The Basic Principles and Areas of Application of Ultrasonic Testing
The use of different kinds of NDT technologies in all level of construction and engineering works in Malaysia is getting huge acceptance. Non-destructive testing techniques can detect different types of flaws and each technique has their own advantages and usefulness. For effectively detecting differences in material characteristics and discontinuities, NDT techniques are irreplaceable.
Among all other non-destructive testing techniques, Ultrasonic Testing is becoming really popular testing method. Consists of different functional units like transducer, display devices, receiver and pulser.
The Principles of Ultrasonic Testing
It is an NDT technique in which beams of high frequency sound waves that are introduced into the material being tested are used to detect surface and sub-surface flaws. When there is a discontinuity (such as a crack) in the wave path, part of the energy will be reflected back from the flaw surface. The reflected beam is detected and analyzed to define the presence and location of flaws. The proper wavelength depends on the material type, material crystalline structure and probable defect shapes and sizes.
Flaws that can be detected using Ultrasonic Testing-
Shrinkage
Flakes
Cracks
Bonding Faults
Cavities
Pores
Laminations
Discontinuities
The applications of Ultrasonic Testing-
The area effective for the ultrasonic test is called the "sound beam" which is characteristic for the applied probe and material in which sound waves propagate. Every probe has a certain directive and cover a certain section of the test object. Ultrasonic Testing is widely used in different industries:
I. Military and defence sector II. Aerospace industries III. Offshore industries IV. Marine industries
During the Ultrasonic testing procedure, detailed images of the flaws can be detected with automated system that helps to get instantaneous results. In the view of the professionals of NDT technology in Malaysia, this NDT technique saves a huge amount of time and helps to complete a project on-time. The equipment used in this technique are portable and highly automated with the minimal part preparation.
