• Abducted #Estonian security officer Kohver has been exchanged in a Cold War style swap for #Russian spy Aleksei Dressen. Eston Kohver, who was sentenced in August to 15 years in a Russian prison on espionage and other charges, was exchanged for Aleksei Dressen, a former Estonian security official serving a 16-year sentence for spying for #Moscow, Russia’s FSB security service said in a statement. The swap took place on Saturday on a bridge over the Piusa river that separates #Russia’s western #Pskov region and #Estonia’s Polva county, after which Kohver was taken to Tallinn to make a statement before taking a “vacation” to be reunited with his family. • The #IslamicState in #Libya managed to penetrate an air base Friday on the outskirts of capital #Tripoli that serves as the cities only working airport. 3 members of the Special Deterrence Force (#SDF), a 700+ member #militia loyal to the internationally recognised Tripoli government, were killed defending the base from 4-8+ militants who detonated explosives and were also killed after a brief firefight with airport guards. The attack came Friday on the #Mitiga airbase, once used by the U.S. air force, marks another event in the feud between the Islamic State’s affiliate in #Libya and the Special Deterrence Force commanded by a hardline Islamist, Abd al-Rauf Kara. Kara’s force has clashed several times with IS, most notably last January when his men were the first on the scene to battle jihadists who had stormed the landmark #Corinthia #Hotel and killed 10 people as they went looking for Westerners to slaughter. A U.S. security contractor staying at the hotel was killed. Kara rarely speaks with Western journalists, the SDF leader warned that #IS in Libya is likely to grow exponentially unless order is restored to Libya quickly. He estimated that IS had about 2k+ fighters in Libya, although some of his lieutenants put the number closer to 3k+. IS can also call upon other jihadist militias such an #Ansar al-#Sharia, which U.S. officials say was behind the 2012 assault on the U.S. diplomatic compound in #Benghazi and the death of #Ambassador #Christopher #Stevens. #ISlS later claimed responsibility on Twitter for Friday’s attack, saying the operation was aimed at releasing “detained Muslims who are undergoing torture” at the facility run by the SDF. #AtlasNewsUpdateLibya

• #Saudi warplanes have killed 4+ children and 1+ women after targeting a house in a residential area in #Sanaa. Saudi warplanes also targeted a number of localities in the province several times, including Sarf dam, a military police building and Beit al-Awzari area in the Bani al-Hareth district. Similar assaults hit 12 times an educational center in the #Sawadiyah district of Yemen’s southeastern province of Bayda. They also bombarded a pipeline in the central province of Ma'rib and targeted a camp that was set up for displaced people in the Sarwah district of the same province. In the western province of Hudaydah, Saudi jets struck an air defense site in Salif and a marine base in Kamaran Island multiple times. • A top #Saudi general has been killed in the south of the country near the border with #Yemen, where he had been “defending the country,” the army has announced Sunday. #Brigadier #General Ibrahim Hamzi, deputy commander of the 8th brigade in Jazan, died from his injuries after being taken to hospital, following a gun battle, becoming the second high-ranking Saudi official to be killed on the border this weekend. A #colonel and another border guard were killed late Friday in a gun battle after a #landmine blast along the frontier with Yemen, according to the interior ministry. Several other #Saudi soldiers have also been killed since March when the kingdom formed an #Arab coalition to fight #Houthi militias in Yemen. Around 70 people have been killed in Saudi Arabia from border shelling and skirmishes since the coalitions campaign began. • #Chinese troops could soon be joining their #Russian counterparts in #Latakia and around #Syria's Western country side. According to a senior officer in the Syrian Arab Army (#SAA) that is stationed inside the coastal province of #Latakia, “the Chinese will be arriving in the coming weeks". When asked to elaborate, the officer responded that Chinese military personnel were expected to join the Russians #Marines stationed around Syria’s western countryside.
