I honestly wish more people knew how evil Silicon Valley is–and people like Zuckerberg are affiliated with companies in it. They’re always hailed as the “progressive” type industry in comparison to others but they’ve got a lot more power over citizens and government, and that’s not a good thing.
Of course, when motivated by profit they also do the following (from this post by fullmarx):
Conflict minerals are used in almost all technological goods. These include cobalt, mined by Chinese-state owned mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo which use child- and slave-labour, and wolframite, which is mined in conflict areas in Colombia.
Third-world factories with atrocious working conditions such as Apple Inc.’s Foxconn factory use these minerals to create consumer goods for consumer markets. Foxconn became notorious several years ago due to its spate of worker suicides - management’s response was to install nets to prevent employees throwing themselves from the roof.
These technologies are often used to facilitate atomisation and managerial dictatorship - the so-called ‘gig economy’, which now employs as many as 3 in 10 Americans, is becoming well known as an industry which promotes low wages, harrassment and punitive penalties via its app-based employee front-end.
Profit-orientated low build quality results in planned obsolescence - even shiny new technologies like the Apple Watch are designed to be replaced to squeeze greater profits from consumers.
This means vast quantities of highly toxic waste are generated in a super-intensified rush for profit. Unscrupulous gangs with criminal connections in Hong Kong have been illegally disposing of unknown quantities of ‘e-waste’ from Western consumer markets near homes and in protected areas, with Chinese and US governments paralysed in a war of words to avoid responsibility. Dumps like Agbogbloshie, a former wetland in Ghana, have become sprawling ‘computer graveyards’ which simply defy description.
So the idea that tech companies are more progressive in comparison to others needs to stop. These people shouldn’t even be considered for political office. Yes, none of them, not even the Facebook guy. Would anyone want to elect the CEO of Nestle? Knowing what the company does overseas, probably not. But Silicon Valley is no different.
