One tried and true way to diminish the power of a song, especially when it’s written by a woman, is to focus too finely on who it is “about.” And while Mitchell never tried to disguise the handful of famous ex-lovers and musicians who populate “Blue,” the context surrounding the album is merely a surface concern, distracting from the achievement of its song-craft and the oceanic force of its emotions. As James Taylor — romantically involved with Mitchell during parts of this album’s composition, and a guitarist on four “Blue” songs — told me over the phone, songs “sort of follow their own truth, which can be bent.”

My memory of The Birdcage (1996) is always that it's more dated and more difficult to watch than it actually is. You hear "drag-themed comedy from the 90s based on a musical from the 80s based on a play from the 70s" and you brace yourself just a little, right? But the film has a strong gay perspective, so the fruity fag jokes mostly come off as warmly affectionate. There is a surprising amount of poignancy in Robin Williams' portrayal of Armand, grudgingly agreeing to his beloved son's request that he go back into the closet for an evening ("do me a favor and don't talk to me for a while"). The drag club's staff attempting to redecorate the apartment with stuff straight people might like (a taxidermy moose head, an enormous crucifix, and Playboy magazine) is extremely funny. Albert's histrionics are a point of tension because he does often come off as a stereotypically pathetic/comic figure, but towards the end of the movie he makes it very clear that he's aware of how people see him, and asserts that trying to copy a stoic masculinity he doesn't possess for the sake of social approval would be more pathetic. In the 1983 musical adaptation, they give "Albert" (Albin) the only good song in the whole show, "I Am What I Am", which Gloria Gaynor covered to the delight of gays everywhere. Apparently Nathan Lane wasn't (publicly) out yet in 1996, which is amazing because it means that at one point in this movie you're watching a gay man playing a straight man playing a gay man playing a straight man, in a movie about how it's important to be yourself, an absurdity that does seem to encapsulate the state of gay America in the 90s.

Karlie and Este went to the Jay-Z concert at Yankee Stadium together on Sunday night (July 12) in New York City.

so taylor went on stephen colbert on december 10, 2025. she was asked if she listened to audiobooks, and she said yes, constantly. then she says:

taylor: so it’s always a different one, as soon as I finish one, I start a new but I’ll tell you the elements. Is it ok if I just -- the elements of what I’m looking for is like, you know, all the elements of like Daphne du Maurier, “Rebecca,” that book? Right, so if it’s like if you’ve got like an old rambling shambles old British mansion covered in moss or ivy, and there’s like a mysterious relationship, and he may not be what he seems, and there’s like a murder that has happened in the past, but you hear whispers of it. There’s the idea of a ghost or an actual ghost. If you present me with a plot line where there’s like a family compound on an island off the coast of Maine, there’s secrets in this family, right? This brother, like, what’s going on with him? Why don’t we know where he’s been for 10 years? Why did he just show up? Do you know what I mean? If there’s a marriage and the marriage isn’t what it seems, and it seems like this dude is like clearly like why are you with him? He’s horrible to you. Oh, plot, twist, unreliable narrator… SHE’S the psycho.

yes we been knew she likes to force people to question her narratives, but it's interesting to think about now, given the events of july 3rd. the idea of a relationship that may not "be as it seems", and something that you "hear whispers of" but what really happened is never confirmed. and there's someone, "a brother", that's been away for 10 years (kk), and now he just shows up? everyone is wondering why because it throws off what the reader/public thinks they know.

she says "there's a marriage and the marriage isn't what it seems," and everyone is questioning why she's with this person. OH plot twist, SHE'S the unreliable narrator -- which is something I think she loves being for many reasons and obviously she knows how to make a clip that people will point to in the future. all with a straight face.

if you think about it in terms of storytelling, she's a masterful painter, and i can't wait for her to 'finish' (it will never be completely done) this masterpiece.
