This older man moved my skirt aside and I absent-mindedly said "oh sorry" for being partially in his seat and he said "dont be sorry, this is new york" and then showed me all his poetry about observing the world and living as a restaurant worker during the pandemic and we talked about how i worked in a grocery store and as a bartender so i resonated with his work and he told me "i may never meet you again but it's nice to meet someone worth talking to. I might sound like a world class idiot sage, but you can't be afraid. That's no way to live. You have to trust your humanity." Then he shook my hand and got off the stop before me. Hello. Hello . Hello.

it makes me wince, wishing for something this simple. as effortless as “how are you?” as easy as knowing the difference between my boyfriend and my best friend’s first names. shaping a question mark into something you could care about. sometimes, the first people to teach you to beg are the same to bring you into the world. mornings, all grown up and flossing over-apology from your teeth; finding you’ve still missed a spot. I don’t want where I come from to set the stage for being shocked by every gesture of kindness. it’s not asking too much to matter. if blood runs thicker than water, may you find me sitting by the creek, thanking the wells; singing praises to the fresh springs that never run dry.
