hello, folks. sorry i’ve been utterly mia. funeral arrangements have been a nightmare overall and i havent picked up a pen for art or for writing in god knows how long. swear to the heavens i tried to force out an excerpt or two last night and i just couldn’t get through it. the wind is totally out of my sails and i seriously wish i could continue some of my threads here. regardless, i’m wishing you all the best. i hope i can come back soon. i really miss cain.
i have been struggling to put together how to phrase this post, but unfortunately things have gotten quite bad on my end of things (funerals and all those deathly matters) and i am afraid i will be taking quite a long hiatus until i can find the energy to create again. in addition, i apologize for the long and unexplained absence these past two weeks; it is very hard to find the energy to do anything these days.
hopefully i will be back with better news someday. this hiatus is indefinite and may be interrupted by some very (and i mean very) scarce replies. thank you for your time. i wish you all the best.

That was reasonable. Assuming he was being told the truth of where the dangers of the four legged hunters were commonly found. There wasn't a reason to not believe him yet .. and he'd be ever on the look out for the tracks in the snow. He knew rivers, lakes, and oceans better than the woods.. but this landscape neither was entirely unfamiliar either.
Not seen. Possibly tracked though. Will's expression doesn't change in spite of hearing this. Was this good news or bad news? Somehow it felt like both and instead of finding some kind of relief he may be closing in, what's felt instead is dread. "It is of interest." He admits. Hannibal wouldn't be in a grand shape either.. though it's entirely possible he's better off being more physically fit and Will may've broken his fall when they plummeted down, down, down.
Will focuses on the man's movements - how he grounded his legs, the way his fingers curled around the tool, how his voice just barely had a hint of hesitation. Not fond of eye contact, either. A kindred spirit on a surface level without digging in any deeper. Will doesn't grant that same instinct to himself though ; every motion is under a microscope than avoided. Rather see too much than too little, too late.
"Considering I'm short of a vehicle-" too easy to track, too easy to be found by people he didn't want finding him ( and he was tired, oh so tired ) ".. I'll have to accept the offer." It was closest to the tracks and furthest from anyone who may wonder where Will Graham disappeared to after he signs himself out of the hospital when no one was watching.
The crack and thud did indeed remind him of broken bones and falling bodies. It reminded him of his own, just as the biting pain of winter sank her teeth into his damaged leg.
There's resentment for still being alive. He can't die just yet.
"My name is Will Graham."
It's the first time Will looks away from the man, despite still watching him from the corner of his vision. There's a discomfort around his name, a stigma he knows is attached to it for anyone who watched the news or read the papers only a few years ago.
Something flickers in Cain's hollow eyes, though distant as they are, it may as well have been a trick of the light. Instead, he continues chopping away at his pile of logs, the axe hefted over his shoulder with near-mechanical cadence and precision. He seemed used to cutting things harder than wood; calloused fingers gripping the handle with an odd carelessness that risked its sudden leave from his palms at every swing.
"Cain."
Perhaps it was both a blessing and a curse that he was who he was, deprived of the burden of memory. For all he knew, he was dead. That included everything he should've known, could've known, would've known. But whether he clung to the few aspects of those shoulds, coulds, and woulds that may have rendered him safer in this situation?
Cain lets the head of the axe drop with a thud into the dirt as he hefts the final log onto his chopping trunk, grunting to himself in some feigned absentmindedness.
"Leave your baggage on the porch," he spoke as he split the last pieces of firewood in two. "n' help me carry this to the wood shed."
For all he knew, he was in no position to judge Will Graham.

Will doesn't answer right away. Yes, he did have whiskey on him. He'd been reunited with an old friend that aided him in prior trying times. Haunting memories and thoughts alike were always waiting for him when he slept except when he chased them away with a bottle. His eyes flicker down to his left hand. A wedding band still wrapped around the proper finger. Will drank to forget but that now came with remembering Molly. There was no Molly to sober him up and help him reclaim his life this time.
Did Cain smell the whiskey on him?
"I do," he reaches into his thick coat and retrieves a flask half-empty. It's handed over, relaxing further back in his chair once it's grabbed from his hand. Molly hated his drinking. Met him when he was at his worst with it ; the only thing he wanted to care about was his dogs, boats he was fixing, and the next bottle that'd go down. The man who collected strays turned into a stray that was taken in and patched up. Eyes lazily wander around the area of the house.. dogs and all. What was the likelihood he'd be dead in the snow if not for Cain allowing refuge? The more things changed, the more they truly stayed the same.
At least Cain and his dogs showed little to no curiosity about Will and his current state. Going into the public earned him more stares than ever before. A gash on ones face does little to blend in. Speaking of..
"Unless you have another stash, that's the second to last bottle." One of them would have to wander into town for more.
"Second to last," he muses in a tone one step short of a snort. "So you travel light. But not without booze."
If Cain was busy judging him for his tastes or bizarre journeying choices, it wasn't very clear; instead, he gratefully accepted the flask, taking one sniff of it and pouring a modest helping into his metal mug. After he seemed content with the distribution of liquor and coffee, he handed it back to Will, making a vague noise half between a grunt and a hum of thanks as he took a seat at the table.
Soon came silence permeated only by the faint rattling of a steel spoon against his cup whilst he lazily stirred away with one hand, the other resting at his chin as he observed the snowfall outside the window. It was oddly tranquil; the crackling of the pot-belly stove, the faint snoring of the hounds lounging about the cabin, and the limping cadence of Cain stirring away with his spoon and unholy concoction of maple-infused caffeine. Every now and then, the metal would scrape against metal a bit too jarringly that one of the dogs' ears would perk up or twitch, though they'd settle back into their slumber with little to no quarrel; and then it'd repeat all over again.
"A scarf would do you good," he suddenly says out of nowhere, as if struck by genius. The rattling continues for a moment more before he stops, lifts the spoon, then taps off the excess droplets, setting it aside methodically upon a napkin. "If you would like to see Grey Pine, that is."
Oddly enough, Cain--throughout their time together--had never asked once how Will managed to stumble across his relatively desolate and rural cabin without a vehicle or mode of transport. For all he knew, Will might've been a ghost or some mountain ghoul he'd let into his house; but that was what shotguns were for.
"Though, you don't seem the sort to enjoy merry company as the folk there, even if I lend you my name."
[ fun fact ] — cain was originally named camille, after camille from polar 2019. i ended up changing it because i didn’t want him to get confused with… well, the actual character he was named after lol. the cabin he lives in is very much camille’s though! it’s the same one that will stays in as well, which i always found quite silly. it’s like cain was waiting to be made with all of those cards in place..
