Soulmate: a person to whom you feel an immediate connection. A connection so strong and powerful, you are drawn to them in a way you will never experience again. They are your perfect other, the missing half of you, and no love will ever compare. No matter the distance, soulmates will find their way back where they belong.

The long believed alien invasion of 2012 never occurred. Since that fated night, Mulder has searched for answers to questions, but has come up empty handed. Scully has been standing by watching brokenheartedly, as his obsession has begun to tear them apart.
A heart can only stretch so far before it shatters and the pieces left behind must be put back together. Sometimes a shattered heart (or two) needs extra care, love, time, and help.
Sometimes it needs guidance from someone who understands grief and pain. Someone who will not give up or back down. Someone who will see a broken heart and not declare it unfixable, but grab the tape, glue, or whatever it takes, to fix it and make it whole again.
Okay.... I have posted about this before, but as I’m a bit, just a small bit mind you, more savvy with Tumblr, I am going to post it again. Before I only posted the link to AO3 and not chapter by chapter, as I had no idea how to do that at all. I have figured it out and all I can say is... get ready...
I have recently had the pleasure of meeting two incredibly wonderful and supportive fellow Philes, @prichan7 and @scullybuck, and their encouragement and love for this story has filled me with such a sense of pride and happiness, I am so thankful to have met them. Ladies... your kindness means so much to me, you truly don’t know.
I am going to post the first three chapters today and then one, or sometimes a couple, the next day.. and so on.
This is my baby and the one I am the most proud of... I hope you like it.
Chapter One
The Origin of Maggie Scully
Maggie had been a romantic all her life. When she was younger, around 10, she began to read from the “grown up” section of the library, the young adults area. She was always an advanced reader and devoured books. She discovered Anne, the orphan girl adopted by a brother and sister. She learned new, big descriptive words reading about Anne.
Maggie fell in love with Gilbert, a sweet, romantic, caring boy who was “fathoms deep” in love with Anne upon first meeting. She yearned, despaired, and was elated when Anne and Gilbert were finally joined together in marriage. She read of Anne and Gilbert’s children. Of Rilla, their youngest who was in love with a family friend. He went off to war and her heart was broken. She cried and mourned along with all her beloved characters. When she finished the books, she began again. She became obsessed with the love the characters had for one another.
The words she read were poetry to her young soul. She needed more. The librarian observed how often Maggie was borrowing the same books. On one of her trips to the library, when she was 12, the librarian, a “kindred spirit,” showed Maggie to the literature section. She suggested a few new books she may find interesting and Maggie’s eyes lit up. She borrowed Emm a and Sense and Sensibility.
Oh … being lost in the stories of yearning love, hardships, misunderstandings, broken engagements, and true love realized, made her heart soar. She wished that she could live in her books, to know these characters, to attend balls and dance through the night.
She felt a thrill when she discovered the word ‘soulmate.’ A soulmate. It was a word she fell in love with immediately. She rolled it around and around in her mind. To think that there was someone out there destined for her, her other half, made her stomach do flip flops. She read when true soulmates had found each other, there was an unspoken understanding between them. They would feel unified to have finally found the one they had, wittingly or not, been searching for. They would be together in unity and no other happiness or joy could ever compare. Oh, how those words and thoughts had thrilled her, down to her very soul.
Reality came calling, however, no matter how a person may romanticize the world around her. Her father felt reading, especially books far beyond her age, was a waste of time. He found it “foolish for a girl to be doing, especially the books she was reading. Stories about love and romance filing her head full of frivolous unattainable things. A handsome man racing up on a horse to save her, or dying for one's true love.
Try as she might, there was no reasoning with her father. Her mother was a meek woman and she complied with her husband. Maggie’s trips to the library became obsolete. She was told to focus her attention on other things.
Her parents were devout Catholics and her time for confirmation was approaching. She was to attend the classes and study what her faith would prepare her for in her future- a life devoted to her faith, husband, and a family.
Although she obeyed, she felt that a part of her was gone without the chance to read her books and become lost in their stories. But after her confirmation, she began going to parties and meeting people. New girlfriends to gossip with, share lipsticks (of which none of them were allowed to even possess), even try out smoking, and laugh about which boys they would like to kiss.
She loved the thrill she felt being in a group of boys and girls, seeing if she might feel a spark with of them. She had not given up that she had a soulmate out there somewhere looking for her. There were boys she felt an attraction to, but it was not the same as that deep desire for a soulmate.
Then when Maggie was 20, her mother passed away. She was left with an empty hole in her life. Her father took her mother’s death extremely hard. He began to drink heavily. He was moody and depressed. But at times he was kind and emotional. During those times, he spoke of his love for his wife. How beautiful she had been, how she could light the room with her smile, how much he missed her, how lost he was without her, how he loved her from the moment he saw her, how he wished he told her more.
Maggie sat in shock. Of course she knew her parents loved each other, she was not stupid. But this ... especially from her father, left her speechless. He was tough, quiet, closed off. She had no idea he was capable of feeling that way. How naive she was, how childish in her thinking.
She was an adult, but she was still much like a child, believing love was something a person longs for, pines after, or has to suffer a huge loss to find. She saw and learned of true love, of actual soulmates that day. Not the silly little girl version she had imagined with music sounding and “happily ever after.” This was a love that ran deep and true and real.
She was emboldened by this revelation. She made a firm decision. She would not let her father drink the rest of his life away. Her mother’s memory did not deserve that disrespect. His love for her needed to be stronger than the ease at which he grabbed the bottle for comfort.
It was not an easy task, but she got him to quit. She learned things about herself during this time. Patience, understanding, and extreme empathy. Her grief was raw, but her father’s was devastating. Spending time with each other, expressing their grief, had brought them closer together. She always felt a disconnect from him, as though he did not care for her as her mother had. As they learned from each other, her heart warmed with the discovery that his love was simply quiet. He was proud of her, loved her, and wanted the very best for her. He did not say it with words too often, but his eyes and his smile told her every day.
When Maggie met Bill, she knew right away he was a good man. He was somewhat like her father-quiet, serious, stoic. Under his outward presentation, though, he was sweet, funny, romantic. He was rational and cool headed. He would be a good husband, provider, father.
She loved him, immensely, but it was not until she had Bill Jr. that she realized how much she needed and relied on him.
She was sick throughout her pregnancy, never truly gaining much weight. She could not get the baby to feed very well once they were home. She was not sleeping, had not showered, the house was a mess, and she could not stop crying. She felt like a failure as a wife and a mother.
One day, a knock sounded at the front door. Bill Jr. had just spit up all over her last clean shirt and also managed to soil his last clean diaper. Maggie felt like lying down and giving up. She did not care about the person at the door, she just wanted to sleep, cry, or scream. Maybe even all three.
The knock sounded again and a muffled voice called out, “Mrs. Scully? My name is Evelyn McCreary. Your husband works with my husband. He asked if I could look in on you. He wanted to be sure that you were okay and didn’t want you to be alone.”
Maggie began to cry. From exhaustion, embarrassment, but mostly from the caring her husband showed by asking for help for her. She would never have asked on her own. She was a navy wife now and needed to keep that stiff upper lip. As she cried, she caught a whiff of both herself and the baby. It was not a good combination.
Her pride worn down, she walked to the door. She did not look at her reflection in the mirror by the door. She knew she looked like death warmed over. If this woman was truly here to help, she was going to see how big her job would be.
Opening the door, she found not a young woman, but an older one. White hair set in a fetching style, clothes and makeup perfect. She even had a pair of gloves in one hand and her purse in the other. This woman? She was going to help?
Maggie almost closed the door in her face. Close the door before she ruined the clothes of this poor well meaning woman. She had probably thought that Maggie was simply bored and was looking for someone to gossip with and drink some tea, maybe something stronger. Well, Maggie thought, that sure ain’t the case. She stared at this immaculately dressed stranger with a look of defiance.
The eyes looking back at her were soft and understanding. She took in Maggie’s spit up covered shirt and could smell the baby’s soiled diaper. She smiled kindly at Maggie and put her gloves in her purse with a snap as it closed.
“Well,” she said with a square set to her shoulders. “It looks like we have our work cut out for us. How about you invite me in and we can get started?”
Maggie was completely floored. She expected this woman to be aghast and walk away. When she did neither, she could not do anything but allow her in the house. Evelyn set her purse down on the crowded dining room table and turned to Maggie.
“First things first,” she said with determination in her voice. “You need to get cleaned up and I will take care of this adorable baby.”
“No,” Maggie said with more force than she actually felt. “First things first. You tell me who you are and why exactly you are here.” Evelyn smiled at her, just as kindly as before, and clasped her hands together.
“My husband and your husband have become friends. They have recently worked together and have taken a liking to one another. Your husband mentioned that you had recently had a child. My husband, Philip, had asked how you were doing. Bill was honest with him and said it had been hard. My Philip told me, and I knew I had to come right over. You see, Mrs. Scully,” she said with a brief pause as she took a breath. “I know how hard it can be. How you can feel ... alone and no one understands. I have had six children and I was unprepared for each one of them.” Maggie balked at her. Six children? God. That sounded exhausting.
“My husband and I married young,” she continued. “My mother had passed when I was a girl and I never learned about ... well many aspects of marriage.” She laughed and her cheeks flushed. “When I discovered I was with child, I was terrified. I had no idea what I would do.” She smiled at Maggie kindly and reached out to touch the baby’s foot.
“My husband was wonderful to me the entire time. He was tickled that we would be having a baby. He boasted to everyone how happy he was to be a father. How he loved that I would be giving him that honor. But then the babies came ...” she became quiet for a second, lost in her memories. Maggie shifted uncomfortably, aware once again how terrible she smelled.
Evelyn gave a little shake of her head and then smiled at Maggie. “Mrs. Scully,” she said kindly. “I would love to tell you my story when you have had a chance to clean up a little. I can imagine you don’t feel so wonderful at this moment.”
Maggie’s eyes filled with tears at the kindness in her voice. “I can’t get cleaned up,” Maggie said with a sob. “There is so much laundry to be done, and I don’t have any more clean shirts.”
Evelyn reached for the baby, and this time Maggie let her take him. She brought her hands to her face as her tears began to fall faster. Evelyn tucked Bill Jr. into her side and drew Maggie to her with an arm around her shoulder.
“My dear,” Evelyn said softly. “Please lead me to the bedroom and we will get you sorted out.”
Maggie tearfully led Evelyn toward the bedroom. She set the baby down in the bassinet that sat in the room. Evelyn walked into the bathroom and started the shower. When it was a comfortable temperature, she turned to Maggie and told her to take her time and get cleaned up. Maggie sobbed and began to unbutton her shirt. Evelyn walked out and closed the door behind her.
Maggie left all her clothes in a disgusting heap on the floor and stepped into the warm steamy shower. She let the water wash over her and cleanse her body and soul. She was so bone tired and this shower was the best experience she had in days. She stayed under the spray and felt her muscles relax. She cried and cried. Let all her anxiety out in that shower. Felt it wash away down the drain.
She washed her hair and body twice, exhilarated by the feeling of being clean. Erasing the stench of milky baby vomit and soiled diapers. She stayed in the warm cocoon until the water began to cool. Finally she had to turn the water off and return to real life.
A towel had been placed out for her and her disgusting clothes were gone. She had not even noticed Evelyn return to the bathroom. She grabbed the towel and wrapped herself in the fluffiness. God, she felt like a new person. She dried her hair with an extra towel until it was just slightly damp.
Maggie walked into her bedroom and found that Evelyn had put some clothes on the bed for her. A button down shirt of Bill’s was laid out beside a pair of pajama pants. She slipped them on, no underwear available to be worn. She did not care and she doubted Evelyn would either.
Once she was dressed, she walked out to find Evelyn in the dining room. She had cleaned up the clutter on the table and changed the baby. He was laying in the bassinet that she had moved from the bedroom.
She looked up and smiled as Maggie came in the room. She walked toward her and put her arm around her shoulder, leading her to the table. Maggie sat and Evelyn disappeared into the kitchen. She came back with a two cups of tea and set them down.
“Do you take cream and sugar?” Evelyn asked kindly. Maggie shook her head. “I was able to find one last diaper for the baby, but he will be needing more. I placed a call to a friend of mine and she will be dropping off some items for you as soon as she can,” Evelyn said as she sat and drank her tea. “I have also started washing some clothes in your washing machine. Such a wonderful invention. Things took longer in my day. Once those clothes are done, I will hang them for you and start more clothes.”
Maggie was silently crying, looking down at her teacup. She was overwhelmed by everything, but especially by the kindness this woman was showing her. She did not know her, but she was here and she was helping. She had already done so much in the short amount of time she had been here.
She lifted her eyes to Evelyn. She could not talk around the lump in her throat. She shook her head, trying to fight back her tears. She took a deep breath and opened her mouth to speak.
“Before you say anything,” Evelyn said softly, setting down her cup and taking Maggie’s hand. “Let me tell you my story. Drink your tea and just listen.”
Maggie took another deep shuddering breath and nodded. She did not know what she was going to say anyway. That she was fine? She clearly was not. She did not need any help? It was obvious that she did. She just needed to say something. Instead she took a sip of tea and waited for Evelyn to speak.
Evelyn placed her hands on the table and folded them together. She told Maggie of her hardships with her babies. How she had been wholly unprepared for caring for them. She did not know anything about children and she felt like a failure every day. She cried more in that time than any other time in her life. When the babies cried, when they spit up, when dinner was burnt, when her husband’s shirts were not ironed, or worse, when they too were burnt.
But through it all, her husband had been there for her. He was always encouraging, always positive. He ate the burnt dinner, smiling through every bite. He hid his scorched shirts beneath jackets, kissing her goodbye and thanking her for seeing that he looked respectable and loved. He was her champion, her cheering squad and she loved him immensely for it.
They moved to a new base when she was pregnant with their fourth child. Two of the children were in school during the day at that time, so she was home with only the youngest child. She was thankful for that because the fourth pregnancy had been her worst. She was sick almost throughout. She could barely eat, she was not sleeping and the housework began to suffer.
There were not scorched shirts anymore, there were simply none ready at all. Dinners were late as they had to wait for her husband to cook them and he worked late shifts. She would cry as she sat holding the youngest one and her husband served the older children soup and toast, grilled cheese, eggs. Whatever was on hand and easy to make. He would make them laugh with silly voices and songs he made up. Then they would help him clean up and head to bed.
He would come to her and wipe her tears. Tell her he loved her, she was the only person he would ever love in this lifetime and the next. He would take the little one and bathe her, put her to bed, and come find Evelyn still on the sofa, crying. He would take her to their room, help her get her night clothes on, and brush her hair. He would sing to her as he did, telling her how beautiful she was. How her hair was like spun gold and it shined brighter than the sun. He would hold her as she cried when they went to bed.
It had been two weeks and this had become their routine, until she heard a knock at the door. She opened it to find a dark skinned woman with the biggest smile she had ever seen. She told Evelyn that her husband had run into her, literally, and helped her pick up the items she spilled.
He struck up a conversation with her and found she was looking for work, but no one wanted to hire her. He said that was ridiculous and he hired her on the spot. Said he needed someone to help his wife because he loved her so much and seeing her breaking down the way she was, was breaking his heart. He cried for his wife, cried for her suffering, and asked, begged, for her help.
Her name was Tanzie and she was a godsend. She helped with anything and everything. She washed, cleaned, cooked, ironed, and cared for the children. But most important, she became the friend that Evelyn needed. She cared for her. Cooking bland foods that she could hold down, offered up advice her mama had for pregnancy, remedies that were a wonder for Evelyn.
Tanzie helped her get back to herself and her family. She was the best friend Evelyn ever had. They shared secrets, dreams, and their lives.
“Mrs. Scully, without the love of my husband, and the care of others, I would have crumbled. I would have given up. I am a lot older than Tanzie was when she showed up that day, but I would like to be here to help you as she did for me.” Evelyn said kindly, looking into Maggie’s eyes.
Maggie sat in rapt attention, tears running down her face, through the whole story. Listening to Evelyn’s story of love filled Maggie with hope, with happiness and such immense love. She read of soulmates, saw it through her father’s eyes, knew she found it in Bill, but Evelyn’s story ... it was pure love and devotion.
And now Evelyn sat there, in a dirty house, with clutter and laundry piling up, offering her help because Philip heard about her need from Bill. A loving heart reached out to another loving heart. As a result, without hesitation, Evelyn came to help Maggie. To offer what she could, however she could.
Through her tears, Maggie smiled and nodded. “Please, call me Maggie,” she said as she grasped Evelyn’s hand, reaching out for the lifeline that had been sent to her.

I had posted all of this story here, chapter by chapter, but now… I’m not sure how to find it. So, I am posting the link to it on AO3. Happy reading… with perhaps some tears along the way. 💕
Could you recommend your favourite post-revival fics in which Scully is pregnant?🥺
Hey there! Thank you for the ask. I am not super knowledgeable about any in particular revolving around that time, other than my own. I wrote a whole story walking through their separation, into the revival, and beyond. I haven’t added something super recently, but I do carry it through in real time. So if you’re interested, here’s the link. 💙 Hope this helps.
It's that time of year again. Another year around the sun for one very special little girl.
October 31, 2025
“Hey,” Rachel said, walking up to join Mulder, Scully, and Faith. Jacob and Elizabeth trailed behind her and then ran to Faith, all of them shouting and jumping up and down. “Walter’s parking the car. It’s really starting to come down out there.”
“Yeah. Thankfully we made it before it got too bad,” Scully said, hugging Rachel before she then turned to hug Mulder.
“I’m so glad the mall offers this option to trick-or-treat, so we don’t have to be out in the rain,” Rachel said, glancing over at the kids with a smile. “You know they would be all for it, right until they weren’t. And then we’d have to walk far carrying them or walk and listen to them cry.”
“A vicious cycle,” Scully laughed, watching as Mulder joined the kids, grasping their hands as they all began to jump and dance in a circle.
“Did they say how long the wait for the table would be?” Rachel asked.
“They said about forty five minutes around twenty minutes ago when we arrived.”
“Oh. Not so bad then.”
“No. And we were waiting for you guys to do the kiddie rides around the corner. Mulder has a pocket full of quarters to spend and time to kill.”
“So thoughtful,” Rachel said with a chuckle. “Does that mean you and I can sneak into the bar and get a drink?”
“Oh absolutely,” Scully said, linking her arm with Rachel’s and nodding to Mulder who nodded back with a smile. “That plan has already been put in motion.”
“I do love it when a plan comes together,” Rachel said as they turned to walk into the restaurant, leaving Mulder with the kids to wait for Skinner.
“How was your day?” Scully asked as they entered the bar and sat down on high backed stools.
“Good,” Rachel said, with a nod. “I had three clients I spoke to in Canada, which is wonderful, knowing I am helping people in other countries. Walter had planned to do some work outside, repairing those loose bricks in the backyard, but it was far too wet. So instead, he put those bookshelves together that we bought a few weeks ago for the twins' rooms. They have been sitting in the garage because I think we’ve both been dreading putting them in their own rooms. There are things we wanted to have in the rooms before we separated them, but we also know that’s not entirely true because they don’t need those things to move them over.” She laughed and then sighed. “They love sharing, but I know that they also would love their own space once it’s given. I can’t believe they’re four and in preschool. It’s…” She sighed again and Scully rubbed her back.
“I know,” she said, looking at Rachel sympathetically. “I’ve been there.”
“Yeah,” Rachel said with another sigh. “Hey, we were getting drinks, right? Not spending this limited time to ourselves wallowing?”
“We were,” Scully laughed, patting Rachel’s back and then signaling to the bartender.
They chatted a bit more before the restaurant pager began to vibrate, alerting them that their table was ready. Scully texted Mulder to let him know to head back and then she and Rachel carried their drinks to the hostess stand.
“Table for Dana,” she said, handing the pager to the hostess. “Our husbands and children will be along in a couple of minutes. They were playing on the kiddie rides while we waited.”
“I have a toddler,” the hostess said with a smile. “I completely understand. Follow me and I’ll take you to your table.”
Rachel and Scully followed her, weaving through the crowded restaurant. Many people were already dressed for Halloween and it was funny to see little monsters or Disney characters enjoying their meal.
“Oh my God, look at that little girl dressed as a cat. Her pink nose is so adorable,” Rachel said, pointing at a table of many children dressed as different animals. “All of them are so cute, actually.”
“They are,” Scully agreed, smiling at the little boy dressed as a blue dragon who roared as he took a bite of food.
“I know the kids wanted to be dressed up for dinner, but we both know how easy it is for there to be a spill.”
“And then it ruins everything.”
“Christ, yes,” Rachel said, shaking her head. “Thank you for having Faith wait as well.”
“Oh,” Scully said with a laugh. “It was easy to convince her of that seeing as she gets to wear her birthday dress to dinner.”
“And it’s such a cute dress. Elizabeth was excited to dress similarly to her.”
“I love that they both love it so much,” Scully said, smiling at Rachel as they reached their table.
After the twins' own birthday gathering earlier in the month, Faith and Elizabeth had gone upstairs and Faith helped her change her clothes to “match” what she was wearing. They had then come downstairs, holding hands and grinning from ear to ear.
“Look!” Faith had said. “We’re twins!”
Both of them had been wearing black leggings, white socks, and t-shirts in similar shades of blue. Faith had even helped put Elizabeth’s hair into a slightly messy ponytail, like her own hair.
“Oh!” Rachel had said, clasping her hands together. “Look at you two. How cute are you?”
“Can you take a pitcher, Mama?” Elizabeth had asked and all the adults had looked at one another with a smile.
“Yes, baby. Let me take your picture.”
The picture had then been added to the photo board in Faith’s room, which contained pictures she constantly rotated depending on what was her favorite at the moment. The ones taken down were then stored on her bookshelf in a treasure box she had decorated with gems and jewels.
Ever since that day, Elizabeth had inquired after what Faith was wearing, asking Rachel to send a message to Scully to see if she could try and match, even if they were not together.
“She loves being “twins” with her,” Rachel said as they sat and she set her drink down. “I love that Faith is so into it too.”
“Yeah,” Scully agreed, as she sat and took the menus from the hostess. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Enjoy your meal.”
“Oh,” Scully said, stopping her before she walked away. “It’s my daughter's birthday today. Would you mind letting our waitperson know?”
“Oh, a Halloween baby. How exciting! I will definitely let them know,” the hostess said, smiling as she left.
“Yeah, it’s been fun having her birthday on Halloween,” Scully said with a small chuckle.
“Definitely sets her apart. A wonderful ice breaker for her to share.”
“Yeah,” Scully agreed, glancing down at her phone as it pinged, seeing that Mulder had responded.
The spooky birthday crew is on our way. 🎂👻🎃
She smiled and took a sip of her drink as she set her phone down and opened her menu.
“The kids are so excited to go trick or treating here,” Rachel said, looking at her own menu. “They have asked me… about a hundred questions to understand how it will work when there aren’t any doors to knock on.”
“Considering their only real memories of the holiday are most likely from last year, I can understand that,” Scully said with a laugh.
“True,” Rachel agreed. “And just them being dressed up outside of the house is out of the norm. It’s all different for them.”
“It’s good to have things be different. Gives us memories to call back as they stick out even more.”
“Okay. Stop therapizing the therapist,” Rachel said, narrowing her eyes at Scully and then smiling.
Scully chuckled and was about to respond when she heard Faith laughing. Looking to her right, she shook her head as she watched the group approaching.
Faith had put on the black glittery birthday sash they had bought for her as a surprise, over her long sleeved beige dress with black witches, orange pumpkins, black crescent moons, and black spiders. The pumpkin bobble headed headband she wore shook as she walked proudly into the room. Behind her, wearing sashes of their own, was the rest of the party.
“Oh. My. God,” Rachel said, staring at them and covering her mouth.
“Mama!” Faith shouted, grinning as she ran to Scully. “Thank you for my sash. I love it!”
“You’re welcome, my love,” Scully said, hugging Faith and attempting to avoid the bobbing pumpkins.
“We have sashes too!” Elizabeth said, showing Scully her own black sash that read Birthday Squad in sparkly silver letters. “We all have them! Even Daddy.” She giggled, looking up at Skinner as he adjusted his sash, a large gift bag with rainbow colored tissue paper held in one hand.
“I think it looks great. I might wear it every day.”
“Daddy! You can’t. It’s only Faith’s birthday today,” Jacob laughed, wrapping his arms around Skinner’s legs.
“Once you’re part of the squad, my boy, you’re in forever,” Skinner said, ruffling Jacob’s hair.
“And here I thought telling the hostess ahead of time that it was Faith’s birthday would be needed. I should have known,” Scully said, laughing as she looked at Mulder.
“After we got the sash for Faith, I knew we needed more, so I went back and got these,” Mulder said, motioning to his sash. “And if you both will stand up, we will bestow your squad sashes upon you.”
“Oh hell yes,” Rachel said, standing up quickly and joining the group. “I do love a good sash.”
Scully moved Faith a little and stood up as well, waiting for her sash to be placed.
“Yay!” Faith clapped, looking at all of them. “I love my birthday squad.” Elizabeth and Jacob clapped too, giggling as they looked at everyone.
“Oh my goodness,” the hostess, who had seated them, said as she walked by. “You all look so great. Would you like me to take your picture?”
“Yes. That would be great,” Scully said, picking her phone up and opening her camera app. “Thank you.”
“Of course.”
They all squished together, the kids laughing happily and proudly showing off their sashes.
Her phone handed back to her, everyone sat down and the kids began talking about the rides they had ridden and how much fun they’d had.
“Uncle Fox is so silly,” Elizabeth said. “He tried to ride the carousel. But he was too big.” She giggled, shaking her head as she looked at him.
“I almost fit,” Mulder said, winking at her.
“No you didn’t, Daddy. You almost got stuck,” Faith said, shaking her head, the pumpkins bouncing on her headband. “Unco said if you did we would have had to call the police.”
“They might arrest you,” Jacob said solemnly, his eyes wide.
“Wouldn’t be the first time,” Mulder, Scully, and Skinner said at the same time, causing them to laugh and the others to look at them in surprise.
“What?” Faith asked. “What do you-”
“Oh wow! Look at this fabulous looking birthday squad!” the waitress said, walking up with a smile. “Happy birthday, birthday girl. How old are you today?”
“Seven,” Faith said with a wide smile.
“Wow. That’s a fantastic age. I loved being seven.”
“We’re four,” Elizabeth said, pointing to her and Jacob. “We’re twins and we’re four now.”
“So it’s a birthday month celebration?”
“My daddy also had a birthday, but he’s a lot older,” Faith said, pointing at Mulder.
“Just a little,” he said and everyone laughed.
“Well, I’d say it’s a good night to celebrate all of you. What can I get you all to drink?” the waitress asked and everyone began to discuss what they would like to have.
“Good distraction,” Mulder murmured to Scully as Faith ordered a Shirley Temple with seven cherries. “Don’t need to be discussing my arrest record.”
“So true,” she said, shaking her head as she smiled at him. He squeezed her knee and she exhaled a laugh through her nose.
They received their drinks and ordered dinner. Faith was given her present while they waited for it to arrive. New fancy markers, vibrant and pastel colored pencils, a black cat shaped pencil sharpener, a large sketchbook, small bottles of paints, new paintbrushes, and a five pack of canvases were opened and exclaimed over.
Pages of the sketchbook were shared with the twins and they all quieted down as they drew pictures, allowing the adults to have a conversation.
When dinner was finished and cleared away, a large group of waitstaff gathered around their table.
“Everyone! We need your attention! Today a birthday is being celebrated, but it’s also birthday month for many at this table. So please join us in singing happy birthday!”
A plate holding a small glass dish of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and sprinkles with a striped candle was set in front of each of the kids. A waiter lit the candles and everyone began to sing.
Faith grinned at Elizabeth and Jacob and they grinned back, all of their eyes shining in the candlelight.
Mulder took Scully’s hand as they sang, his thumb running across the top of hers. She squeezed his hand, her eyes on Faith as she watched the happiness in her smile.
“Make a wish!” Rachel said, clapping when the song had ended.
“Countdown… 3-2-1,” Faith said, holding up three fingers and putting them down until she was holding up a fist.
They blew out the candles and everyone clapped again, including many people in the restaurant.
“Mmm, I love ice cream,” Jacob said as Rachel took the candles from his and Elizabeth’s ice cream.
“And sprinkles!” Elizabeth said, picking up her spoon and scooping up a big bite.
“And chocolate sauce. I love allllll of it,” Faith said, taking out her own candle and then picking up her spoon. “Mmmmm.”
Mulder squeezed Scully’s hand and she drew in a deep breath, nodding with a smile as she squeezed back.
When the ice cream had all been eaten, and chocolate wiped from faces, hands, and spots on clothes, they got up from the table.
“Time to put on our costumes?” Faith asked, spinning around like a ballerina.
“Yup. Let’s go to that family restroom in the mall area. That will be easier,” Rachel said, taking the backpack Skinner was carrying. Scully took the one from Mulder and left him and Skinner to take care of the bill.
The kids ran ahead, laughing and jumping, full of energy.
“To be a kid again,” Rachel sighed and Scully nodded, linking her arm with Rachel’s.
In the bathroom, they all used the toilet before changing their clothes. Yellow long sleeved shirts were worn under overalls and yellow beanies with stitched on goggles were placed on their heads. Faith and Elizabeth had their hair brushed and then braided into two braids.
“Okay, go take a look,” Scully said, pointing to the large mirror in the corner.
They ran over and laughed as they looked at their reflection.
“Ba-na-na,” Faith said, taking the plastic banana from her pocket and holding it up in the air.
Elizabeth and Jacob did the same, taking theirs from the front pocket of their overalls and holding them up high.
“Ba-na-na!” they all shouted and Scully and Rachel laughed.
“Okay, you minions,” Scully said, repacking the backpack and taking out the black tote bags with bananas printed all over them. “Here are your bags for candy.”
“BANANAS!” they all yelled running over to get their bags. “BANANAS! BANANAS!”
“Let’s go, minions!” Rachel shouted above the noise and they all trooped out of the bathroom and into the hallway.
“BANANA!” Faith yelled, leading the way, her banana held aloft.
“BANANA!” Elizabeth and Jacob shouted, also holding theirs high.
“Well,” Rachel said, laughing as she opened the door and the kids ran over to Mulder and Skinner. “We won’t lose them in the crowd. They're loud enough for ten children.”
“Minions!” Mulder yelled. “Tonight… we get… the candy!” He raised his arms up and they cheered.
“Candy!” they all shouted, raising their bananas and jumping up and down.
“Pictures first,” Rachel said, taking out her phone. “Come on, gather up.”
Pictures were taken of the whole group, each family group, the kids, and then Faith took a picture of the adults as Elizabeth and Jacob yelled for them to smile.
“Okay, minions,” Skinner said. “Let’s go get that candy. And make sure you tell them I like peanut m&m’s.”
“Unco,” Faith said with a laugh and he winked at her.
“Come on,” Skinner said and Faith looked at Mulder, who nodded.
“Lead the way, birthday girl,” he said and she grinned.
“Let’s get that candy, minions,” she said, putting her bag on her shoulder and taking Elizabeth and Jacob’s hands. “Baboi! Kanpai!”
“Kanpai!”
Skinner and Rachel followed after them and Mulder stopped Scully with a look.
“Muak? Muak?” he said, pursing his lips.
“Si. Baboi,” she said with a laugh, grabbing a hold of his birthday squad sash as he bent his head, laughing as their lips met.
“I love you,” he whispered, kissing her once more.
“Mmm. I love you too.”
Pulling back, she smiled at him and then laughed as she heard the trio of minions yelling banana again.
“We better catch up. Baboi?”
“Baboi,” she agreed, both of them chuckling.
He took the backpack from her and put it on. Moving Faith’s gift bag to his left hand, he reached for Scully’s hand with his right. Taking it, they began walking toward their group.
“Banana,” Mulder said quietly.
“Ba-na-na,” Scully corrected him.
“Ohhhhh ba-na-na,” he said and she laughed.
Squeezing his hand, she shook her head, smiling as she caught Faith’s eye and she grinned back at her.
“Baboi!” Faith shouted as she and the twins entered the first store.
“Baboi!” the twins shouted back, more than happy to follow her wherever she may lead them.
Pregnancy can be beautiful and also cause chaos. Thankfully having a helpful partner can make a big difference.
Late April, 2001
“Hmm,” Scully hummed deeply and Mulder smiled.
Glancing over at her, he watched her sleeping amidst the many pillows she required to be comfortable at the moment.
It was impossible at times for him to think that soon she would be having a baby.
Their baby.
Despite all the odds and the horrors they had both endured, they had created a life. And not with science, but through their expressions of love and partnership.
They had done what was believed to be unattainable.
“Hmm,” she hummed again, shifting and then sighing.
Her brow furrowed and he reached over to run his thumb across it gently. He watched her face, hoping his touch would calm her.
“Mulder,” she breathed and he smiled again, continuing to stroke her forehead. She drew in a deep breath and her facial muscles relaxed.
“Yeah,” he whispered. “That’s better.”
“Hmm,” she hummed, her eyes fluttering open and then closing.
“Rest,” he whispered and she nodded.
“Oh!” she cried out, her eyes flying open and her hand going to her stomach.
“You alright?”
“Oh… yeah. Just… phew. That was a strong kick,” she said breathlessly, rubbing her stomach.
“Can I feel?” he asked and she looked at him with a smile.
“Of course,” she said, taking his hand and placing it under hers. “I don’t know if he will-”
“Or she,” he said, spreading his fingers wide.
“Or she,” she said with a tired chuckle.
“Since you don’t want to find out,” he said, smiling at her with his eyebrows raised.
“Hmm,” she hummed, closing her eyes as she moved his hand slightly. “I know you want to know, but I-”
“I want whatever you want, Scully,” he whispered. “I’m only joking.”
She opened her eyes and smiled at him.
“I know,” she whispered. “Hmm, did you feel that?”
“Umm…” He shook his head and she smiled again.
“Here. Down a little lower. He… or she… is really doing a number on my bladder.”
“I’m really sorry,” he said, chuckling softly.
“That laugh says otherwise,” she teased, pressing his hand into her stomach.
“I was just picturing them in there with drumsticks, banging away while you need to run to the bathroom.”
“Oh,” she laughed. “That is funny. To picture anyway, not so much to feel.”
“I’m sure,” he said, smiling at her.
“They-”
“Oh!” they both said as the baby rolled under their hands and then pressed into his fingers.
“Jesus,” she breathed, her eyes wide.
“Whoa. That was-”
“Oh, I have to pee,” she said, throwing the covers back and hurrying as fast as she could to get to the bathroom.
He held back a laugh, as he heard her loud sigh of relief when she made it to the toilet, knowing she would not appreciate it.
“Mulderrrrr,” she called out plaintively, and he sat up, pushing the covers off of him.
“Yes?” he asked, standing up and adjusting the pillows on the bed.
“I… I didn’t exactly make it in time,” she said in a quiet voice.
“You need a change of underwear?”
“And pajama bottoms,” she said, sighing with a whine.
“I got it,” he said, walking over to her dresser and taking out a pair of underwear and pajama pants. Closing the drawers, he headed to the bathroom.
She pouted at him as he walked in, still sitting on the toilet.
“Do you know how many times I’ve done this recently?”
“You’re pregnant, Scully,” he said, handing her the items. “It’s not unheard of.”
“I know that, but…” She sighed, laying the clothes on the tub. “It’s just… this is so annoying.”
“Hmm,” he hummed, kneeling down to help take off her pants.
“Oh, you don’t have to do that,” she said. “I can-”
He looked up at her and raised his eyebrows.
“Hey, that’s my kid in there,” he said, pointing at her stomach. “The least I can do is help you change your pants.”
“Mulder,” she whispered, cupping his face and smiling softly.
“Come on, let me help with this. You finish up and we’ll get back to bed. That means you too, buddy,” he said, poking her stomach and then leaning close. “Quit the gymnastics in there and let your mama rest.”
“Mulder,” she said again, moving her hand and rubbing her stomach.
He helped her remove her pants and underwear, moving them to the side.
“Do you want to clean up first?”
“Yeah… I could take a quick shower.”
“I’ll get it ready for you.”
“You don’t have to-” she said as he walked over to start the shower.
“Scully…” he said, looking back at her. “Stop. Take your shower and we’ll be back to bed in no time. Come on.”
Fifteen minutes later, the pillows arranged just so, she was lying with her head on his chest and her arm resting on his waist as he ran his fingers through her hair.
“Thank you for your help,” she whispered.
“Anytime, partner,” he said, kissing the top of her head. She laughed through her nose and he smiled. “Junior behaving?”
“Hmm. Yeah,” she said. “For the time being anyway.”
“If you need anything else, just let me know.”
“Even if it’s mac and cheese?” she teased, and he laughed softly.
“Seeing as how you’ve been all about it lately, I’m one step ahead of you. I made some earlier and it’s in the fridge right now. Do you want it?”
“No,” she chuckled, shifting a little. “Not right now, but I’m sure I will later.”
“I’m absolutely sure you will. Whenever you’re ready. Gotta keep the kid happy.” She laughed again and he smiled. “Sleep, Scully. Dream of mac and cheese, always making it to the bathroom on time, and the most comfortable bed you’ve ever slept in, without the need of all these pillows.”
“Hmm,” she hummed and laughed quietly. “That sounds nice, but I’m content at this moment.”
“Good. Now sleep.”
“Yes dear,” she said, shifting again and tightening her hold on him. “I love you, you know.”
“I do. And I love you too.”
“Hmm,” she hummed.
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
He continued running his fingers through her hair until her breathing evened out and he knew she was asleep.
“No funny business in there now, junior,” he whispered. “We need to let her sleep.”
His own eyes began to droop and his last thought before he fell asleep was for her peaceful slumber.
I’m a day late… I know, but life tends to get in the way. Hope you enjoy this birthday story.
A Happy (Unexpected) Birthday
A bad day leads to a surprisingly good and happy evening.
October 13, 1998
“Shit,” Mulder said through clenched teeth, catching the files slipping from his grip, as he walked down his hallway. “Fuckers.” He shook his head as he readjusted them and took his keys from his pocket.
It had not been the best day. Meetings took up most of the morning and then Scully had left after a quick lunch on an errand for Kersh and never came back. He had stewed at his desk, irritated by everything and everyone around him, counting the minutes until he could leave.
Exactly at five, he had grabbed the stack of files he ignored all day and left, dodging past people and sighing with relief that no one had been in the elevator with him on the ride to the parking garage.
He had ignored his stomach growling, intent on getting home and crashing on the couch. Surely there was something edible in his fridge or cupboards and if not, he could order something to be delivered.
“Happy fucking birthday to me,” he muttered, shaking his head as he put his key in the lock, not having anticipated anything anyway, but still feeling somewhat let down. He opened the door and nearly dropped the files completely.
“Don’t be alarmed,” Scully said, her hands palm up as though to stop him.
“Jesus Christ, Scully,” he said, his heart racing.
“I should be glad your hands are full or I’d probably have a gun pointed at me,” she teased, putting her hands down.
“Yeah,” he agreed. “Most likely.” He let out a deep breath and closed the door behind him, locking it as he turned to look at her. “What are you doing here?”
“Happy to see you too,” she said, smiling at him.
“I…” He shook his head and sighed again, walking toward the table to set the files down.
“Not there,” she said. “The coffee table.”
“Why?” he asked, shrugging his shoulders.
“Because… I brought dinner over and would prefer to eat at an actual table.”
“Dinner?”
“Yes, dinner,” she said with a smile. “So please put them on the coffee table.”
“Dinner for what?”
“Mulder,” she said with a scoff as she rolled her eyes. “Namely to eat, but also because it’s your birthday. You should have a nice dinner for your birthday.”
“You…?”
“Remembered your birthday this year, as well as last year? Yes,” she said with a chuckle. “Go set those down, take your coat off, and come join me for dinner.”
“I… okay.” He shifted the files again and walked into the living room to set them down.
He then took off his coat as well as his suit jacket, hanging them on his coat rack. Loosening his tie, he stood in one spot as he watched her carry out plates of food and utensils wrapped in cloth napkins.
“Sit,” she said, nodding at the chair and disappearing back into the kitchen.
He sat down and looked at the plate before him. Steak, mashed potatoes, and long green beans- one of his favorite meals. He shook his head and looked at her as she came back with two glasses of water.
“One more trip,” she said, brushing his arm as she left the room again. She came back with a bottle of wine and two glasses. “Okay.” She sat down and filled one glass, handing it to him. Filling the other, she raised it to him. “Happy birthday.”
“Thank you,” he said quietly, tapping his glass against hers. She grinned and nodded, taking a long drink.
“Mmm. That’s good.”
He took a drink and then set his glass down, holding her gaze.
“How long have you been here?”
“Mmm, maybe about forty five minutes?” She shrugged and took another sip of wine. “I finished with that monotonous task Kersh asked for and I went to Burt’s to get dinner.”
“This is from Burt’s?” he asked, looking down at his steak in happy surprise. “I love that place.”
“I know,” she said with a small chuckle.
“Thank you,” he said, looking at her again.
“You’re welcome.”
“I didn’t… I wasn’t expecting this,” he said softly.
“Well, then it was a good surprise.”
“Yeah,” he said, swallowing past a sudden lump in his throat.
“Eat up,” she said. “I’ve had it warming in the oven and I don’t want it to get cold.”
“Yes ma’am,” he said, taking out his utensils and laying his napkin on his lap.
They ate in near silence, aside from commenting on how good the dinner tasted.
“I got it,” she said when they were finished, picking up the plates and utensils. “Can you top off my wine?”
“Yeah,” he said, picking up the bottle of wine, as she walked into the kitchen. He refilled both their glasses, giving her the larger portion.
“Happy birthday, Mulder,” she said, carrying out a plate with a cream colored frosted cake, lit by one single sparkling candle.
“You got a cake too?” he asked as she set it down and the candle crackled.
“I made one.”
“What?” he asked, looking at her. “You made a cake?”
“Mmhmm, last night,” she said, sitting beside him. “Make a wish and blow out the candle.”
“The trick candle?” he asked as it crackled again.
“What? Trick candle? What could you mean?” she asked with a grin.
“Mmmhmm,” he hummed, eyeing the candle suspiciously.
“Come on,” she said. “Make your wish.”
He looked at her and then closed his eyes, blowing the candle out softly. Opening his eyes, unsurprisingly, he saw the candle go out and then lit up again, much to her satisfaction.
“Huh. Look at that,” she said with a grin and he shook his head, blowing the candle out again.
Twice more he tried to blow it out and eventually had to remove it and dunk it in his glass to extinguish it.
“That’s what you get for my sparkler candles. In front of everyone, I might add,” she said, raising an eyebrow at him. He smiled at her and then looked at the cake.
“You really made this?”
“I did,” she said with a nod.
“Why?”
“It’s… it’s your birthday,” she said simply, frowning at him.
“But you’ve never done that before. And you didn’t have to,” he said, shaking his head.
“I wanted to,” she said, searching his face. “Would you rather I hadn’t?”
“No! Not at all. I just…” He shook his head again and sighed. “No one’s made me a cake in a long time. Probably since I was young.”
“Well,” she said, taking a sip of wine and then standing up. “Then you were due for it.” She smiled as she squeezed his shoulder and then walked into the kitchen.
He looked back at the cake, remembering the birthdays before Samantha disappeared. His mother had always made whatever flavor of cake they wanted, often a double layer like the one on the plate in front of him. Spice was the flavor he always chose, with a creamy vanilla frosting. No one else liked it as much as he did, but cake is cake and it was eaten quickly.
“Hope you made a good wish,” Scully said, breaking into his memories as she returned with plates, forks, and a knife. “Something to do with getting out of our current work situation?”
“Yeah,” he said with a quiet chuckle. “Get out of the pen with so many people around.”
“Then I hope it comes true,” she said, cutting into the cake and laying a piece on his plate. “Here you go.”
“Thank y- it’s spice,” he said in surprise.
“Yeah,” she said, cutting a slice for herself.
“That’s my favorite,” he said, looking at her and then the cake.
“I know,” she said, sitting down and handing him a fork.
“How did you-”
“Mulder…” she laughed. “How long have we known one another? How many hours have we filled with discussions about our lives? You think I don’t know your favorite flavor of cake is spice?” She smiled at him as she picked up her fork, ready to take a bite, but waiting for him.
“You like yellow cake with chocolate frosting, even though yellow is not technically a flavor,” he said and she nodded.
“There now. See?”
“Yeah,” he said, nodding as he gathered up a forkful of cake, the smell of it reminding him of the past. She filled her fork as well and they took a bite at the same time.
“Mmmm,” she hummed, nodding happily.
“I concur,” he said, taking another bite.
She smiled, watching him enjoy the cake and then set her fork down.
“It’s been shitty lately,” she said softly. “For lots of reasons. I came home last night… and just… thought a funny birthday card wasn’t enough to cut it this year. I found a recipe for spice cake and well…” She shrugged and then ran a finger through the frosting, licking it off with a sigh. “It was going to just be the cake, but I was starving when I left that office Kersh sent me to. So it became dinner and cake.” She smiled and he nodded.
“It has been shitty,” he agreed.
“Yeah.”
She picked up her fork and they each took another bite.
“Thank you,” he said, placing his hand on her wrist and squeezing gently.
“You’re welcome. Happy birthday.”
“Thank you. Truly.”
“Hmm,” she hummed, covering his hand and squeezing back.
He let go of her wrist with a nod, taking another bite of cake. The memories of the past danced around in his mind as a new one was created in the present.
While on a case, Scully and Mulder have some downtime.
Mid October
Scully waited, her eyes cutting to Mulder as he paced around, trying not to laugh. He huffed out a breath and she had to turn around and cover her mouth.
It had been his idea to check out the large corn maze in the center of the small town they were currently in.
“Didn’t you ever want to explore a corn maze, Scully?” he had asked when they drove past it on their first day.
“Not particularly,” she had said, shaking her head.
“Really?”
“No. And especially not after we’ve recently been chased through cornfields in the dark,” she had said, looking at him pointedly.
“Well when you say it like that…” he had grumbled and she had smiled.
Despite the case they were working on and his main focus being there, they had driven past the maze many times and every time she had seen his look of longing.
As they were leaving a diner, after a late lunch, he had stopped her at the passenger door and looked at her with the puppy dog eyes he did so well.
“We have some time on our hands, seeing as we need to wait on those labs, what do you say to checking out that corn maze?”
“You can if you’d like.”
“If I’d… by myself?” He had frowned and shaken his head. “I don’t want to do it by myself.”
“I don’t exactly have the right shoes on for traipsing through a corn maze,” she had said, looking down at her heels.
“We could stop by the motel, grab your running shoes,” he had said with excitement in his voice. “It would take ten extra minutes.”
“Mulder…”
“Come on. What’s the fun of a corn maze on your own?” He had stuck his lower lip out and she had smiled.
“Really? The pout?”
“I will use whatever works to get what I want.”
“Oh… I am very much aware of how you operate,” she had said, crossing her arms and raising her eyebrows.
“So…?” he had asked hopefully, smiling and sticking up his thumbs. “Come on. It’ll be fun.”
“A corn maze in the warm October afternoon sun… what could go wrong?”
“Yeeeeessss!” he had said, raising a fist in the air. “You won’t regret this.”
“Somehow I don’t think that’s the truth,” she had said as he opened the car door and grinned at her.
“If you feel you do, I’ll buy you a piece of pie as an apology.”
“Then we’ll be back here soon. I saw an apple crumble pie that looked good, but I’ll attempt to have a good time.”
“That’s the spirit,” he had said, closing the door after she had sat down. She had laughed quietly as he hurried around the front of the car and then got inside. “I saw you smile. You’re not fooling me.”
“Hmm,” she had hummed, running a hand in front of her face and erasing her smile.
“Yeah yeah. I know you’re excited.”
“You can’t tell that. I’m a blank canvas.”
“Right,” he had laughed, starting the car. “Sure.”
They had stopped at the motel, changing into more comfortable clothes as well as shoes, and then headed to the corn maze.
“Welcome!” the man at the entrance had said, grinning at them as they walked up. “We hope you have a fun time in our maze, Elvira.”
“Oh,” Mulder had said, looking at Scully with a happy smile. “Elvira?”
“Yeah. We name them every year,” the man had said with a nod. “This year is Elvira, because she’s beautifully spooky.” He had chuckled and nodded again. “I have a map here, which I highly recommend.”
“I think we got it,” Mulder had said, waving the map away with a shake of his head. “We’ll be alright.”
“Sir, I-”
“We’ll be alright,” he had said again, looking at Scully. “Come on, let’s go.” He nodded and headed toward the beginning of the maze.
“I-” the man had said, looking at Scully helplessly.
“I’ll take it,” she had said quietly, accepting it from him. “Save you from sending in a search party.”
“It’s just that-”
“I understand,” she had said, smiling at him as she folded the map and put it into her back pocket. “Thank you.”
So they had ventured in, joining others who ran around laughing and got scared by workers who popped out of corners.
Mulder had made wrong turns, doubling back at times, as she followed without saying a word.
Now however, they had been past the same spot three times and he had stopped walking, determined to figure out which direction to head before they took another step.
“We already went left,” he murmured, pointing to the left. “But we’ve also been to the right and those are the only way out of here… so if we go right and then left… maybe…” He shook his head as he looked around and she drew in a deep breath.
“Mulder-”
“I’m not lost,” he said, glancing over at her.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to,” he said and she licked her lips to stop her smile. “I can hear your words without you speaking them.”
“I’ll try to keep it down then,” she said and he stared at her through narrowed eyes. “Please proceed.”
He exhaled loudly and began to pace back and forth again, muttering under his breath. She crossed her arms and watched him as people ran past them, laughing and yelling to one another.
“Okay,” he said with a deep sigh. “Take out the map I know you took and let’s figure this out.”
“The map?”
“Scully…” he said, stepping closer and rolling his eyes. “I know you have the map he offered us.”
“The one you refused,” she stated.
“The one I refused,” he agreed with a nod.
She smiled and uncrossed her arms, taking the map from her back pocket. Unfolding and opening it, she handed it to him. He hummed in annoyance as he studied it, his finger moving across the page.
“Okay. I think I got it.”
“Alright. Lead the way.”
“You don’t want to double check?”
“Eh. I trust you to lead us out of Elvira,” she said, clasping her hands together. “And, that slice of pie is calling to me.”
“You…” he said, shaking his head and laughing softly. “Alright, come on.”
Following the map, making only a couple wrong turns, they finally walked out of the exit.
“Congratulations! You made it!” a woman said, handing them each a button pin from a small box she held. “Hope to see you again.”
“Hmm. That’s nice,” Mulder said, putting the map in his pocket and then pinning his button to his shirt as she held hers.
“I survived Elvira, 1998,” Scully read, before pinning hers on as well. “Now, about that pie…”
“Yeah, I know,” he said, nodding toward the car. “Let’s go.”
She smiled as she fell in step beside him, the thought of the apple crumble causing her mouth to water.
Life on the run can lead to many different adventures...
August 2003
Scully smoothed down the simple black dress she wore, exhaling a deep breath. She picked up a brush and ran it through her hair, tucking it behind her ears as she glanced in the mirror.
The door opened behind her and she turned to see Mulder walking into the room.
“I almost forgot what it felt like to wear one of these,” he said, pulling at his tie as he walked over to her.
“It has been awhile,” she said, reaching out to adjust it for him. “You could have opted out of it, you know.”
“Nah. Gotta do it right,” he said, grinning at her.
“Hmm,” she hummed, smiling back at him.
“I mean, I wore one for years, so I can handle it now.”
“Yeah,” she agreed, running her fingers down his tie.
“You look good,” he said, pulling back to look her up and down.
“Thank you.” She grinned as he continued to look at her. “You seem surprised.”
“By your beauty? Never.”
“Yet… your tone implied otherwise.”
“Did it?” he asked, putting his hands on her hips and rubbing his thumbs back and forth.
“Somewhat.”
“I apologize if that was the case.”
“Hmm,” she hummed, her hands on his chest. “You ready?”
“Yup. Stupider people than us have done this, right?”
“I’m… sorry?” she asked, pulling back and staring at him with her eyebrows raised.
“What? Did I-”
“Stupider? Are you implying that I’m stupid?”
“What?! No! I-”
“You asked if I-”
“I know I did.”
“But now you’re saying I’m stupid? Or we’re stupid for doing this?”
“No! Wait. Wait. That’s not… not what I…” He sighed heavily and then closed his eyes as she bit back a smile. He drew in a deep breath and then looked at her. “That was the wrong word.”
“Was it?” she asked, crossing her arms, keeping her face void of emotion.
“It was. I was trying to be funny, I guess,” he said quietly.
“Mmm. I don’t know if you were successful there,” she said, shaking her head and looking down. “I don’t think I’m stupid. Especially for doing this.”
“Scully. Jesus. I’m sorry. It’s not what I meant.” She saw his feet as he stepped closer and she had to fight hard to not laugh. “Scully, please…”
She raised her head and looked at him, seeing the worry in his eyes, and she took pity on him.
“Mulder,” she said softly, placing a hand on his cheek.
“It was the wrong word.”
“Not stupid,” she said, shaking her head.
“Not stupid,” he agreed with a nod.
“Maybe crazy is what you meant,” she suggested with a smile as she stroked his cheek. “And a bit impulsive.”
“Hmm…” he hummed, pulling her close and resting his forehead against hers. “Maybe a bit impulsive.”
“Not crazy?” she asked.
“No,” he assured her. “Well, I mean I’m crazy.”
“Yes,” she laughed. “I know that.” He chuckled softly, swaying them slightly, before pulling back and holding her gaze as he shook his head.
“Maybe it’s a little impulsive, but… not surprising, right?” he asked.
“No,” she said, her stomach feeling alight with happiness.
“No,” he agreed.
“Hmm,” she hummed, smiling at him. “So then, not stupid?”
“No,” he said, his face serious. “That was definitely not the right word.”
“Good,” she said.
“Hmm,” he hummed, resting his forehead against hers again.
A knock sounded at the door and they pulled apart as it opened.
“Hello. You two ready?”
Scully smiled at Mulder and nodded.
“Yeah. We are.”
“More than,” Mulder said, taking her hand and interlocking their fingers. She held his arm with her other hand and followed him out the door.
“Wait right here,” the woman who had collected them said, smiling as she opened one of the tall doors in front of them and stepped inside, the door closing behind her.
“Nervous?” Mulder asked in the silence.
“Are you?” Scully asked in reply, looking up at him.
“Kind of,” he whispered.
“Why?” she asked, squeezing his hand.
“I really couldn’t say.” He shook his head as he stared at her.
“Is it a happy nervous maybe?” she asked, taking his other hand and squeezing them gently.
“Absolutely. Very happy.”
“Me too.”
“Glad we’re in it together,” she said with a smile.
“Always.”
“Always.”
He bent his head and kissed her softly as music began to play behind the door.
“Oh, I think that’s our cue,” she whispered against his lips, kissing him once more.
“Hmm. Yeah. Let’s do this.”
He pulled back, smiling at her as he let go of her hands. Holding out his arm, she slid hers through it and let out a deep breath, her stomach filling with nervous excitement.
Both doors opened, two women smiling at them as they waited for them to enter, the music louder now. It was violins and a cello playing a song she could not place, but was incredibly beautiful.
“Come on,” Mulder whispered, covering her hand and giving it a squeeze.
Stepping into the room, they walked down the small aisle and stood in front of the officiant who beamed at them.
“Hello. I’m so happy you’ve come here today, to be joined in marriage, freely and of your own will.”
Mulder exhaled and she smiled, her grip on his arm tightening, as the officiant continued speaking though she was no longer paying attention.
She concentrated on the sounds around her, the smell of the flowers on the small altar in front of them, the scent of Mulder’s cologne, and the quick beating of her heart.
Their vows were standard ones that millions of people had spoken before them, but the ones spoken with their eyes were for them alone.
The rings they exchanged had been purchased at a flea market they had perused a month previously, needing a break from the monotony of their days.
It had been a joke at first, him picking one up and getting down on one knee, drawing attention from the crowd around them. She had stared at him in wide-eyed shock as he grinned like a madman.
“Please, my love. I can’t bear the thought of my life without you,” he had said with great exaggeration and she shook her head.
“Maybe we should make it past a first date and I’ll let you know,” she had teased, trying to withdraw all the eyeballs upon them.
People laughed, shaking their heads as they had walked away. He had gotten up, head downcast as he handed the ring back.
“Well now hold on,” she had said. “I didn’t say no, just not yet. Buy a woman dinner first, man. Dinner… then we can discuss marriage. How does that sound?”
“Oh. Well, in that case,” he had said, taking out his wallet. “I’m gonna need that ring back, sir.”
“I think you better grab its mate then, buddy,” the man had chuckled, taking a larger ring from a different box, holding both for them to see. “I made these myself. They aren’t much of anything fancy, just rings I’ve created from old silverware, trying to give it new life, but what’s that saying about beauty?”
“It’s in the eye of the beholder,” Mulder had said, taking the rings and looking intently at Scully, silently asking her all he needed to say. She had nodded slightly and he grinned. “Yeah… we’ll take both.”
The rings had stayed in the small case the man provided, in a holder in the center console of their car. Nothing much was said about them, but Mulder had often held her hand after that, rubbing his fingers across her ring finger.
Driving into the east side of Lake Tahoe, they had seen a sign advertising same day weddings. He had looked at her and she had smiled. Opening the console, she had taken out the case of rings and held them on her lap.
“Well,” Mulder had said softly. “Okay.”
The marriage license purchased, they had gone shopping. Separating and paying at different counters, they had looked for a church that would take them on short notice.
Now they stood, vows and rings shared, the officiant nearing the end of the service. She looked down at her “not so fancy” ring and found it to be the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.
“And so, by the power that has been vested in me, by the state of Nevada, I pronounce you husband and wife. From now, until death parts you.”
“Well,” they both said, staring at one another and then laughing, the officiant looking confused.
“We’ve been through a lot, you see,” Mulder said by way of explanation. “Felt like death at times.”
“Oh, I see,” the officiant said with an understanding nod. “Well, you’re now married and tied to one another forever. Oh… and you may now kiss your bride.”
“With absolute pleasure,” Mulder said, bending his head and pressing his lips to hers gently- once, twice, three times. She smiled as he straightened up, his hands grasping hers.
“Congratulations,” the officiant said as the wedding march began to play and they turned, arm in arm, to walk back up the aisle.
The women at the doors smiled at them, murmuring their congratulations as well and they thanked them.
Mulder directed her back to the room to collect their things, closing the door behind them and leaning against it, as he stared at her. She shook her head and grinned at him.
“My wife,” he whispered and she stepped forward, wrapping her arms around his neck.
“My husband,” she whispered, kissing him tenderly.
“I love you,” he whispered, kissing her again.
“I love you too,” she whispered back, running her fingernails along his neck. “Not stupid.”
“No. I’d say it’s one of the smartest things we’ve ever done.” He nuzzled his nose against hers and she exhaled a laugh.
“Crazy and impulsive.”
“Definitely. But what’s life without a little bit of crazy?”
She laughed as he kissed her, whispering his love once again, his fingers dancing softly along her back, as her heart rate doubled.
While out shopping, Mulder and Faith share an important conversation.
October 2025
“But you promised!” a child screamed from the next aisle over, causing Mulder to raise his eyebrows in surprise. “I want it! And you promised I could have something!”
“I said if you were good, you could choose a treat. This is not the behavior I meant,” her parent replied.
“Ahhhhhhh!” the child screamed again.
Mulder looked at Faith as she stood on the front of the grocery cart, looking to her left, her eyebrows furrowed.
“Millie! That is enough!”
“I want it! I want it!”
“Hey,” Mulder said softly and Faith turned her head to look at him, her face concerned. “You still want to get ice cream?”
“Yeah,” she whispered. “Can we?”
“Of course,” he said, smiling at her with a nod. “Let’s go see if they have any new flavors.”
“Okay,” she whispered again.
“Hold on,” he said, gripping the handle of the cart and pulling it back and forth a couple of times. “This baby is about to take off at a break neck speed. You ready?” He watched her grab hold and then smile.
“Ready.”
“Here… we… gooooooo!” he said, running a few steps and making whooshing sounds. She laughed and then let out an excited squeal. “It’s the Mulder cart, coming around the corner, will they beat their previous time?”
“Yes!” she shouted, still holding on tightly.
He turned the cart to the right and went over two aisles, mindful of the other shoppers. He turned to the right again and then stopped halfway down the frozen aisle, right in front of the ice cream section.
“A new record!” he said, raising his arms in the air. “I knew we could do it.”
“Hooray!” Faith said, letting go and stepping off the cart.
“Now, let’s see about those ice cream flavors huh?” He grinned at her and she smiled back.
“I want it!” the child called Millie shouted again and Mulder watched Faith as she drew in a deep breath.
“That little girl is loud,” she said, looking up at Mulder.
“She is,” he agreed with a nod. “We should try to ignore her and go about our own business.”
“You’re being mean to me!” Millie yelled.
“I’m not. You’re being rude and extremely loud. We are leaving.”
“But I waaaaant it! No, Mommy. I waaaaaant it!”
“Absolutely not. Your behavior is unacceptable.”
Her voice began to fade as they walked out of the store, her mother telling her to hush.
“I think she’s having a bad day,” Faith said, looking down the aisle although they could not see the little girl.
“It sounds like it, yeah,” Mulder said, watching her carefully.
“Maybe she’s hungry?” Faith asked, looking back at him. “You tell me that a snack will sometimes help me feel better if I’m being grumpy.”
“I do,” he said with a nod.
“Maybe… maybe that little girl was hungry and so she didn’t know how to behave,” Faith said with a shrug.
“Could be a lot of things,” Mulder said. “Could be that she’s hungry or tired, or maybe she could have been allowed to act that way without being told no before and now that she’s having consequences, she doesn’t like it.”
“Maybe,” Faith said, looking back down the aisle.
“Even if she was,” he said, tugging gently on Faith’s braid to get her attention. “It’s not acceptable to act that way. Screaming and acting up… hmmm.” He sighed and she nodded.
“It’s not nice.”
“No. It’s not.”
“I don’t do that,” she said quietly, her face serious.
Kneeling down, he reached out to her and she came over to him. He took her hands and squeezed them gently.
“No. No, you don’t.” He smiled, but she frowned. “What?”
“Did I ever do that?”
“Not once.”
“Not once?” she asked quietly and he squeezed her hands again.
“Never,” he assured her. “Do you wanna know why?”
She nodded, squeezing his hands and stepping closer to him. He smiled, letting go of one hand to stroke her cheek, and then tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“You never did that because Mommy and I didn’t raise you to behave that way. We didn’t put the idea in your head that you had to act a certain way somewhere and it meant you might get a treat or a toy if you were good. We’ve raised you to speak up, have an opinion, and reason with us about things. We’ve spoken to you with respect and therefore we’ve received respect from you. If you wanted something, you just had to ask and we would have a discussion about it.”
“And you almost always say yes when I ask,” she stated, putting her hand on his shoulder and fiddling with the collar of his shirt.
“I do,” he said with a smile, knowing it was hard to say no to her when she asked for something that he knew would bring her joy. “But… I don’t say yes because I don’t want you to act up or yell, it’s because I like seeing you happy and most of the time, whatever you want, will also be fun for me.”
“Like the Lego sets?” she asked with a smile.
“Heck yeah. Or even just ice cream,” he said, gesturing to the freezers beside them. “I love ice cream.”
“And popsicles?”
“Of course! How can you not like popsicles?”
“I love them.”
“What? I had no idea,” he said, feigning surprise before booping her on the nose.
“I like both,” she said with a smile.
“And I do too. So, saying no to an ask for them means you’re sad and then I don’t get a popsicle or ice cream.” He smiled again and she nodded. “But, if you had demanded them or screamed the way that little girl did, I would have said no to buying them.”
“Because it’s not nice to act that way.”
“How did it make you feel when you heard her?”
“It scared me at first because it was so loud.”
“Me too,” he said. “Or maybe not scared, but startled. Like… a bad surprise… sort of.”
“Yeah. I guess it was more like that.”
“Hmm.”
“Then I felt… sort of uncomfortable. Like… when I don’t know the answer at school.” She stared at him and he nodded with a soft smile.
“A completely understandable feeling. It also made me feel uncomfortable.”
She nodded as she looked down, her fingers still worrying his shirt collar. He waited, not pushing, and gave her hand a little squeeze. She looked up and let out a deep breath.
“I never did that?” she asked again and he shook his head.
“Never,” he said, squeezing her hand a little tighter.
“Okay. That’s good. I wouldn’t want to make another little kid feel uncomfortable.”
“Faith Mulder,” he said quietly, pulling her in for a hug. “You have the kindest heart.” He closed his eyes and held her tight. “You get that from your mama you know.”
“She said I get it from you,” Faith said and he grinned. Pulling back, he shook his head as he looked at her.
“She did, huh?”
“Yeah. I told her I shared some of my lunch with a friend at school and she said it sounded like something you would do. She said that you have a big heart and you think of others and how they feel.”
“Well,” he said with a chuckle. “She would do the same, so maybe you got that from both of us.”
“I think so,” Faith said, nodding solemnly.
He laughed and hugged her again.
“I can agree to that,” he said, kissing the side of her head. Pulling back, he rubbed her cheek again. “You good?”
“Yes,” she said, smiling brightly. “I’m good. Thank you, Daddy.”
“You got it, Kindheart,” he said and she giggled. “Now, let’s get some ice cream. If your old dad can get off the floor that is.”
He grunted and groaned, exaggerating the effort of getting to a standing position. She pushed and pulled, laughing as she helped him. When he was up, she wrapped her arms around his waist.
“I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you too, baby,” he said softly, savoring the moment. He rubbed her back and gently scratched the top of her head.
“Can we get popsicles and ice cream?” she asked, looking up at him.
“Of course we can!”
“Yay!”
And so a serious discussion was had, debating over which flavors and brands to buy.
Items procured, the Mulder cart raced to the checkout line amid much laughter, the previous moments not forgotten, but used as a learning experience of understanding and empathy.
Hey there! It’s been a while but Fictober is upon us and I’m going to try to write more. Here’s the first story. 😊
Seminar Discussions
A little bit of teasing while at a boring seminar.
Mulder sighed deeply beside Scully and she bit back a smile, her attention on the speaker in the front of the room. He sighed again and she glanced at him with a slight shake of her head. He rolled his eyes and she cleared her throat to cover a chuckle.
“And so in conclusion, the uptick we've seen, we hope to bring down. Thank you for your time.”
Polite applause filled the room as the host speaker retook the stage.
“Thank you all. We will be taking a break for lunch now-”
“Thank fuck,” Mulder breathed, sitting up and shaking his head.
“Mulder…” she warned and he let out a deep breath.
“- just at the end of the hall. See you in about an hour.”
“What’s at the end of the hall?” Scully asked, having missed what was said.
“An escape route? A portal? The last few hours of our lives back?” Mulder asked, standing up and stretching. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so bored.”
“Not even during a budget meeting?” she teased, standing as she gathered her notes and their welcome folders.
“No. Not even then.”
“Hmm,” she hummed, placing the items into her attache. “Not sure I believe that.”
“I’m also starving.”
“I offered you that muffin this morning,” she reminded him, raising her eyebrows.
“The sugar-free bran one? I’ll repeat what I said earlier, no thanks,” he said with a scoff.
“Well, if you’d had it…” she said, walking from their seats and towards the door. “…you wouldn’t be starving now.”
“I disagree. I can’t imagine that muffin held any nutritional value.”
“I’m not starving,” she stated, filing behind the other agents as they walked down the hall.
“But were you fulfilled by it? Be honest.”
“It was…” she began and then stopped. He turned his head, raised his eyebrows, and grinned at her.
“Go on,” he said, motioning with his hand for her to proceed.
“I’ve had better muffins,” she admitted. “But, it’s not always about what tastes best, but what will fuel you for that moment.”
“That is such bullshit,” he said with a laugh.
“It’s not.”
“Scully,” he said, gently pressing her shoulder with two fingers to stop her from walking. “What’s the point of eating a meal if you aren’t enjoying it?”
“Mulder,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I’ve seen you eat expired yogurt and handfuls of old, stale peanuts… which was incredibly disgusting. I hardly think a bran muffin compares to either of those.”
“A sugar-free bran muffin,” he said pointedly, with a tilt of his head.
“That’s worse than stale peanuts?”
“It would have been,” he said as she rolled her eyes and then licked her lips. He smiled and she shook her head.
“Excuse me,” someone said, and he stepped back, allowing a group of fellow agents to walk between them.
“Come on,” Scully said, tilting her head toward the end of the hall. “I’m assuming lunch is being served down there, although I know you were hoping for a portal.”
“Because anywhere is better than here,” he grumbled.
“Mulder…”
“I know.”
“There was no way out of it,” she said.
“I know,” he said again. “And I’m here, am I not?”
“You are. And in such good spirits about it,” she teased.
“How anyone could be in good spirits at these seminars, I don’t understand,” he said, watching people talking and laughing as they milled around.
“At least there aren’t any team building activities.”
“Scully… don’t even joke about that,” he said, his voice dropping an octave. She snorted out a laugh, covering her mouth quickly as he shook his head and closed his eyes briefly.
“If I’d known it was that kind of seminar, I would have gotten us out of it,” she assured him, resuming their walk down the hall.
“Ohhhh, what would you have said?” he asked, falling in step beside her.
“I wouldn’t mention hemorrhoids, that’s for sure,” she said and he chuckled, their eyes meeting in a side glance.
“So instead you’d say…?”
“I would have gone to Skinner and said, A.D. Skinner, I know that we missed the last seminar-”
“But solved a case-”
“Which we had not technically been a part of-”
“But in which our expertise came in extremely helpful-”
“Though they had not been asked of us and-”
“Without us,” Mulder said, stopping just inside the doorway of the large room in which lunch was being served, and looking at her. “They probably never would have found any of those people. They would have died out there in that forest.”
Scully drew in a deep breath, holding his gaze, as she made a decision whether to continue the discussion they’d had many times over the past year. He tilted his head, waiting for her response.
“They may not have been found,” she agreed and he nodded, smiling slowly.
“But…?” he questioned, aware of what her next words usually were.
“But,” she said, “it’s brought us here, for this seminar. Buuut… I had really wanted to win that team challenge. You cost me that accolade and I still haven’t forgiven you.” She raised her eyebrows, keeping her face neutral even though she wanted to laugh as she watched him processing her words.
“Wh… you…” he stumbled.
“I could have had a golden stapler. Or been the first one to solve a giant puzzle. You stole that from me.”
“You…” He frowned and then she could no longer hold back her laughter. “Oh.”
“Mulder,” she said, squeezing his upper arm and shaking her head. “You need to eat. That shouldn’t have taken you so long.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he said, huffing out a breath.
“Come on, let’s find a table and then grab some food.”
She stepped ahead of him, still laughing quietly.
“Teasing a man who hasn’t eaten since last night,” he said, his hand landing on the small of her back, his fingers pressing gently. “That’s not exactly kind.”
“Food was offered. It was refused. Therefore, teasing is not unkind.”
“Hmm,” he hummed and she smiled.
“Glad we’ve come to the same conclusion,” she said. “Maybe next time you’ll make a better decision?”
“Maybe next time you will as well, and say yes to the delicious sugar filled option.”
“You never know, but I might do that. I do like to keep you on your toes.”
“Oh, Scully,” he said, as she set her attache down at a two seater table. “Of that, you don’t ever have to worry. I’m practically a ballerina at this point.”
Her laughter rang out, his hand once more landing on the small of her back. She led them to the buffet line, picturing Mulder spinning around on pointe shoes and possibly wearing a tutu.

Chapter Four
Just a Dream
Scully’s eyes flew open as she gasped quietly. She looked at the bedroom door, her heart pounding. Something was wrong, but she was not sure what it could be.
Mulder shifted, letting out a deep breath and then snored softly. She glanced at him, wondering if she should wake him and tell him of her concerns, but the sound of the doorknob turning pulled her attention away.
The door opened and Faith stepped into the faintly lit room and paused, breathing hard.
“Love?” Scully whispered. “You okay?”
A whimper. A whine. And then she was running to the bed, pressing her face into the blankets. Scully turned and placed her hand on Faith’s head, stroking her hair.
“My sweet girl, what is it?” Scully whispered, her mouth near Faith’s ear. “Are you okay?” Faith shook her head and Scully scrunched her chin. “Did you have a bad dream?” A nod and Scully smiled sadly as she rubbed Faith’s back, pulling the covers open. “Come up, love. Come on.”
Faith moved, sobbing quietly as she pulled herself up into the bed and burrowed into Scully’s arms. She was warm and her hairline was slightly sweaty. It must have been a pretty bad dream for her to be so overly warm.
“Hmm,” Scully hummed, holding her close as Faith cried and shivered with a whimper. “I’m so sorry you had a bad dream, my love. Do you want to talk about it?” Faith shook her head and Scully hummed again. “Okay. That’s okay.”
Mulder mumbled in his sleep and Faith gasped. She pulled back and looked at Scully.
“Is Daddy there?” she asked, her eyes wide.
“Yes, sweetie,” Scully said, smoothing back her hair and then rubbing her thumb over her tear streaked cheek.
“My dream was he was gone. I called for him, but he didn’t answer me. I could see him sometimes, but then he was gone. I walked and walked and then started to run, but he wouldn’t let me find him. I couldn’t find him,” Faith said, beginning to cry again.
“Oh, honey,” Scully said, moving so Faith could see Mulder sleeping beside her. “He’s right here. Do you want to lay between us?”
“Yes,” Faith said, still crying softly. “I want to see he’s really here.”
“Mulder,” Scully said, touching his shoulder and giving him a little shake. “Mulder.”
“Huh,” he breathed, his eyebrows raising, though his eyes remained closed.
“Daddy?” Faith said, getting closer to him. His eyes opened instantly and he blinked as he focused on her.
“Baby? You okay?” he asked, clearing his throat.
“You’re here,” she whispered, touching his face.
“Course I am. Where else would I be?” he asked, smiling at her as he covered her hand with his own.
“I couldn’t find you in my dream. You were so far away,” Faith said, tears falling once more.
“Oh, honey. Come here,” he said, his smile disappearing as he pulled her to him, Scully adjusting the covers as they all settled together.
“I called for you and you didn’t hear me. You… I…” She cried in his arms, holding onto his shirt.
“I’m so sorry, my love. I’m sorry you had a bad dream.”
“I was so scared that you were gone forever.”
“Never. I would never leave you.”
“My heart was beating so fast when I came in here. I didn’t want to tell Mommy because I didn’t want her to be sad if you were gone.”
“Oh, honey,” Scully whispered, rubbing her back as she looked at Mulder.
“But then I heard you and Mommy said you were here,” Faith said, taking a deep shaky breath.
“Right here, love,” he said, his eyes on Scully’s as he shook his head slightly and sighed. “I’m so sorry you couldn’t find me.”
“I found you now,” Faith said, sniffling and then drawing in a sobbing breath.
“I’m right here,” he said again, closing his eyes and kissing her temple. “I would never leave you, my love.”
“Can I sleep with you? And Mommy?”
“Of course you can.”
“Oh… but I forgot Aley,” she said in a sad voice and Scully smiled, patting Faith’s back gently.
“I’ll go get her for you, my love. Be right back.”
“Thank you, Mommy,” Faith said, pressing even closer to Mulder as Scully got out of bed and walked to Faith’s room to get Aley, the grey alien with the pink belly.
Her covers were a tangled mess and one of her pillows was on the floor. Scully pulled at the covers, straightening and smoothing them before placing the pillow back onto the bed. She picked up Aley, turned off Faith’s night light, and left the room.
Coming back into their bedroom, she closed the door and got back into bed, sighing at the warmth lingering within the blankets.
“Here’s Aley,” she said, handing the alien to Faith.
“Thank you,” she whispered, holding it between her and Mulder.
“You’re welcome,” Scully whispered back, meeting Mulder’s eyes and silently asking if she was okay. He nodded once and she smiled. Moving closer, she kissed the top of Faith’s head.
“I love you, Mommy,” Faith said, reaching her hand up and onto her shoulder, waiting for Scully to take a hold of it.
“I love you too, my love,” Scully said, giving her hand a squeeze. “I hope you have better dreams now.”
“I will. Daddy said he would hold me all night, so I will be sure to know he’s right here.”
“He’s a really good Daddy,” Scully said, looking at Mulder with a smile, and Faith nodded.
“He is,” she said, yawning and then humming out a sigh. “I’m tired now. I love you, Daddy.”
“Love you too, my Squatchy girl,” Mulder answered, kissing her temple softly.
“Hmm,” she hummed again, her eyes closing as she began to breathe deeply.
Scully and Mulder stared at one another as she fell asleep, her grip on his shirt slackening as she did.
“I hate that she had a dream like that,” he whispered with a frown.
“I know,” Scully whispered back, squeezing Faith’s hand gently before letting go. “But it was just a dream.”
“Was it?”
“Yes,” she said with a nod, deciding not to mention how she had woken up just before Faith had come into the room, chalking it up simply to mother’s intuition. “Just a dream. A bad one, yes. But just a dream.” He sighed as he looked down at Faith.
“I don’t want her to ever worry about that,” he said. “To have the fear that I won’t be there. Or you.” He raised his eyes and looked at Scully.
“It was just a bad dream,” she whispered again, moving even closer and placing her arm on his hip, encompassing Faith. “Tomorrow she’ll tell you what she remembers and then move on from it.”
“Yeah,” he whispered in agreement, touching his forehead to hers as Faith hummed in her sleep and Scully smiled softly, closing her eyes with the hope for better dreams.
_______
“Mommy?”
Scully opened her eyes and saw Faith’s face inches from hers.
“Hi, honey,” she said, humming and then clearing her throat. “How are you?”
“I have to go to the bathroom.”
“Go ahead, my love.”
“Okay.”
Faith shimmied around and extricated herself from the blankets, crawling across the bed with Aley in her hand.
“Leave Aley,” Scully said, closing her eyes as she stretched. “She doesn’t need to go in the bathroom with you.”
“Okay.” She left Aley on the bed as she slid down and then walked to the bathroom, pushing the door open with a squeak.
“Hmmm,” Mulder mumbled and then sat up in a panic. “Where’s Faith?”
“Bathroom, hon,” Scully said, patting his arm as she looked at him.
“Is she-”
“She seems okay. But we’ll talk to her.”
“Yeah.”
She smiled at him and he nodded, glancing toward the bathroom. Laying back down, he stared at her.
“She’s okay,” she said again.
The toilet flushed and then the water was running at the sink. They heard her feet stepping across the floor and then she was climbing back into the bed, grabbing Aley as she made her way between them.
“Hey, love,” Mulder said. “How are you today?”
“I’m fine, Daddy. How are you?” she asked, getting under the blankets. Scully stifled a laugh, a hand at her mouth, as she stared at him.
“You had a bad dream last night, do you remember?”
“Umm, a little bit.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“I just couldn’t find you. I didn’t know where you were.”
“Okay and then-”
“Then I came in here and I found you. You weren’t really gone. You were right here. I just forgot.”
“Yes, I was here,” he said with a smile as she pet Aley’s head. “But it was a dream. You didn’t forget anything. It was a dream making you think I was gone.”
“My brain was tricking me,” she said with a nod and he looked at Scully, his eyes wide.
“Well, not exactly that,” he said, fighting back a smile. “Dreams aren’t tricks, although they might seem that way sometimes, especially if it’s a bad one.”
“I don’t like bad dreams,” she said, turning toward him and snuggling close.
“I don’t either,” he said, rubbing her back and smiling at Scully.
“Good dreams are better.”
“They are, but sometimes we do have bad dreams. But, if you do have one, you can always do exactly what you did last night and come in here with us. We can’t stop the bad dreams, but we can be here to talk about it and hold you if it helps you feel better.”
“It does make me feel better. I like sleeping with you and Mommy. Your bed is warm and cozy.”
“I feel the same about your bed. It’s very soft, Goldilocks,” Mulder said and Faith giggled.
“No. It's just right,” Faith said and Scully smiled, understanding the groundwork he was laying for later when bedtime came around.
“It is just right. The perfect bed for you. Especially with all your stuffies.”
“Like Oreo,” she said, talking about the large orca whale she had gotten recently for Valentine’s Day from Skinner and Rachel.
“Like Oreo,” he agreed. “Do you-”
“I’m hungry,” she said. “Can we have pancakes?”
“Uhhh sure,” he said as Scully laughed silently.
“Yay!” Faith said, pulling back and kicking away the blankets. “I’m gonna go get Oreo.”
“Oh…kay,” he said, giving her the space to get out of the bed. “Get your slippers on and we’ll go downstairs.”
“Can we have pink pancakes?” she asked, looking back at him.
“Whatever you’d like, love,” he said and she grinned.
“Thank you, Daddy,” she said. “Oreo will be happy to hear about the pink pancakes. She will say hooooooooray.”
Scully laughed and Faith smiled at her as she continued off the bed and out of the room. She looked back at Mulder and he shook his head.
“See? Just a dream.”
“The way children can bounce back from things should be studied, if it hasn’t already.”
“I agree. They-”
“Pink pancakes? That sounds goooooooood,” Faith said from her bedroom, speaking in Oreo’s whale voice.
“Jesus Christ, I love her so much,” Mulder said, pushing the blankets back and getting out of bed with a grin as Scully laughed and shook her head.
“Me too,” she said, laughing again as she also got up, the anticipation of pink pancakes causing her stomach to growl.

Chapter Three
Snowy Findings
Mulder looked back as he walked along the path to the A-frame cabin he and Scully had rented for the week. It was quiet in the woods, the sun just beginning its climb into the sky. The snow crunched softly under his feet until he stopped, letting out a deep breath.
So much white surrounded him, it was easy to spot the flash of orange and black he was waiting to see.
“There you are,” he said quietly, smiling as the small cat that had been following him walked closer.
It stopped a few feet from him and stared him down, its fluffy tail twitching back and forth.
“Hey, kitty,” he said, squatting down and staring back at it. “Psp psp pssp. Come here.”
The cat tilted its head and then made a trilling sound as it hurried over to him. It pressed against his hand, its purr loud in the quiet around them.
“What are you doing out here?” he asked, rubbing its ears as the purring seemed to grow louder. “Do you belong somewhere close by? You don’t have a collar.” The cat closed its eyes, pressing further into his hand. “You’re a cute thing.”
He looked around, contemplating what he would do. He could not leave the cat behind, knowing there were predators in the woods. But on the other hand… he was not sure bringing it back to the cabin was a good idea. They would only be there a few days and then what would they do with it?
“Whoa!” he cried as the cat suddenly jumped onto his back, meowing loudly. “Hey now, I can’t have you there. Come on down.”
He reached for it, turning his shoulder inward to make it easier. Grabbing at the scruff of its neck, he brought it forward and held it up for inspection.
It was small in size as well as weight, probably still technically a kitten. It had big green eyes and on one side of its mouth, it had what looked like a beauty mark.
“Oh… yeah,” he said with a chuckle. “I have to bring you with me now, Kitty Scully. Look at that face.” He laid it in his arms like a baby and checked by its tail. “Hello, little girl. Looks like you found a home, for a few days anyway.”
The cat closed her eyes and rubbed against his coat, purring loudly. He laughed and turned back down the path, talking softly to the cat as they made their way back to the cabin.
He opened the door and walked into the small entryway, toeing off his boots and leaving them by the locked door. He opened the next door and hummed at the warmth of the sitting room. He had started a fire before he left for his walk and it had heated the room perfectly. Walking to their halfway open bedroom door, he pushed it open, the cat continuing to purr in his arms.
Scully was still sleeping, the thick blankets wrapped around her. He smiled at the sight of her, looking between her and the cat.
“Well,” he said, sitting on the edge of the bed and holding the cat as he rubbed Scully’s arm. “Hey. Hey, hon.”
“Hmm,” Scully hummed, shifting a little.
“Scully,” he said and she hummed again.
“Whaaat?” she breathed, but did not open her eyes.
“I have something to show you.”
“Mmmmulder… no…” she groaned and he chuckled as the cat meowed.
Oh, now she was awake, her eyes opening wide as she scrambled to sit up.
“What was that? What do you have?”
“A wee cat I found in the woods,” he said, looking at the cat.
“What? Let me see.”
He lifted the cat a little and she gasped as she looked at it.
“It was all alone?”
“Yeah. Followed me for a fair bit and then came straight to me.”
“So small,” she said, petting its head. “He’s barely more than a kitten.”
“She,” he corrected her. “It’s a girl.”
“It’s a calico, I should have known.”
“Did you see this?” He pointed to the dark spot near her mouth. “She’s Kitty Scully.”
“Stop,” she said with a small laugh. “Can I hold her?”
“Yeah.” He transferred her to Scully’s arms and she immediately snuggled against her, purring loudly again. “She likes you.”
“What are we going to do with a cat? We can’t keep her.” She looked up at him, her brow creased. “Here or with us when we leave.”
“We can while we’re here,” he said, rubbing under the cat’s jaw. “It’s supposed to snow tomorrow. We can’t put her out in that kind of weather.”
“We don’t have anything here for a cat.”
“There’s a store down the road. We can get some things.”
“I’ll go,” she said. “Can’t be too safe.”
“Okay,” he said and she looked up at him, her chin scrunched.
“I love her already,” she said and he laughed.
“I know how you feel.”
The snowfall made it easy to stay inside where a warm fire was always burning. They used that time to play with the cat they called Shadow, seeing as she followed Mulder both outside on the trail and inside the cabin, always wanting to be by his side.
“What are we supposed to do with her?” Scully asked as Shadow lay between them on the bed, their last night in the cabin, purring quietly as she fell asleep.
“It wouldn’t be sensible to bring her. Living in a car is no life for a cat,” he said, not sure who he was trying to convince.
“But…” Scully said, scratching Shadow gently under the chin. “She’s your shadow.”
“Scully, come on…” he said, shaking his head. “You’re supposed to be the pragmatic one.”
“I can’t be at the moment,” she said, putting her face near Shadow’s and giving her a kiss. “Don’t ask me to be tonight.”
“The last night.”
“Stop talking,” she said, a quiet sob escaping as she kept her face close to Shadow’s.
In the morning, they packed up and silently drove toward town to drop off the keys and ask about a nearby shelter. Shadow lay in Scully’s lap, washing herself and purring softly. Scully ran her fingers back and forth over the top of Shadow’s head, sighing often.
At the rental agency, he put the car in park and sighed as he turned off the ignition.
“Okay, I’ll be-” Scully started to say, but he stopped her.
“I’ll do it.”
“But they might-”
“They won’t pay attention to me. But I’ll wear my hat and glasses, just in case. You stay here.”
“Okay,” she whispered, petting Shadow with the backs of her fingers.
He got out of the car and walked into the building, his steps feeling heavy. For so long, it had been just them, and now they had something that relied on them and brought them joy.
How was he supposed to take that from her? From both of them?
He walked up to the desk and waited, the question he did not want to ask taking up residence in the back of his throat.
“Did you enjoy your time at the cabin?” the older woman with the kind face asked him when she walked over to the desk.
“Yes, thank you.”
“That’s wonderful. Thank you for staying and please come again.”
“Yeah,” he said. He opened his mouth to ask where the shelter was, but the words would not come out. “Uhhh… thank you again.” He smiled and stepped back, walking out of the building.
Through the windshield, he saw Scully hugging Shadow with tears on her cheeks, and he knew they would never be searching for that shelter.
Opening the door, he got in and heard her sniffle. Shadow trilled a meow at him and he smiled at her as he took off his hat and sunglasses, setting them on the dashboard and then looking back at her.
“It’s an odd old life we live, Shadow girl,” he said softly and Scully sniffled again. “One we didn’t plan. But nor did we plan to find you.” He sighed and looked at Scully, seeing the tears in her blue eyes, but also a small spark of hope. “If we can adapt, I think she can learn to as well.”
“Mulder,” Scully breathed, reaching for his hand.
“I can’t lose my shadow,” he whispered.
“No,” she agreed with a sob. “No, you can’t.”
He smiled and her tears spilled over. Cupping her face, he wiped her tears and then leaned in to kiss her.
“Let’s get outta here.”
“Yeah,” she agreed, kissing him once more.
He started the car, turned on the heater, and looked over at Shadow who meowed at him as she curled up in Scully’s lap. He laughed softly as he backed up and they drove down the snowy road, the sound of Shadow’s contented purrs filling the car, as Scully’s hand reached for his, squeezing as she held it.

Chapter Two
A Watchful Eye
Scully glanced around the room, her eyes scanning over everyone quickly, her hands in fists as she did.
They had been placed on a special assignment by Skinner- undercover surveillance of a high ranking senator at a fundraising dinner. His life had been threatened and people below his station had already suffered injuries as a result of the suspect attempting to get to him through them.
While she did not care for his politics, and even less for his personal life, as an FBI agent, her duty was to protect.
The room they were in was large and filling with more people by the minute. The face of the suspect was seared into her memory and by constantly scanning the room, she knew they would find him before he was able to hurt anyone else.
“Nothing at the west entrance,” Mulder said and she heard it in her concealed earpiece.
“Nor the south,” Agent Bonner replied. “But there is a large group heading toward me. Getting closer for a better look.”
Scully looked to her left and saw Agent Bonner smiling as he approached the south entrance.
“What a lovely dress,” he said to a woman and Scully heard her laugh. “Have a good evening. Perhaps I’ll find you for a dance later.”
“Oh… I’d like that,” came the woman’s reply and now Agent Bonner was laughing. Scully did another scan of the room before looking back at Bonner.
“Negative,” he said, the earpiece crackling and causing her to wince, though she did not draw attention to it.
“Excuse me.”
Scully turned to her right and saw a blond man with green eyes standing beside her.
“Yes?”
“I couldn’t help but notice you from across the room,” he said with a smile and she held back a groan. “I saw that you were without a drink and came over to offer to remedy that for you.”
“Oh,” she said, quickly scanning the room once again.
“Unless you’re here with someone and I’ve made a miscalculation?” the man asked, his eyebrows raising, though his smile remained in place. “If I have, I do apologize. It’s just that you standing here on your own and looking so beautiful, I couldn’t help but-”
“There you are,” Mulder said on her left hand side. She turned to look at him, surprised he had made it from his post so quickly. “Sorry, honey. Got tied up at coat check.” He placed his hand on her lower back and bent to kiss her temple. She stared at him as he stood to his full height, the pressure of his hand increasing. “Have you made a new friend?”
“Seems I have,” she said, looking back at the blond man. “Darling, this is… I’m sorry I didn’t get your name.”
“I hadn’t introduced myself yet, no,” he said, his eyes flicking between them.
“He offered to get me a drink.”
“Oh, did he? You have been making new friends.”
“I didn’t know she was with anyone. Didn’t see a ring…”
“You see?” Mulder said, taking her left hand in his and shaking his head. “I’m always telling her the same thing. Without the ring, no one knows and everyone feels they have a chance.”
“And I tell you…” she said, pulling her hand from his grasp. “… the diamond is too big and I want to downsize it.”
“That’s three months salary, babe. No way. I want you to show that off.”
“Two months is standard,” she said and he laughed softly.
“Nothing about me is standard,” he said, sliding an arm around her waist and pulling her close, his lips near her ear. “As you well know.” She laughed and leaned into him, playing along.
“Well,” the blond man said, clearing his throat. “Seeing as how you are not alone and have someone willing to get your drinks, I’ll… Goodbye.” He turned sharply on his heel and walked away.
“Yeah. Goodbye,” Mulder said, his arm still around her waist. “Give it a second.”
His lips were pressed against the shell of her ear and she put her head down, hoping it blocked the view of her eyes closing at the feel of them there. She worked at controlling her breathing, which had increased, as well as her heart rate.
But sweet suffering Jesus… he smelled so good.
“He’s looking over here,” Mulder whispered and she swallowed before throwing her head back and laughing. Placing a hand on his chest, she pushed back slightly as she smiled.
“Drinks?” she said, raising an eyebrow and glancing toward his station where she saw Agent Pruitt now standing. “Or I could ask my new friend…”
“Hmm. Unnecessary,” he said, taking her hand and kissing her knuckles as he stepped backwards. “I’ll be back soon. Keep an eye out for me.” He nodded with a glance over her left shoulder and she nodded back.
“I’ll be here.”
He let go of her hand and she kept an eye on him until he disappeared into the crowd of his fellow tuxedo wearers, though she could spot him within seconds. Smoothing her hands over the simple, yet elegant black cocktail dress she wore, she began her surveillance once again.
“Nicely handled,” came Skinner’s gruff voice.
“Thanks,” they both said, and she held back a laugh as her eyes flicked through the new faces she had missed.
“All clear here,” she stated.
“Front entrance is gumming up,” Agent Kendall said. “Gonna need another agent.”
“Heading your way,” Agent Pruitt said and Scully glanced over to see him and Mulder switching places with a nod.
Agent Pruitt walked away and Mulder caught her eye as he began to watch the room. He smiled slowly at her and just as he had done years ago on a similar assignment, he winked at her. She smiled back and shook her head, rolling her eyes as turned her head.
“West entrance clear,” he said and hearing his voice in her ear was not the same as feeling it vibrating against her skin.
“Center still clear as well,” she said, wishing he was standing beside her, causing her heart rate to double.
But… knowing that in the overly crowded room, his gaze paused to rest on her every few seconds, she found she was unable to hold back a smile.

Chapter One
That Damn J-O-B
The basketball hit the floor as he dribbled down the court. Stopping at the free throw line, he bounced the ball twice more and then shot it to the net. It hit the rim and then ricocheted back at him.
“Oh, so close,” he heard behind him, causing him to spin around in surprise and miss catching the ball. It hit him on the ass and he winced as Scully laughed, tucking her hair behind her ear.
“Jesus. You scared me,” he said, rubbing his ass as the ball rolled past him.
“So delicate,” she said, stopping the ball with her foot and then bending to pick it up.
“How dare you,” he said, shaking his head. “Have you not seen how manly I am?”
“Hmm,” she hummed, rolling her eyes as she smiled. He smiled back as he looked her up and down.
“I’d say that’s a nice shirt, but I’d be lying.”
“You don’t like the Lakers?” she asked, looking down at the shirt she was wearing.
“I do not. As you are aware,” he said, motioning to his Knicks shirt. “They are my enemy.”
“Your enemy?” she asked with a chortle. “Yours? Didn’t know you had joined the team.”
“I’m a sideline participant.”
“They pay you for that?” she asked, bouncing the basketball a couple of times.
“All the money I’ve spent over the years… they should.”
“Should they pay every fan?” she asked, stepping back as she continued to bounce the basketball.
“Sideline participant,” he corrected her and she laughed with a nod.
“I stand corrected.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wear that before,” he said, silently admiring the way it hugged her curves. He did not see her in such casual clothing of this nature and it was hard to tear his eyes away.
A long sleeved white shirt under the purple Lakers t-shirt, black non-work slacks, and black Converse… she could almost be mistaken for a college student.
“You own Converse?”
“They’re on my feet,” she said, rolling her eyes again. “It would seem I own them.” She tossed the ball to him and he caught it, letting out a surprised breath.
“How’d you know I was here?” he asked, dribbling the ball.
“It’s after hours of your J-O-B…” she said with a shrug. “It’s where you’ve been recently. Even during work hours.” Raising an eyebrow, she held out her hands and motioned with her chin for him to toss the ball.
“My J-O-B…” he said, shaking his head as he bounced the ball to her. He sighed and she nodded, dribbling the ball.
“We got the basement back,” she said, grabbing the ball and holding it as she stared at him. “The files.”
“I know,” he answered. “And I am glad. But… I keep thinking about those people at the base. All those bodies.” She drew in a deep breath and nodded. “It’s not what I wanted.”
“I know that.”
“It’s not the truth I hoped to find. At least not that way.”
“I know that too.”
She gave him a sad smile and he let out a deep sigh, nodding slightly.
“Let’s put a bet on whether I crush you at sinking this ball,” she said, beginning to dribble again. “Loser buys.”
“I’ve got nearly foot on you,” he said with a snort. “You think you can beat me?”
Two bounces and she tossed the ball. It hit the backboard, before falling silently through the net. His mouth dropped open as he looked at her in disbelief.
“Yeah,” she said, nodding with a smile. “I think I’ll be alright.”
“Well… shit,” he said and she laughed as he went to retrieve the ball. Tossing it back inbounds, he shook his head. “I hope I have some cash.”
“Oh, I’m sure they’ll take a credit card,” she teased, as she started to dribble the ball, her shoes squeaking on the floor as she moved from side to side.
“Or I’m washin’ dishes,” he said, stepping onto the court.
“Either way,” she said, running toward and then around him, jumping as she tossed the ball into the net again. “Two points.”
“Yeah, yeah,” he said, waiting for her to throw the ball to him. “Bring it on.”
And for the next thirty minutes, he forgot about the J-O-B that had recently been weighing him down.
A storm hits Virginia, prompting a snow day filled with fun.
(part 66 in the Family Series)
January 5, 2025
“Sheesh,” Mulder said as he came inside, Bella following behind and shaking, just over the threshold. “It’s really cold out. Smells… like snow.” He drew in a deep breath as he shivered.
“Which you already knew is going to happen, seeing as we saw it on the news tonight,” Scully teased from her spot on the couch, where she was reading a book.
“Weather people are wrong all the time,” he said, taking in another deep breath. “But I know how it smells before it snows. I can feel it.”
“In your bones?” she asked with a smile.
“What are you trying to say?” he asked, turning his head to look at her.
“My great aunt used to say she could feel snow in the hip that she broke, which then became arthritic.”
“Your much older aunt, I’m sure.”
“Than me? As a child? Yes,” she said, turning a page and smiling. “But she was probably only in her seventies.”
“Well, that is old,” he said with a nod.
“Yes. And so much older than sixty three,” she said, watching him out of the corner of her eye.
The door closed harshly, the lock sounding louder than usual, as he turned to stare at her, his eyes narrowing.
“That’s a seven year difference. It’s huge.”
“Weren’t you saying something about your shoulder aching this morning?” she asked, a smile pulling at her lips.
“You mean where you shot me?” he asked, unzipping his coat and taking off his beanie. “Yeah. That tends to aggrieve me from time to time.”
“You mean when I saved your life,” she said pointedly. “You’re welcome, by the way.”
“And I’ve thanked you many times over the years, as you well know,” he said, hanging up his coat and beanie on the coat rack. “Must I do it every time it’s brought up?”
“Yes. Every time,” she said, nodding and licking her lips.
The floor creaked and she fought back a smile, keeping her eyes on the book in her lap. The ponytail she wore was grabbed gently and her head was tilted back. When she looked at him, she saw the smile on his lips as well as in his eyes.
“Thank you,” he whispered, before his lips pressed to hers. “Thank you.” Another kiss. “Thank you.” Another kiss and then another, his tongue touching hers briefly before he pulled back. “There. Now I have three freebies to simply nod the next time you bring it up.”
“Two. You didn’t technically thank me tonight.”
“Oh,” he said, bending his head and kissing her once more. “Thank you. Now it’s three.”
“We’ll see. Everything is negotiable.” He chuckled and she smiled, placing a hand on his cheek and then pulling it away. “Jesus, your face is freezing.”
“I was just outside in the soon to be snow filled air, Scully. Of course my face is freezing.” He stood up and released his hold on her hair, running his fingers across her neck as she yelped in surprise. “Sorry, were those cold too?”
“You know they were,” she said, rubbing at her neck as he chuckled again.
“I’m going to go down to the basement and get the container of snow clothes, hopefully everything still fits Faith. We haven’t had a good snow day in a while.”
“Hmm,” Scully hummed, her attention back on her book. “It should be fine, but she has new boots at least. We can put together an outfit of random items if needed.”
“She’s gonna be so excited,” he said and Scully smiled as she listened to him walk down the basement stairs.
Grey jumped onto the couch with a meow and stepped into her lap, purring loudly as she kneaded the blanket covering Scully.
“Hey, you,” she said to Grey, whose eyes were half closed. “You’ll probably want to stay inside tomorrow, it’s going to snow.” Grey began to purr louder as Scully rubbed her ears with a smile. “We won’t be so lucky with Faith wanting to go out and play. But it will be fun. Oh, I wonder if we have hot chocolate. Sorry, sweet girl, but I’m gonna need to leave you without a lap. But you can stay snuggled in the blanket.”
She placed her book beside her and then moved Grey as she stood up. Setting her back onto the blanket, she covered her as she had done when she was a kitten, making sure she was cozy before she went to see about their hot chocolate stash.
Finding two boxes, one with marshmallows and one without, she took down the box with marshmallows and set it on the counter. Checking to see if there were enough ingredients for pancakes and eggs, she then walked over to the door, unlocked it, and opened it.
A gust of cold air greeted her and she shivered, wrapping her long, dusty blue cardigan around her. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and smiled.
“Yeah, that’s snow air,” she said, opening her eyes and looking up at the still clear sky. She nodded, knowing it would all change in just a couple of hours.
“Hey, what are you doing with that door open?” Mulder asked and she turned to look at him.
“Just wanted to smell the incoming snow.”
“You feeling it in your bones?” he teased as he set the gray container of snow clothes down.
“No. I’m far too young for any of that,” she said, shaking her head.
“Okay,” he said, nodding as he laughed through his nose and took off the lid to begin taking out clothes.
“It smells so good. So crisp and anticipatory.” She drew in another deep breath and let it out. Shivering again, she shut the door and locked it. “It will be a different sight out there next time we open the door.”
“Good thing school was already closed in preparation,” Mulder said, laying Faith’s clothes on the back of the couch.
“And I don’t have to work. Though I’m sure I wouldn’t have been able to make it there even if I did.”
“Nor should you have had to try, as much as I know you would want to,” he said, looking over at her. “We need you safe.”
“Aww. You love me,” she teased, walking over to him and wrapping her arms around his neck.
“Eh. You’re alright,” he said, sliding his arms around her waist as she laughed softly.
“Thanks.”
“Hmm,” he hummed, swaying them slowly. She smiled, shaking her head as he winked at her before lowering his head to kiss her.
“You’re alright too,” she whispered, kissing him again.
“Thanks.”
She laughed again and then pulled back.
“Okay. What have we got here?”
They looked through the clothes and took out anything that seemed too small.
“It’s a good start. We can add stuff tomorrow if needed,” she said and he nodded, now laying out their own clothes beside Faith’s. “And we have stuff for breakfast as well as a box of hot chocolate.”
“With-”
“Yes. The one with marshmallows,” she assured him with a smile.
“Yessssss,” he said, punching a fist into the air.
“Who persuaded who to buy that box?” she asked, crossing her arms and raising her eyebrows, knowing full well it was him.
“Oh, it was definitely me pushing for it,” he said. “But when she saw it had rainbow colored marshmallows, well… the box went straight into the cart.”
“Nothing but net,” Scully said and he nodded, miming throwing a basketball.
“Three points in overtime,” he said and she laughed, shaking her head.
“Well, we’re ready,” she said, touching the clothes and then yawning. “Just gotta wait for the snow.”
“You head on up, I’ll take care of stuff down here.”
“Thanks, hon,” she said, giving him a quick kiss.
“Warm my spot up,” he said as she started up the stairs.
“And leave my spot cold? No chance.”
“I thought you loved me!” he said.
“When it’s cold like this, it’s every man, or woman, for themselves.”
“My cold feet will definitely be making an acquaintance with yours.”
“Ha!” she said quietly as she continued up the stairs. “I’ll be wearing socks, so good luck with that.”
“Oh, I’ll be trying.”
“Yeah, yeah.” She smiled as she reached the top and stopped at Faith’s door. Opening the door quietly, she stepped inside the room to check on her.
The small portable heater they had purchased recently was keeping the room warm, but not overly so. Covering Faith, she kissed her on the cheek and smoothed back her hair.
“Hmm,” Faith hummed, turning over and sighing deeply.
“It’s going to be so much fun tomorrow,” Scully whispered, kissing her one more time. Leaving the bedroom, she closed the door softly and continued to their bedroom.
Dressed, with long thick socks on, their own small heater shifted to a lower setting, she laid under the covers, waiting for the sheets to warm up from her body heat.
Mulder came up a few minutes later, being loudly quiet as he closed the door.
“The bed warmed up?” he asked, opening and closing drawers.
“Once you get in, it should start to become so.”
“Hmmm,” he hummed as he went into the bathroom.
When he slipped into bed a few minutes later, he pressed flush against her, his arm going around her.
“Hey! No stealing my warmth!” she said, trying to move away.
“I’m not stealing it, woman. I’m adding to it. Just stay still,” he said. “I’ll even keep my feet away.”
“Mmm,” she grumbled, frowning as she resituated in her spot, his body pressed even closer. “No funny business.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” he chuckled near her ear. “There are far too many layers for that at the moment.”
“Mmhmm,” she agreed, as she relaxed into the bed. “Just warmth tonight.”
“Agreed.”
“Good.”
He sighed as she closed her eyes, her arm over his as they lay close together, the small heater humming and filling the room.
Blinking her eyes, she woke slowly, the sun just beginning to light the day. Closing her eyes and attempting to sleep longer, she remembered the snow. Opening her eyes, she pushed the covers back and stood up. Mulder mumbled in his sleep, turning onto his side as she walked softly across the room.
Stepping into the cool bathroom, she looked out the window and sighed happily at the blanket of snow on the ground, watching as it continued to fall.
“Absolutely beautiful,” she whispered. Breathing out, she steamed up the window and drew a heart. “It’s gonna be a cold but fun time out there.”
She used the bathroom, washed her hands and face, and then brushed her teeth. Walking back to the bed, she got back under the covers and moved closer to Mulder, wrapping her arm around his waist.
“Hmm,” he hummed. “No stealing warmth.”
“Adding to it, remember?” she whispered, kissing between his shoulder blades, his shirt soft under her lips.
“Hmm,” he hummed again, the heater hissing softly as it kicked back on.
“It snowed,” she said, kissing him again and then pressing her cheek against his back. “It’s actually still falling.”
“A lot on the ground?” he said in his sleep graveled voice.
“Enough for a fun day.”
“Well,” he said, clearing his throat and squeezing her hand. “Let’s not waste any of it.” She laughed quietly and nodded against him. He pushed the covers away and sat up with a small groan, then stood to his feet.
“Sure the cold won’t bother you?” she teased and he turned around with narrowed eyes.
“Just watch it, woman.” He pointed at her as he walked backwards to the bathroom and she laid on her back, staring at the ceiling with a grin.
“It’s more than I thought,” he said, coming back to the bed a few minutes later and standing at her side. “I think we can make a few snowmen.”
“Ahem,” she said, raising an eyebrow.
“And women,” he said and she nodded.
“No aliens? Or Bigfoot? Or any other monsters?”
“We’ll see how the day goes,” he said, holding out a hand to her. “Come on. Let’s go wake up our girl.”
She took his hand and he pulled her from the bed, kissing her before they walked hand in hand to Faith’s room, opening the door quietly.
To their surprise, she was standing at her window, inside the curtains as she stared outside.
“Oh, you’re already awake, love,” Mulder said and Faith turned to look at him, pushing the curtains back, her smile huge.
“Daddy! It snowed! Did you see? There is so much!”
“I did see,” he said, walking over to her and looking out the window. “Wow. Isn’t it beautiful?”
“Can we make snow people?”
“We can, my love,” Scully said, coming over and smoothing down Faith’s bed head. “Right after breakfast we can go out.”
“Yay!” Faith shouted, jumping up and down. “Can we have pancakes?”
“It’s like you read my mind,” Scully said. “I was thinking the same thing.”
“Yay!” Faith shouted again, spinning around happily.
“Come on,” Mulder said, scooping her up and causing her to squeal and then laugh. “Let’s eat and head out to play in this winter wonderland.”
“Pan-cakes! Pan-cakes!” Faith chanted from his arms, her own raised in the air. Scully laughed as she followed behind them down the stairs and into the kitchen.
Mulder took Bella out, intent on going to find the sleds out in the shed, if they decided to go sledding down the big hill.
Faith helped make the pancake batter, carefully measuring out the flour and baking powder.
“I’m getting really good at helping you cook, Mommy. I like to do it,” Faith said, grinning at Scully as she started to carefully mix the ingredients.
“You are, my love,” Scully said, kissing her on the head. “Makes it taste better when you help make it, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah,” Faith agreed with a nod.
After they each had a full stomach and had been to the bathroom, twice, they dressed for their morning outside, the snow still falling softly.
Bella bounded outside when the door was opened, barking as she ran down the stairs and into the snow.
“It’s so pretty,” Faith said quietly, standing on the porch and staring out at the yard.
“It is,” Mulder and Scully both said, smiling at each other.
“Let’s go play in it!” Faith said, walking carefully down the stairs.
They followed behind her and walked through the powdery snow in their boots. Faith laughed as she spun around, snow falling down upon her. Tipping her head back, she stuck out her tongue.
“I caught one!” she shouted, looking at them with a huge grin.
“Yeah, you did. Try it again.”
She did with a laugh and then fell back into the snow, making a snow angel. Scully pulled out her phone and took pictures of her, smiling at the happiness she exuded.
“Daddy make one with me. And you too, Mommy. We can make our family.”
“Oh, I can’t say no to that,” Mulder said, lying next to her and making an angel. Scully put her phone away and then laid on the other side of Faith, raising her arms up and down and her legs open and closed.
When they were done, they got up carefully, smiling at the snow family they made. Scully took pictures and then they moved on to making snow people.
They had two done when Faith grew bored and Mulder suggested sledding.
“Yes!” Faith shouted.
“How about you guys play out here for just a bit longer and I will get some snacks ready for us to take along,” Scully suggested. “Unless you need to use the bathroom, Faithy…” She looked at Faith and she shook her head.
“I’m okay, Mommy.”
“Okay. How about you two make a snow cat and before we leave for the hill, we all go to the bathroom?”
“Okay!” Faith agreed. “I want to make a Grey snow cat!”
“You got it, babes,” Mulder said. “Let’s get cracking.”
Scully left them and went inside, only taking off minimal clothing as she packed a backpack with snacks and water, saving the hot chocolate for when they came back.
After they trooped back in to quickly use the bathroom, they left the house with two sleds and set off for the big hill. Faith sat in one of one of them and Mulder pulled her along the empty snow filled street, Scully carrying the other.
“Mush! Mush!” she called to him, waving her arm in the air. “Faster, doggie, faster.”
“Your bones will be tired tonight,” Scully said, side eyeing him.
“Pfft,” he expelled through his lips, shaking his head. “Faster you say, Squatch? I can do that.” He pulled the sled faster and Faith laughed happily, passing Scully and leaving her behind.
“Goodbye, Mommy!” Faith called, looking back at her and waving.
“Bye, love,” she called, waving back at her as Bella barked and chased after them.
Taking a deep breath, she readjusted the backpack and sled, looking around.
Jafadine, the large wooden giraffe at Violet and Denis’s house, was covered in snow, looking out of place for an animal from such a warm climate.
“Jafadine,” Scully said as she walked past, Faith’s laughter echoing back to her. “You’ll be needing a coat. It’s going to snow again soon.” She smiled as she continued on, the silence around her feeling different in the snow.
“Scullllaaaaayyy!” Mulder called and she snorted out a laugh, shaking her head.
“Well, the silence was nice,” she said to herself, looking up to see them, standing and waiting at the bottom of the hill.
“Come on, Mommy!” Faith called, waving her arms back and forth.
“Coming, love!” she called back, walking a little faster, dropping the sled and pulling it behind her.
Bella ran up to her, her whole body wiggling happily. She licked Scully’s hand and then started running back to Faith, who giggled as she caught her. Scully smiled at them, catching Mulder’s eyes as he nodded.
“Okay,” he said as she reached them. “Let’s start up the hill.”
“To the top?” Faith asked, looking up, snow falling softly onto her face.
“Maybe just to the middle? See how the walk is for you?” he suggested. “Walking through snow is a little more work.”
“Can you pull me up?” she asked.
“Yeah, can you?” Scully asked, looking up at him and smiling.
He looked between the two of them, taking in a deep breath.
“Let’s walk first and see how it goes. Snow is more work, like I said, for all of us. Adding your work to my own work makes it harder for me each time,” he said, Faith staring intently at him. “So, let’s do our own work and then if you need me to help you, I will.”
“Okay, Daddy. I’ll walk on my own. Can I hold your hand?”
“You… you absolutely can,” Mulder said, his voice a little shaky as Scully felt tears prick her eyes.
He held his hand out to Faith and she smiled as she took it, their mittened hands holding tight. Shaking his head as he looked at Scully, she rubbed his arm and smiled.
“Okay,” he said, letting out a deep breath. “Let’s go.”
“Yay!” Faith shouted and they began to trudge up the hill.
It was work reaching the middle of the hill, but flying down together, all of them laughing as Bella chased after them barking excitedly, was more than worth it.
Only on the last trip up, did Mulder give in and pull Faith up the hill as she lay on her back in the sled.
“So, I’ll be tired tonight,” he admitted to Scully, his breathing a little ragged.
“Me too,” she said, her hip feeling sore from tipping out of the sled.
“We have bags of frozen peas, right?”
“And carrots,” she laughed.
“Good. Good,” he said, moaning as he continued to walk up the hill and Faith sang Jingle Bells quietly.
Thirty minutes later, they walked through the front door, all of them pink cheeked and chilly.
Clothes and boots were shed, leaving them in their long underwear and socks. Hot chocolate was made, the rainbow marshmallows floating on the top. Sitting down at the table, they rehashed the day, discussing what they liked best.
Scully watched Faith smile and laugh, a hot chocolate mustache on her face, her legs swinging as she talked about how it felt to fly down the hill in the sled.
Not for the first time, she felt the pang of what was missed and what they had been denied. But that pain that sometimes felt like a heavy weight, was made lighter as Faith reached over and squeezed her hand three times- their silent way of saying I love you.
Squeezing back four times, Faith smiled at her before letting go and scooping a pink marshmallow from her mug with a spoon.
Mulder cleared his throat and Scully glanced at him. His eyebrows went up asking a question without speaking, and she nodded with a smile.
Reaching for her mug, she raised it up.
“A toast,” she said. “To snow days and sledding down hills.”
“To snow days!” Mulder and Faith shouted, lifting their own mugs.
Clinking them together, Faith giggled as she then took a big drink, her chocolate mustache deepening.
“Hey,” he said. “I just wanted to call and say I had a good time tonight.”
“Oh. I did too,” she said and he could hear the smile in her voice. “Did you speed the whole way home? You got there quickly.”
“Not home yet,” he said, shaking his head as he rested his arm on top of the phone box. “I had to pull over and call you.”
“You…” she said and he smiled. “I barely walked in the door. How far did you get from my place?”
“Uh… not too far.”
“Okay.” She chuckled and his smile grew, loving the sound of it.
“I… really enjoyed our date, Dana. I’m glad we could finally make it happen.”
“Me too,” she whispered and he heard a cat meow. “Shhh, quiet Bertie.”
“Oh, you have a cat?”
“I do.”
“I like cats.” Another meow was heard and he chuckled.
“She’s looking for a snack and she won’t be quiet until I get it for her.”
“Then you better do it,” he said and she chuckled.
“Okay. I’ll do that as you drive home.”
“I still have some time left on my dime.”
She laughed and he smiled again.
“Didn’t know you dabbled in poetry,” she said and he heard a bag of something being shaken as the cat meowed again. “Here you go, Bertie Bird.”
“I like to make rhymes. Though not always.” She laughed a deep belly laugh and he chuckled softly, holding his hand over the mouthpiece of the phone.
“You’re very funny, Fox,” she said and he nodded.
“I try,” he said.
“You have thirty seconds left. Insert money for more time.”
“Oh, you better go,” she said.
“Yeah,” he said, wishing he did not have to hang up, but knowing that had been his only dime. “Call you when I get home?”
“Sure,” she said, the smile once again in her voice. “Drive safely.”
“I will. Give Bertie a pat from me.”
“Mmm,” she hummed. “Okay.”
“Bye. I lo-”
The dial tone sounded in his ear and he pulled back with wide eyes.
“Did you really just start to say you love her?” he asked himself as he hung up and stared at the phone. “It’s been one date. Get it together, man.”
He shook his head and exhaled as he walked to his car and got inside. Shaking his head again as he started the car, he hoped he had not scared her off, as he thought of how he could smooth this over.
He need not have worried however.
When he called her as soon as he entered his apartment, his cover story ready, she answered on the first ring.
“The phone company apologizes for the untimely disconnect with your previous phone call,” she said in the nasally tone of the phone company. “We believe we interrupted your sentence and we would like to offer you a chance to finish your conversation. Please, continue.”
He grinned, his plan to lie completely disappearing.
“I was interrupted. But I don’t know if I should continue what I was going to say.”
“We believe you should. We encourage it,” she said in the same nasally tone.
“I love you,” he said quietly, his heart racing. “I know it’s only been one date, but I…”
“It’s been more than that,” she said softly. “We just finally had the opportunity to go out, as we used to say.”
“Yeah,” he agreed, swallowing hard as he knew she was right, their relationship more than just the one date.
“I was thinking about what I would say to you once you called,” she whispered. “Trying to decide if I should brush off what I thought you were going to say. But I didn’t want to do that.”
“Why?”
“Because… I feel the same. I… I love you too. And I know it’s as crazy as you do.”
“Then let’s be crazy together,” he said, flopping down on his couch with a smile.
“Merowwww!”
“Let’s,” she said with a chuckle. “You, me, and Bertie B.”
“Sounds like a plan, man,” he replied and she laughed that belly laugh again, the one he wanted to hear for the rest of his life.
“Who are you?” he asked and even as her heart raced at the fact that he was finally awake, it broke at his words.
“You… you don’t…” she said, her grip on his hand slipping as her stomach sank.
“I’m not… I feel like I should know you…” he rasped, trying to clear his throat.
“No. You…” She shook her head, now completely releasing his hand, wanting to run from the room and get the doctor.
“I… I…”
“You’ve been through an ordeal. An… accident.”
“I have?” he asked, frowning slightly. “I don’t remember it.”
“You were…” She took a deep breath as the baby kicked, causing her to pitch forward slightly. “Let me go get the doctor.”
“What happened to me?”
“The doctor. Let me…”
“No doctors,” he rasped out. “Get me…” He frowned again and shook his head once. “It’s someone I need.”
“The doctor is who you need,” she pleaded, a hand going to her stomach as she wiped her eyes with her other hand. “I’ll be right back.”
“You’re a doctor,” he said, staring at her. “That’s right, isn’t it?”
“I… I am.”
“Then… aren’t you able to help me?”
“Not… Mulder, please…”
“Mulder,” he said, closing his eyes and frowning. “Mulder. Fox…”
“Yes. That’s your name,” she said softly, hope returning as she breathed deeply. “Do you remember?”
“I… I don’t know.”
“Let me get the doctor. Please… Fox…”
“I even made my parents call me Mulder,” he said and her heart stopped beating for a second. He opened his eyes and stared at her. “Is that… have I told you that before?”
“Yes,” she whispered.
“I don’t… it feels familiar.”
“Let me-”
“You’re… on the edges… blurry…” He raised his hand, moving his fingers as if trying to touch his thoughts.
“I’ll be right back. Please let me…” she said, drawing in a deep breath, gripping her stomach as she felt the baby move again.
“I know you… I just…”
“It’s okay. You’ll… we’ll figure it out. Let me get the doctor and we can talk to them. They can… please, Mulder.”
“I want to remember,” he whispered and her eyes filled with tears. “All of the thoughts crowding in my head… knowing you feels like the most important one.”
“I…” She stepped away from the bed and toward the door, his words panging her heart. “I’ll be right back. I have to-”
“Scully,” he said quietly and she stopped with her hand on the door handle. “You’re Scully.”
She turned around and stared at him, tears falling down her face.
“Yes,” she whispered.
“I remember. I remember you.”
“What… what do you remember?” she asked, stepping closer to him, her breathing increasing in anticipation.
“Everything. I remember everything.”
“Everything?” she asked and he nodded, holding his hand out to her. She took it, sniffling quietly as she stepped even closer.
“Everything,” he whispered, squeezing her hand, his eyes searching her face. “You’ve been worried. I can see it in your eyes.” She let out a shaky laugh and closed her eyes as she squeezed his hand.
“I have. I have been very worried,” she breathed, opening her eyes and staring at him, his injuries hurting her heart.
“I should have stayed. Should have…” he whispered. “Should have listened to you. Stayed with you.”
“Mulder…”
“Scully,” he whispered, smiling softly.
“Mulder,” she cried, leaning forward and laying her head on his chest, his heart beating beneath her ear.
“My Scully,” he breathed, fresh tears falling from her eyes and onto his hospital gown as his hand went to her head, his fingers running gently through her hair. “I don’t remember what happened to me, but I know that I missed you… ached for you.”
“God, Mulder,” she cried, her nails pressing into his chest. “Me too. So very much.”
