I read Saraia I hear applejack’s voice from MLP)
((Really? Haha, I don’t even have any idea what she sounds like, I just write what I think suits her. :’DD))
Saraia laughs, not offended by the questions. “Yeah, ah can read, one of the few things mah dad managed to beat into my thick skull. Ah sure would appreciate that guide, ah have lots of plants but no idea what to do with ‘em!” She smiles happily, pleased at the idea of any information about her precious plants. “Anythin’ I can do in return? Favor fer a favor and all that. Maybe some of my plants?” Her grin widens. “Or maybe ya need a few skulls of anyone who’s been botherin’ yeh bashed in?” This last bit was said with a joking tone, though she does seem eager at the idea of a fight.
Lillia grimaces. “Er-No, I don’t need anyone… killed,” she shudders before moving on. “Some of your plants would be enough, thank you. So what kinds of herbs do you grow?”
“Oh… Oh dear. Ah’m sorry, I didn’t mean kill, just ya know, get in a friendly brawl? Ah’m sorry, ah really should be more clear when ah talk. Ah just like to fight and spar, I’d never… kill someone. Morgan doesn’t seem to acknowledge the implied command, and continues to purr as Saraia pets him.
“I think you don’t have to worry about him though,” the thief laughs, “He really seems to like you.”
“Haha, that’s good! Nothin’ wrong with a few tricks though I say, so long as they don’t cause no harm.” She smiles and continues petting the little fox. “He’s much friendlier than most o’ mine, and much more fun tah pet-none o’ mine have fur, ‘cept fer Falk, mah Deino, and he likes tah bite when he’s cranky. Which is often. Little bugger.” She laughs good-naturedly, obviously not minding the whole biting problem too much. She glances down at the purring Zorua. “He sure is friendly. Are the rest of yer Pokemon as outgoing as he is?”
“Isa is, though she tends to be a little staticky sometimes so she’s not as enjoyable to pet,” Vic says, shrugging, “Typical Joltik thing, I guess. Atlas is much quieter. Until get gets upset, that is. Then you’d best be out of his way.”
Saraia laughs. "Heh, Atlas sounds a bit like Brute-you sure don't want to be 'round her when she's angry either!" She chuckles again, then looks up at the sky."Huh. Gettin' a bit later than I thought."
She gives Morgan a final scratch behind the ears, then stands. "Ah'd better get goin'- ah have tah train for the test the warriors have to go through. Some crazy person decided it would be a good idea tah have us fight a Pokemon one on one." She sighs, then goes back to smiling. "It sure was nice meetin' yeh and Morgan. Just swing on by if yeh ever feel like chattin' -ah might even have some berries yer Pokemon might like growing in mah room." She grins. "Nothin' healthier fer a Pokemon than fresh-picked berries ah always say." She realizes she is rambling yet again, and offers a hand to shake. "See yeh around, a'right?"
askadrianyventreur replied to your photoset: “Morgan would love to answer your question, but…
Adam: “cheer up kid, it just means you’re good at hiding it.”
(grumble grumble grumble)
((Don't be angry Morgan-You're the MANLIEST ZORUA EVERR!!))
((sorry for such a late reply, I was at school DDDDD’))
Saraia smiles and strokes the fox’s head, admiring his soft fur. “Nice to meet you little guy.” She glances up at Vic. “Ah’m just tellin’ the truth, he really is adorable. Ah’ve always liked ‘em, maybe ah’ll find one someday.” She laughs. “Ah’ve heard they like playin’ tricks though with them illusions of theirs though. This one ever caused yeh any trouble?”
