XIAOLI SHAN:

xiaoli wasn’t sure if she wanted adventure, per say. she just found the idea of cars interesting, and they looked pretty good, too. that was a plus. hearing the boy’s name ( nickname? it had to be a nickname, she was almost certain ), she was sure he was one of the sugar rush people sabrina had mentioned during class one time. ‘i’m xiaoli. are you sure that would be alright? you don’t know me, and i wouldn’t want to inconvenience you.’

Sour Patch looked over the words and flashed a bright smile. “Well, how else am I supposed to get to know you if I don’t invite you to do something with me?” he asked. However, he quickly faltered, thinking that the questions meant that she didn’t want to. “I totally understand if you don’t want to, though. You might have prior engagements and just stopped to look— It was a bit silly of me to suggest that.” He gave a sheepish laugh before looking down. “You just looked so interested in them and you’d learn much more if you were actually in one and such.”

【 NOW THE ROAD IS A MINEFIELD.】

sour patch doesn’t have many talents. but, he can sing. boy, can that little candy sing. however, the boy was so insecure that he never tried singing for an audience, just for his fellow castle helpers. some would argue that sour patch’s talent was helping people. he wasn’t strong or fast, but he gave support when he could. he had the patience to stick things out with you until the very end. he had the thoughtfulness to get you small gifts. he had the determination to celebrate you in the best ways a small little candy could. sour patch didn’t have many talents but he was the best little castle helper that a candyland could ask for.

a lot of people were surprised when sour patch turned out as sweet as he did. after all, he was a sour candy. he ought to be sour and grumpy and groggy because that’s how sour bill was. despite this, people still adored the small boy for his bright smile and amethyst eyes. there’s something in those eyes that everyone knew was there, however. the boy sometimes got unconditionally sad, making himself sticky from his own tears. no one could figure out why. until one day, a lollipop heard sour patch cry about not being important enough. 

he was just a little candy. just a castle helper, even if he was an incredibly good one. he was just a side character. no one outside the game cared about him because no one outside the game ever saw him. that’s how unimportant he was. his dad would always choose his job over him. his mom was a minigame worker, so she often wasn’t even in the castle and was exhausted by the time she came home. sour patch cried because no matter how much people told him otherwise, he always felt like he could easily be left behind and no one would bat an eyelash. he was easily replaceable, all you need to know is a little code.

XIAOLI SHAN:

out of the corner of her eye, xiaoli spotted someone waving at her, and she quickly stepped away from the cars. it was embarrassing to have been spotted. she’d been under the impression that there wasn’t anyone else in the parking lot. she must have looked ridiculous, and yet here he was, telling her that she could take a look. part of her wondered if she should trust him, but he didn’t seem to be a threat. she stepped forward and took a look. it was a very nice car. ‘i didn’t mean to pry,’ she wrote, still analysing the car as she did. ‘i’ve just been a little curious about cars since arriving here. driving seems convenient.’ and perhaps a little fun.

Sour Patch thought that the writing was... peculiar. Though, he didn’t question it. He was sure he saw a girl walking around with two eels floating in water bubbles, so a girl who only wrote wasn’t all too questionable. He smiled again as he read the words. “Driving is convenient, definitely. I could go any adventure I want at a whim’s notice!” he chirped. The girl must’ve been from the Isle, he figured, since she arrived to place with barely any knowledge of cars. “My name’s Sour Patch. And, uh— if you want, I could take you for a spin? Show you how things work? I’d like to think I’m a pretty good driver.”

if there was one thing xiaoli was completely clueless about, it was cars. she’d been in one on the way to auradon, and that one time had been enough to stir some sort of curiosity within her. she didn’t understand illyria and bolin’s aversion to them. or rather, she did, but she just didn’t feel the same way. if it was dangerous, then she wanted to overcome said danger. that was what she’d done her whole life.

that was why she’d stopped to look at the cars near the university, astounded to see so many in all different shapes and sizes. she walked around the parking lot, tilting her head every so often when she wanted to get a better look of something.

Ever since starting his driver’s ed earlier in the year, Sour Patch had gotten significantly better at driving. So much that when he got his license, Sour Bill managed to give him his own code-created car! It was part of his birthday present, even if he had gotten it much earlier than his actual birthday. He was a bit surprised when he saw a girl checking out all the cars in the parking lot. He watched her tilt her head. Curiously, he waved towards her, flashing a bright smile, before motioning to the nearest car to her. “That one’s mine!” he said. He unlocked it with his fob key, the click of the lock distinct. The royal blue car had a glistening sheen on the paint that almost made it look purple when the light hit it at a certain angle. “You can take a closer look at it if you want!”

“But the struggles is what’s bothering me the most!” Sour Patch whined. Still, as Kirsa held out her arms, he strode over. He turned around, sitting himself down so that one of her arms wrapped around his shoulders and his legs draped over her lap. “Oh hey! Remember bearded Sailor Moon from that night? I’m still friends with him! He sneaks me into clubs when we want to go raving.”

LENOX DAAE:

Lenox didn’t even realize that today was his birthday until his phone chimed. Nothing could put him into an even more sour mood than his birthday. He woke up at eleven and crawled out of his bed. He needed coffee ao much coffee. He didn’t even bother to change out of his pajamas, sliding on a pair of sneakers and slamming his dorm room door shut. His hair was a mangled mess atop his head. Lenox was shuffling down the hallway when he heard the guitar. “Could you not?” He further mussed his hair up. “It’s just a day. Who actually gives a shit about birthdays? Some of us don’t celebrate their birthdays.”

One sour attitude wasn’t going to deter his happy mood. It was his special day! He could be as unapologetically happy as he wanted. He didn’t need anyone else telling him what to do. “Quite surprisingly, a lot of people care about their birthdays. It’s kind of how they rose to prominence,” he chimed cheerily. He plucked a few guitar strings, a small tune absently filling the air. “It might be just a day to you but it’s a very special day to me. Just because it rains on one place doesn’t mean it rains EVERYWHERE. You’re allowed to be as grumpy and sour as you want, and I’m allowed to be as happy and as sweet as I want! That’s how the world works! I’ll remember not to play around you if that’s what’s bothering you, though!”

SABRINA CANDY:

sabrina had done some digging a little while ago. hacking was the better term for it, but she wasn’t about to admit as much with any teachers about. all she’d done was look up the birthdays of all her friends, at least the ones she didn’t know, so she would be prepared with gifts for them whenever those dates rolled around. now she was at the university, searching for sour patch so she could give him his gift, though she doubted it was anything special. hearing the birthday tune, she rushed towards it, joining in at the end with a, “HIP-HIP, HOORAY!” she slid to a stop in front of him, a bright grin on her face. “happy birthday!”

Sour Patch wasn’t expecting the additional voice and he let out a surprised laugh. When he realized it was Sabrina, he wore such a bright smile. He was sure someone could’ve seen it a mile away. “Sabrina! Thank you, thank you!” he exclaimed happily. He stopped playing, letting the guitar rest with its strap so he could clap. “How are you? Can I play a song for you? It’s what I’ve been doing for my birthday. I lacked ideas and I figured playing songs is always fun so here we are!”

ADELAIDE LOVAT:

Addie took notice of how he backed away from her and had to laugh. “Look I’m not gonna hit you with it, if that’s what you’re thinking.” she assured him with a laugh. He looked as though that was the last thing he needed. She flicked her curls over shoulder before responding to his next question. “I would like to think so, yes.” 

“I mean... it wasn’t NOT on my mind?” he said with uncertainty. He sheepishly smiled, bringing the back of his hand to cover it. “It’s just... why else do you carry a baseball bat if not to intimidate people?” He tilted his head to the side before brightening. “That’s good! I’m not good at any sports, really. I’m good at helping out, though. I’m Sour Patch.”

“Of course I do.” Ginger told him positively. “There’s nothing wrong with that at all, it just means that you have a big heart.” she pointed out. “Sometimes people like to take advantage of other’s kindness and the only one’s to blame are them not you.” she promised, gently laying a hand on his shoulder. 

“I’m just a little candy, though, I’m too small for a big heart,” Sour Path murmured with a pout. He wasn’t all that good with handling so many emotions at once, especially considering that as a candy, he only had room in his tiny body for one at a time. “Being sad isn’t something I’m used to feeling, Gingy... I haven’t been this sad in a long time... and never for so long.”

HERSHEY VON SCHWEETZ:

“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” He glitched a little (still dealing with Ursula’s after-effects) but he ignored it .Hershey lifted his hand like a stop sign, then lowered it on to Sour Patch’s shoulder. “I think in my old-age I mistakenly heard you say you’re ‘just a castle worker’…? Sour Patch? Patch that is Sour? You’re practically my brother and no brother of mine is just a castle worker. You’re…” he paused, knowing he had to resolve this before they got into any mischief, “you’re a lord. Lord of Sour Sweets.”

Sour Patch shifted uncomfortably. He didn’t realize there was so much weight to such an offhand comment. He hadn’t really meant it badly. He was just stating a fact— Hershey was a prince, born from a queen, and Sour Patch was a castle worker, born from another castle worker. That was one thing in his life he didn’t need sugar coating for. “I think you’re missing the bigger point here,” Sour Patch said, then offered a bright smile, “I’m trying to not get you into any trouble. What kind of royal assistant would I be if I didn’t at least try?”

“Happy birthday to me!” Sour Patch sang, carrying his guitar around campus. Before, Sour Bill conducted every single aspect of his birthday, to the party and the cake to who was invited. Every single time, it made the candy feel like the most important person in the world (if not, the most important to Sour Bill). He got a letter from his papa, and then decided to take matters into his own hands. He decided to share his happiness by playing music to the students. He played songs on request, provided background music to a few games and adorable confessions, but during the time where he’d be looking for people to sing to, he sang ‘happy birthday’ to himself. “Happy birthday, dear Sour Patch~ Happy birthday to me!”

My reputation can be ruined as much as need be, I’m just a castle worker. You, on the other hand... might want to keep a closer eye on it.”

SIMON GILLBERT:

Simon hesitated to take the marker from him. He stared down at it almost absentmindedly. He looked up for a moment  before nodding. “That sounds like something my pa would say.” he replied softly. He hesitated a moment before deciding to sing it like he was requested to. 

“I’m..I’m really sorry about what happened. I know you probably will never forgive me, but I really am.” he confessed, a quiver in his voice as he spoke. 

“If you haven’t already noticed...” Sour Patch started. A part of him hesitated, knowing that he stiffened as the other started to sign on his cast. The boy didn’t care if that was his body’s reaction. “I’ve already forgiven you!” He flashed a soft smile. “You don’t have to apologize. But I’ll accept your apology if it makes you feel better.”

The small candy looked down as he tried to think about how he could word this properly. “Where I’m from, there are a lot of bad guys because that’s how they were made to be. But just because they’re scary, or big, or have a lot of teeth, it doesn’t mean that they’re actually BAD. A lot of them are nice and wholesome people! They’re just made to be a certain way but people still love them, anyway!”

KITKET VON SCHWEETZ:

kitket listened as sour patch spoke, and she couldn’t help but sniffle a bit — she felt the exact same way. pulling down her sweater sleeves ( even despite the hot, summer weather ), the candy princess nodded. “yeah, me too …” her voice was soft, sad. “i’m tired of trying to escape, patchy … i just don’t know how to anymore …”

If Sour Patch didn’t notice her sweater, he would’ve been a bad castle’s assistant. He knew something was up. However, he knew better than to try to squeeze it out of her. If she ever told, she would when she was ready. As soft as his expression was, he gulped out of hesitation. “I used to escape through drinking. It was pretty easy but...” He looked down at his boot cast. “I can’t right now. And if I start up again, I’m scared that I won’t ever stop.” He sighed then looked towards KitKet, scooting himself closer to her so that he could wrap an arm around her. “We’ll find a way. Either to escape or to make it so we don’t have to.”
