Julie Andrews in Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1957)
Julie Andrews and Jon Cypher in Cinderella (1957)
Did you know that the 1997 'Cinderella' starring Brandy is based not on an original Broadway show but a TV special starring Julie Andrews? In 1957 the famous Rogers and Hammerstein brought a brand new musical live to homes across America. Whilst the original was broadcast in colour to those who had a colour television on the east coast, only a low quality black and white copy remains. These colour images make me pine for what was lost - Julie's performance is stunning and I think it would have been a classic for the ages if it existed in a more accessible resolution.

Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (1957)
Why should a fellow want a girl like her a frail and fluffy beauty why can't a fellow ever once prefer a solid girl like me
She's a frothy little bubble with a flimsy kind of charm and with very little trouble I could break her little arm
Oh, oh why would a fellow want a girl like her so obviously unusual why can't a fellow ever once prefer a usual girl like me

Brandy as Cinderella in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997)
The iconic music from Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella destined it for fame. Written for television, it first hit screens in 1957 in a version starring a very young Julie Andrews. It was a smash hit leading to a successful 1965 remake starring the famous Ginger Rogers as the queen, a baton then passed to the inimitable Whoopi Goldberg in 1997 when the version best known today was released. Do you think we're due a new one? Or would that be... impossible...
