From the Enlightenment to the Dark Ages: How “new atheism” slid into the alt-right

A movement supposedly committed to science and reason has decayed into racism, misogyny and intolerance. I'm done

The “new atheist” movement emerged shortly after the 9/11 attacks with a best-selling book by Sam Harris called “The End of Faith.” This was followed by engaging tomes authored by Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and the late Christopher Hitchens, among others. Avowing to champion the values of science and reason, the movement offered a growing number of unbelievers — tired of faith-based foolishness mucking up society for the rest of us — some hope for the future. For many years I was among the new atheism movement’s greatest allies.

From the start, though, the movement had some curious quirks. Although many atheists are liberals and empirical studies link higher IQs to both liberalism and atheism, Hitchens gradually abandoned his Trotskyist political affiliations for what could, in my view, be best described as a neoconservative outlook. Indeed, he explicitly endorsed the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq, now widely seen as perhaps the greatest foreign policy blunder in American history.

There were also instances in which critiques of religion, most notably Islam, went beyond what was both intellectually warranted and strategically desirable. For example, Harris wrote in a 2004 Washington Times op-ed that “We are at war with Islam.” He added a modicum of nuance in subsequent sentences, but I know of no experts on Islamic terrorism who would ever suggest that uttering such a categorical statement in a public forum is judicious. As the terrorism scholar Will McCant noted in an interview that I conducted with him last year, there are circumstances in which certain phrases — even if true — are best not uttered, since they are unnecessarily incendiary. In what situation would claiming that the West is engaged in a civilizational clash with an entire religion actually improve the expected outcome?

Despite these peccadilloes, if that’s what they are, new atheism still had much to offer. Yet the gaffes kept on coming, to the point that no rational person could simply dismiss them as noise in the signal. For example, Harris said in 2014 that new atheism was dominated by men because it lacks the “nurturing, coherence-building extra estrogen vibe that you would want by default if you wanted to attract as many women as men.”

This resulted in an exodus of women from the movement who decided that the “new atheist” label was no longer for them. (I know of many diehard atheist women who wanted nothing to do with “new atheism,” which is a real shame.) Harris’ attempted self-exoneration didn’t help, either — it merely revealed a moral scotoma in his understanding of gender, sexism and related issues. What he should have done is, quite simply, said “I’m sorry.” These words, I have come to realize, are nowhere to be found in the new atheist lexicon.

have you ever notest the amount metaphors theist use to explain concepts about god the resurrection ext... I got to thinking why they use them so much and I realized it helped them believe. the things that were being talked about with the metaphors were real things, so by relating them it helps them feel like god is real.what are you thoughts? Am I overthinking this ?

I do think you’re right in that using metaphors to anchor some abstract idea to reality definitely allows people to relate to it more. Math problems are a good example of it, lots of the time children struggle at first to understand 3+4=7 so what do we do? We use a metaphor and turn that conceptual idea into a relatable thing (you have 3 pieces of candy and a friend gives you 4 more, how many pieces of candy do you have?).As we mature, the ideas that we anchor to reality using metaphors get larger and larger and harder to grasp without using them.Sometimes the idea of that abstract concept gets lost, or limited by, the metaphor people use for it.

And I definitely think that depending on the metaphor used, people can attach emotions or develop different feelings to that otherwise abstract concept :)

Looked into it, and it’s real. Not only that, but if you look at his twitter account, he made some more awesome tweets that day that make me really happy to be a Catholic. I’ll include screenshots and text versions of them below.

It saddens me that a #trans student cannot choose what bathrooms to use. A basic need. It’s an affront to their dignity as human beings.

And who is harmed by a #trans student using a bathroom? I’ve seen women using men’s rooms when the ladies’ rooms were full. Who is harmed?

As usual, the one who is made to suffer indignities is the one on the margins, the one seen as “other,” the one seen as “them.”

But for Jesus, there is no “other.” There is no “them.”  There is only “us.” So we must be about openness, acceptance and inclusion. #trans 

Who should stand with the marginalized, the mocked, the bullied, the confused, the outcast, the minority? The Christian should. #trans

Because Jesus did. 

His Facebook post that day says something similar:  Who should stand with the marginalized, the mocked, the bullied, the outcast, the confused, the hurt? Who should stand with the one seen as “different,” the one seen as “other,” the one seen as “them”? Who should stand with people who often stand alone? The Christian should. Because Jesus did.

I know this is not typical of atheist accounts, but I wanted to acknowledge people like this - even if you don’t agree with or follow a religion, it doesn’t mean the people in them are all awful.

There is kindness and positivity there, and it’s only through our willingness to stretch across arbitrary boundaries that we can come together as a species.

my favorite thing about the contrast between early christianity and ancient greek and roman religion is that the difference in the ways they think and talk about their gods is really similar to the difference between how dog and cat owners talk about their pets

There are two schools of thought on this:

1. Secular cultural institutions like libraries, museums, concert halls, NPOs/NGOs, etc provide a space to conduct activities that were once conducted principally in churches (ie studying/enjoying/participating in scholarship, art, music, and charity).

2. Agnostic “religions” like Utilitarian Universalism which focus more on the community aspects of religion that the theological ones.

i love arguing with religious people on the existence of god but for some reason they don't like to...wonder why 🤔

Honestly, I would love to have an open, honest, and thorough discussion with a religious person. Someone who is at least as open to the possibility that they're wrong as I am, and are willing to discuss their beliefs.If we could sit face to face, with resources available for us to look up facts, enough time, and not argue, simply discuss? I would love it. Sadly I haven't yet found a willing person to do this with.

You point out there is mythology in the Bible, apparently without being judgmental about that fact. But, in your long list of things, each of which begins with "It is a myth....," it sounds like you're using "myth" in the colloquial sense of "lie." Is that what's going on here?

Yeah I noticed that after I reblogged that list. I don't agree with their usage of the word "myth" for most of the points, however the information within the points I found relevant. I should have clarified that as I reblogged it - thanks for pointing it out.

I'm an atheist too &, I think like you, not because I know that God does not exist but because I simply lack belief. I'm not real clear on why you have this blog. You say it's because you want to be understood. I've not read every part of the blog so maybe you answer this elsewhere, but, if you feel good about leaving the faith and who you are now, you shouldn't need people to understand. So, there's more, I think: the reason you want people to understand is what? That's what I'd like to know.

I want people to understand that atheists are legitimate in their (lack of) beliefs, and that being an atheist doesn’t automatically make someone a bad person. In many countries, being an atheist is a death sentence, people are brutally killed once their lack of belief is discovered. I consider this an atrocious act, and yet rarely is it talked about - by the media or otherwise.

"Atheism is a taboo topic that only self-righteous assholes discuss." This is the general consensus from the general population of the world, with only a few notable exceptions.

I made this blog because I want people to understand that atheists are real (individually unique) people too, and do have valid reasons for their mindset, and these people, as well as their reasons, deserve respect.
