I would like to emphasize that I agree with all of these tags by the way. My post wasn't aiming to pin all of Europe's grotesque racism on the new elections.

A few weeks ago I was at a board game night with some of my old classmates from various mainland European countries. They started talking about how horrible Trump's treatment of immigrants is and how they're so glad to be in Europe where nothing like that is happening right now. I asked them what they thought about the fact that their own governments were complicit in turning the Mediterranean into a mass grave of asylum seekers, and some of them legitimately didn't even know and were surprised to hear that their own governments had enacted policies that caused the deaths of thousands of asylum seekers.

Even here in Iceland, almost nobody has been talking about the fact that some of the far right populist parties have legitimately been talking about wanting to establish detainment camps to keep asylum seekers in.

The descent into the devastating and inescapable logic of “Why We Build the Wall” throughout the song will never not haunt me.

Why do we build the wall? We build the wall to keep us free. How does the wall keep us free? The wall keeps out the enemy. What do we call the enemy? The enemy is poverty. What do we have that they should want? We have a wall to work upon.

Like the show itself, the logic of the wall is cyclical, so it’s inescapable. The wall is literal. The wall is figurative. We create the wall ourselves when we value profit over life. And at the end of the day, after all that work, and all of that time spent disparaging the “have nots,” the only thing you have left is the very wall you are building, separating you from your fellow man.

I appreciate how Hadestown is a mix of messages. There are so many lessons to be learned from this show, and I feel like I have learned a different one each time I saw it.

It starts as a story about love. About trust and working together and relationships. A relationship will die if one person is the only one working on it, no matter how much you love the other person. You cannot just share the good times and make empty promises. Relationships require work, especially during the hard times. That is how relationships grow and become stronger and more meaningful. You also have to trust your partner, again, especially during the bad times. Both Hades and Orpheus were in positions where they could not get the affirmations they needed from their partners during the bad times, and we see how that turned out. Lack of trust can lead to bitter resentment and doubt, which are relationship killers.

It is also a story about poverty, abuse, and the strength of community. We live in a world where we are trapped by rising prices and low paying jobs that treat us like machines instead of people. But it's just as Orpheus says, we are many and they are few. It is not for the few to tell the many what is true. And it's true that at first it is hard. We may want to keep our heads low and keep our fellow people "safe", (I really enjoy the "Keep your head low if you want to keep your head" line, because I think that speaks more about how Hadestown works than what we are shown) but nothing will change if we don't stand up for ourselves and each other.

I especially love the message about trying again. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice will never end differently. It shouldn't end differently. But at the end of the day, it's a story. We do not live in a story. We live in a place where we can say, let's sing it again - maybe a little differently this time - and hope it turns out this time. We can learn from our previous mistakes and try again. And try again. And again, and again. Eventually, it will turn out. You just have to be willing to see how the world could be, in spite of the way that it is.

also this hadestown proshot is what made me realize that hades literally built all that stuff in hadestown FOR PERSEPHONE SO SHE'D WANT TO STAY like SHE'S the reason he made it artificially hot and bright!! he's trying to mimic summer so she doesn't leave!! how did I not realize this before????

ALSO i knew the reason orpheus could finish the song was because he finally understood the fear and doubt hades has every time persephone leaves BUT I DIDNT REALIZE THAT THE TRIAL HADES GIVES WAS ALSO BECAUSE HE UNDERSTOOD ORPHEUS AS WELL!! like hades knew he'd fail because HE'D fail!!

also also I know there's a Thing between hades and eurydice but I didn't realize that there was also one between persephone and orpheus until now, and I think it's intended to show that they're foils of one another, that pre-seasons hades was more like orpheus and pre-seasons persephone was more like eurydice and that their focus on orpheus and eurydice is because they remind them of what they had (and think they lost) - the love o+e have for each other reminds them of themselves, and so hades wants to take eurydice away/lock her away and persephone wants to protect orpheus/let him escape because they're trying to prevent them repeating their own mistakes in their own ways

like the slime tutorial did not give me these revelations, all musicals need professional recordings for this reason!!

The thing about Hadestown is the line “To know how it ends. And still begin to sing it again. As if it might turn out this time” is an incredible way to describe most of life. We try because we have to believe that even when the ending is set in stone, it’s still worth trying. It’s still better to be a person who tried.
