Being unaccepted by the people that mean the most to you is heartbreaking. Parents are a person’s first love, and the moments when they talk about how sad they are that your not the person they wanted you to be hurts. Our values and definitions of relationship comes from family. When your family loves you unconditionally, and then suddenly pushes you away for going against their idea of a perfect life, it can bring on a pure guilt that can’t be shaken. Parents want their children to be perfect because it’s a way to show the world this sort of reflection of themselves that they influenced. God tells us that we are not of our mother, nor of our father, and not even of our own. God tells us that to gain, we need to lose, and to be first, we need to be last. It is not a valid judgement if it’s from someone who has not been in the same position, because they lack understanding. And if that person was in the same situation with the same life battles, wouldn’t they feel too humble to judge it?? It is hard to respect parents that break your heart, don’t accept the type of path you’ve chosen, and then pridefully demand that respect at the same time. It is hard, but that is the kind of suffering Jesus is talking about. One that is blameless, humbling, and life changing. One where even though you feel unfairly treated, you push through it without complaint. This is the type of suffering that makes you rely on the comfort of God; and by loosening the hold of the traditions, things, and people that you’ve always relied on, you open a door of opportunity that lets Jesus take control. Suffering DOES make us stronger. What I am writing about was not taught to me by someone nor did I read it somewhere. I just gained understanding. I tried not to let the sadness overcome me, I tried not to feel sorry for myself, I tried not to fall into the depression trap, because I know that’s how the devil wins. One of the Devil’s greatest ways to win is pride. Pride in the church, pride in our parents, and pride in ourselves. When we all have pride, we all lose understanding. That is why those who think they know the most, know the least. God knows what is in everyone’s heart. Would you be willing to sacrifice your reputation of being a good person if it means saving someone from hell? Would you be willing to tell your parents the truth about yourself have their disappointment constantly hanging over your head? If I were to to keep lying about falling in love with a woman, or if a man were to hide being in love with another man, would that be pleasing in the eyes of the Lord? Is lying for a good reputation and to easily gain respect from people a righteous decision, or is it a prideful one? I believe that God was, is, and will always will be. We are on the earth for a short time, in which God knows will most definitely not be perfect. I wish I wasn’t rejected and treated differently, of course, but I also understand that if I’m going to go through this difficult situation that billions of other people go through, I mind as well take the good out of it, which is not giving up and taking advantage of this humble life that God has blessed me with.
