“No, I don’t mean Steve Jobs,” Anita said to the man on her computer screen who’d just asked her about her hero, wanting to roll her eyes. “Stephen Davies created a 3D-printed prosthetic limb and produced them in his shed to send free of charge to children around the world who need them…” Despite wanting to seem sweet and charming for this interview, there was a visible cringe from the blonde as the interviewer called her a ‘clever girl’. She needed to get away from this condescending interview as fast as she could.
“Oh, look!” she said, turning the computer so the person behind her in the coffee shop was visible on the screen. “My friend has arrived, I’ve got to go! Thank you for your time,” she said, shutting the laptop screen. “Sorry to hijack your coffee order, I just really needed to get away from that. He asked me if I’m studying fashion design or women’s studies. As though there was no other option for me.” She shuddered. “Can I buy you a coffee for being my hero?”
Atticus just barely had the chance to shoot the girl in front of him a confused look and hold up his hand to greet the man on her screen before her laptop suddenly snapped closed — which only helped to confuse him further. He’s definately not awake enough for whatever’s going on, but he’s not about to turn down her offer either. “I have no idea what I did, but... yeah, okay.” He said, hand coming up to run though his hair. “Sounds like it was a productive meeting.”
“ tell me why pike weekend always has to land on the same weekend that i have to study for a big ass exam. pike boys are out here trying to fuck up my GPA, i swear. ”

little did atticus know, he’d just stumbled into peak stoned indigo hours. or actually, he probably did know, given how fast she was making her way through her two orders of mozzarella sticks. thank god recruitment was over, because pictures in white dresses would not have looked as good after what she’d just put into her body. “ it’s all about money, ” she began, dunking another mozzarella stick into some marinara sauce, “ if you think about it, today, anyone can be a news reporter, straight from the comfort of their twitter account. and that means that if you’re a news channel or a newspaper, you’re slowly but surely becoming obsolete, and suddenly you have to compete with locals who’re on the scene by sensationalising everything and telling everyone you know more about everything. ” she paused for a second, allowing herself a few seconds of downtime to bite off a piece of fried mozzarella. “ journalists are still super important, don’t get me wrong, but i really think money’s fucked up the media and the way the news gets delivered. — that, and the fact that the president needs wild stories to cover up every single thing he’s ever done in his life. ”
atticus didn’t raise an eyebrow until he’d finished most of his own food and indigo had already started in on round two of her mozzarella sticks — though he can’t say he’s all that surprised. he knows her well enough to know that she’s either high or hungover. not that it matters much, either way it makes for entertaining conversation. “ exactly. who needs some guy who obviously spent more on the suit he’s wearing than you spend in rent every month and talking like he’s better than you telling you what’s what when there’s people on the internet telling you the same thing, while actually looking like a normal human being and calling the president a shitbag? i mean, we’re all thinking it. ” he shrugged and picked up a few stray french fries from his plate, reaching across the table to dip them in indigo’s marinara sauce. “ don’t even get me started on those stories. what i wanna know if why the big name journalists need these nothing stories to make the guy look bad? i don’t care that he resorts to playground insults when he doesn’t get his way. he’s literally trying to start world war three. ”

* ･ ♛ ˙ ˖ ✶ –– tai glanced at the other. she surprisingly wasn’t hungover, but she wasn’t in the right mind either. for her, it was still far too early to get into talks like such– something most tried to stay away from, especially with the nation’s newest president and all of the antics that followed him. “i don’t think all of it is bullshit, but they do, without a doubt, enjoy covering up the truth. i think news, as much as anything in the media, has its own agenda. every news channel has their own beliefs and shows what they deem as the most important thing that happened. weather it’s fueling people’s ideas of black culture or nature, showing us nonsense tweets instead of what’s happening with our laws, or just entertaining us with puppies and babies.”
"not all of it, but enough that it’s almost impossible to tell when they’re telling the truth and when they’re just making up fairy stories or spewing propaganda.” he paused, forcing himself to stop and really think before going off on another loaded tangent about that. atticus might always be ready ( and maybe a little too eager ) to talk political shop, but if he’s going to open a can of worms like american media propaganda, he’s gonna need at least two more cups of coffee. “that’s exactly what’s bullshit, though. presenting a story as objective facts, but not making their bias clear. at least they could open up with ‘oh, by the way, our parent company throws all this money at the moron we’re gonna tell you about for the next hour.’”

“wait, so you mean to tell me kylie jenner isn’t really pregnant? wild,” her eyes grew wide, even though her tone was dripping with sarcasm. ronnie didn’t really watch or read the news apart from trash celebrity news websites. it wasn’t that she actively checked them, but those stories interested her, even though most of the time, she knew they were bullshit. but, it was something entertaining to read when she wanted to avoid studying. “i never really know what to believe, so that’s why i don’t really watch the news that much. sounds like the company president’s got a pretty sick job, though.”
atticus managed to bite back an exasperated groan, couldn’t hold back from rolling his eyes. he shook his head, taking just a second to collect himself before taking a deep breath and reaching out to gently lay his hand on top of hers. “i’m afraid that’s probably bullshit, babe. i’m sorry.” the look on his face matched the sincerity in his voice almost to a t until the expression collapsed into a laugh. “can’t trust nothing or nobody these days. but hey — who needs journalistic integrity when you can have a superyacht?”

an eyebrow raised as cooper looked up briefly from his book. he hadn’t asked him, though what he hadn’t asked him was still beyond him… the male’s head nodded slowly as his eyes stayed locked on the other, his book still open in front of him. “ i mean, i can’t really argue with you on that. every media outlet reports the same story in a solid fifteen different ways. i find it’s sometimes best to read them all and piece together shit myself, ” he shrugged, glancing down at the book, cooper let out an overdramatic sigh and closed it. “ how do you consume your news, atticus? ”
“exactly. it’s all the same half-story with whatever self-serving spin the person telling it wants it to have.” a half smile tugged at his lips until the book sitting in front of cooper suddenly closed. atticus’ eyes flicked down to it, only then realizing that it was even there and that his little outburst has probably interrupted something. but then again, it’s not his fault that someone two tables down had to mention msnbc. “from the source when it’s possible,” he shrugged, looking back to cooper. “when it’s not, i try find a couple independent journalists from both sides. something close to facts are usually somewhere in the middle.”
“see, if you ask me,” ( for the record — nobody asked him. ) atticus paused briefly to lean forward, settle into his seat with his elbows on the table like he doesn’t have any intention of moving anytime soon. and that listening to what he had to say wasn’t really a choice. “everything on the news is total bullshit. i mean, sprinkle in a little truth here and there so people don’t catch on, sure. but it’s all sensationalized to hell and back to either keep people distracted from what’s really going on or a fairy tale someone pulled out of their ass to keep people watching long enough for the company president to buy another mansion with the ad rev.”
