"Whether someone understands it or not, these are the consequences of the political views they're espousing" is a pretty important analysis tool for online movements because quite honestly, over half of everyone engaging in politics online have no foundations for the stuff they're saying and are just saying whatever makes them feel like a member of an in-group.
If your in-group is "the left" you're very much not immune to this. In fact, trying to do left-wing politics without even trying to build a foundational political understanding is a great way to end up as a neo-nazi with a tumblr accent rather than an effective left-wing advocate.
Just a life update, for anyone who cares. Two years ago, my husband had a great job, with insurance and everything. My health improved. We scrimped and saved and bought a house...old, not in great shape, but ours. And then everything went to hell. My husband was replaced with AI. When he lost his job, we lost our insurance. Immediately thereafter, SpyBoy got sick and we maxed out our credit cards trying to save him. Jonathan got a job unloading trucks at a grocery store. We lost SpyBoy. My health got steadily worse. J's job has kept him at 39 1/2 hours a week so they wouldn't have to give him insurance. And now they've cut him back to 2 days a week. We don't have a car, so he walks over a mile to work. There are no buses here, so he's limited to work within walking distance. We lost our food stamps. I was denied for disability, again. We divided our house in half and turned the other half into a rental apartment. We are drowning in credit card debt. We have no assistance. J makes less than a thousand dollars a month. I started my Etsy business back in February. I make funny little creatures, sparkly pride merch, magnets, and more! It's doing well, for a new business with no advertising budget. But not well enough. We are desperately trying to refinance the house, but it's a 50/50 proposition at this point, because of our low income. I've been trying to keep things together, but we're going under. It is 98 degrees here, feels like 117. And we're going to have our electricity cut off next week if I can't somehow find $389. Part of my disability is poor temperature regulation. If we lose the a/c, I'm going to end up in the hospital, which we can't afford. We're only a few months from losing the house at this point and ending up homeless. Nader is a young adult. He just turned 18 this year. He's had to sacrifice all of his dreams and comforts due to the escalating genocidal occupation of Gaza by the zionist project. His house was destroyed, his education was taken from him, and he has become the sole provider for his family of 8 through fundraising on tumblr. I want you to think about that weight. To be made responsible for the survival of your whole family as a teenager, and for this to depend on getting and maintaining the attention of people in the global north every day for years.
Israel has systematically worked to disable the population, and to destroy all means for disabled people to survive. Nader's father has experienced his health conditions become increasingly severe. He has stents in the main arteries of his heart due to blocked arteries. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer and needs surgery to remove a tumor. However, medical evacuation from Gaza is extremely expensive. Coordination costs can be over $12,000 per person, and Nader's father cannot make this journey alone.
Earlier today, Nader's father had to be brought to the Intensive Care Unit at their nearest hospital. He is now on life support. The systematic destruction of Gaza's healthcare system has left 94% of hospitals destroyed, and none of the remaining 36 are able to operate at full capacity. There are medicine and medical supply shortages. In this state, healthcare bills for this care are even more expensive. Game companies hate emulation, but none of them seem to understand that a lot of us would just buy ROMs from them directly if we could. I don't want a fifth remake of Final Fantasy IV, I want to pay five bucks for the 3MB file you already made bank with thirty years ago. Nobody who wants to play something for the purpose of retro gaming is going to consider a $40 remake as the alternative option, and we're certainly not going to let the original dissappear. They're crying about opportunity cost for a product they're not even selling.
op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.
for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.
so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.

Actually, both the seat AND lid should be down when no one is actively using the toilet, because this prevents things from accidentally falling into / accidentally being dropped into the toilet. Also having the lid down when you're flushing is important because it prevents the toilet from spraying out bacteria.
