Discord beanie post is popping off again. So I figure I should mention I've got one for sale. He has an antler on backwards, but imho that's entirely in-character for him. :D If you want him but it really bugs you can *can* fix it.

Fluttershy was his FIRST ever friend, and when his only friend started hanging out with someone else, it made him feel insecure and threatened. He lashes out because he thinks he's getting replaced. He doesn't have prior experience having friends or managing relationships at all. He gets insecure and needs to be reassured that his friends do care about him, with little regard for how he gets that reassurance, since he's a creature of chaos.

Three's a Crowd is just another example of that. He gets insecure that Twilight doesn't see him as a friend, so he feigns sick and makes her literally go to the ends of Equestria to help him, which reassures him that she cares about him. Like yeah, he acts very selfishly to get that reassurance, but it's hard to act perfect when you're the embodiment of disharmony and trying to unlearn your nature.

Discord haters also conveniently ignore the Discordant Harmony episode, where he basically comes close to just straight-up killing himself trying to become what he thinks is Fluttershy’s ideal version of him.

Like yes, he does sucky things, and he'd probably rather go back to stone than admit this—but Discord cares sooooo much about his relationships and wants to keep his friends soooo so badly. He just can’t help but self-sabotage.

Behavior is shaped through the environment and their learning history through it. So if you have no history with friendship, and if you've been in an environment that only punishes your behavior, then you're going to engage in behaviors that translate as being jealous and possessive and they need to be taught. As @leavemebetosleep says in the comments, this show originally for children, who haven't lived much yet and need to be taught this in a nurturing, reinforcing way. Discord is the same.

Imagine having everyone hate you for something that you can't control, but is still so inherently a part of you that you can't cut it out. Imagine being the ONLY one with that characteristic. And you are only ever punished for it. So why bother?

But then someone gives you a chance. Someone treats you well. Just because they can. And that has NEVER been the norm for you.

What would you do?

Discord would do whatever it took to keep it. Because he could be punished at any time and lose it all.

Yesss, exactly—and on the point of MLP being a children’s show, I think it shows a lack of basic media literacy to look at Discord’s behavior and just write him off as a weird creep. That’s the typical sentiment among people who dislike his character.

He’s thousands of years old, spent half that time as a villain and the other half turned to stone, without a single friend to his name. Then, when he does finally gain friends, he has to suppress huge parts of his nature to appease everyone. Suddenly, the idea of losing those friendships feels worse than the idea of never getting to have self-serving, free-rein fun again. And to top it off, half of those friends—and honestly, most ponies in Equestria—still aren’t entirely comfortable with him being around.

It’s like Fame and Misfortune, where everyone gets mad at Fluttershy because she keeps having to learn to stand up for herself over and over again, and she’s still not entirely confident or outspoken. Except with Discord, it’s that times ten, because acting out the way he does is so deeply ingrained in him—it’s all he’s known for eons. The further into the show you get, the more obvious it becomes how hard he’s trying to be better, and it sucks that even this long after the show ended, people still just chalk him up to being a jerk and a creep.
