This is advice I am now taking to heart for both GMing and my adventure stories.

Xenonauts, and one little thing I like...

In Xenonauts, you fight against an unknown alien force bent on killing off humanity. You have to send infantry that get killed by superior alien technology, and then you have to manage your organization as it builds bases, creates new weapons, and researches the alien threat. Sound familiar? It's the premise of UFO: Enemy Unknown / X-COM: UFO Defense, but replace the 1990s with the Cold War setting, and you get Xenonauts.

There's a little thing in the Geoscape interface, and it's the number of casualties that Earth suffers. As the game goes on, that number keeps on rising up. Later on in the game, the number of humans killed goes beyond a thousand. It creates a sense of despair in a sense that you began to ask this: In the end of the alien war, how many humans had to suffer in the hands of the aliens? It also creates a sense of determination, in which you have to respond to the alien threat as it escalates in order to prevent more casualties. It's gripping how much is at stake, and if you lose? Say goodbye to humanity.
