I love my students' families

We had end of year conferences this week, and at one we discussed how to handle Kiddo's abundant energy and sensory needs when they get to kindergarten.

Kiddo is sensory-seeking, and we were discussing ways for Kiddo to get sensory input in a more classroom-appropriate way.

And I just realized that I'd suggested a bumpy bracelet to fiddle with, and they had a bracelet by Thursday. Three days later. And Kiddo was fiddling with it non-stop.

This family is so warm and thoughtful and we've been working together all year to get Kiddo to a place where they can be in a classroom, following instructions and participating in a positive and reasonably controlled manner.

And I'm SO PROUD of Kiddo, but also so impressed by the parents, who have rolled with this amazing, high-energy kid and gotten them involved with EVERY SPORT EVER. Kiddo is going to be so happy.

I love this kid. I love their parents. I wish they could be my student forever.

do y'all even know how much i hate being an "elder queer" at 40? a whole goddamn generation before me was wiped out by a plague that politicians deemed not their problem bc it was killing the "right" people. like. this was OPENLY STATED. i spent a large chunk of my childhood going to funerals. nevermind the fact that killing queer people for being queer wasn't codified into law as a hate crime until i was a junior in high school.

i should NOT be an elder queer, i should be middle at most. i am a middle aged queer. most of the elder queers died.

when i was growing up i didn't go to pride parades, i went to pride marches. because that's 100% what they were in the 80s and 90s.

from the absolute bottom of my heart, LEARN OUR FUCKING HISTORY. a generation was nearly wiped out so you young queers could be here. don't let that have been in vain, please.

We’re not all gone. Some of us survived. Those funerals OP went to as a child? My friends and I were the ones arranging them.

I was always kind of grateful that the marches slowly became parades. That the protests slowly gave way to parties. It was progress, it was healing.

I was grateful for that because I never healed.

I’m still remembering how straight society turned their collective backs on us and let us die. I will never forgive or forget that. Maybe that’s a shortcoming on my part but it’s true. I’ve tried and I can’t. That scar runs too deep.

And now we’re back to the same shit again. Straight society is turning their backs on my trans brothers and sisters. Ignoring their pain. Trying to legislate them out of existence.

Even our so-called allies are saying shit like “well if we want to appeal to a broader base we can’t keep going on about the transgender thing.” Fuck you Gavin Newsom. In particular.

Make no mistake: they want us dead. Not just closeted, not just silent. Gone. Non-existent. And I say us because they’re just starting with the trans people. They’ll come after the rest of us if they succeed.

I am old and so, so tired.

But I’m alive. And I’m not going anywhere.

Deadline: Nathan Fillion Says ‘Firefly’ Animated Series In Development With Co-Stars Set To Reprise Roles; Concept Art Revealed

TL;DR: It's an animated series and Joss Whedon has given his blessing, but he is not directly involved in the project.

Today, Sunday, March 15th 2026, Nathan Fillion and the remaining core crew of Serenity announced at Awesome Con in DC that they are bringing back Firefly as an animated series called Firefly: Still Flyin'.

In the video posted on the Once We Were Spacemen (OWWS) Instagram account, Nathan detailed what they would need and who has signed on to the project thus far:

The rights from 20th Century Fox/ Disney: "They got excited - they said yes"

Showrunners: a married couple who met through Firefly! Tara Butters (Dollhouse, Agent Carter, Reaper) and Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow)

In the video, Nathan goes on to say that the last thing they need is a home. He asks everyone to like, comment on, and tag your friends in this post to spread the word and get Firefly: Still Flyin' a home.

While it was not explicitly stated in Nathan's video, Deadline's article on the announcement states:

"Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project."

Boston Pride ‘96 | Carla Osberg

In 1996, the Boston chapter of the Lesbian Avengers pushed a bed along the route of Boston Pride. During the march, members climbed on the bed and kissed and caressed through the streets. The goal was to create a blatant image of lesbian sexuality for public consumption as both an artistic and a political act, and make a statement about dominant hetero-normative rhetoric surrounding sex and sexuality.

The act caused a scandal, now known as "bedgate” which led to Pride organizers, news outlets, and even the mayor of Boston denouncing it as “distasteful and irresponsible”. The Boston Dyke March commission released a statement following the backlash, asserting “When we permit straights in suits to define us, chastise us or credit our good behavior, we lose power and the qualities that make us beautiful.”

So my punkass cat loves the texture of paper on her teeth. She bites cardboard, she bites the mail, she bites bills and to-do lists, knitting patterns and business cards.

But her most recent discovery is HP and the Philosopher's Stone, the very tall version translated into Chinese. I kept it BECAUSE it's a translation and I don't have many books in Chinese (two cookbooks, an autobiography, my textbooks, and this) even though I gave away the rest of my HP books.

A few months before he passed away in 2003, a 74 year old children’s television host sat down in the same studio where he had filmed 895 episodes over 33 years and recorded one last message. It wasn’t for children. It was for the adults who had grown up watching him.

Fred Rogers hosted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on American public television from 1968 to 2001. For over three decades he walked into the same set, changed into a cardigan and sneakers, looked directly into the camera, and spoke to children as if each one of them was the only person in the room. He never raised his voice, never talked down to his audience, and never rushed a single moment.

In that final recording, he looked into the camera one last time and said “I’m just so proud of all of you who have grown up with us. And I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on the months and years ahead. But I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are.”

He passed away from stomach cancer on February 27, 2003. He was 74.

he takes a moment in which his face is not like a person's face. "there was a time," he says, "i'm not sure how long, years. when i went to a funeral every weekend." he tells you about two funerals in a day, and choosing between friends when you couldn't make it to both. he does not look at you, he looks at them. his wet grey gaze is so clear that you start to see ghosts. it will be years before you understand why it feels like your grief too. why the ghosts call you family.

when i wrote this post, i didn't expect very many people to read it. i figured it wasn't the kind of thing people liked to read and reblog, but it was late at night, and i was remembering this person, and i was crying, and i had to write it out. so i did.

to this day no other post gets sent to me so often by friends who have encountered it as a repost on some other site. the idea that more than one hundred thousand people have read these words, and know this story now, and maybe feel as i did, is tremendously humbling and unbearably beautiful to me. even by accident, even just passing on a story that is not my own, i often think that it is the best thing i have ever done.

So my coworker either doesn't know or doesn't care about the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation-

(essentially: intrinsic- wanting to do it for yourself, extrinsic- motivated by someone else)

-and she's been giving her kids prizes and candy when they do something right. All. year. long. Her kids finish the day with lollipops and bubbles and stickers, and my kids do not.

I'm trying to teach intrinsic motivation- doing the work and following the rules because it leads to success. (I put my shoes on all by myself! I read the whole sentence! I was the first one done cleaning up!)

Because extrinsic motivation only works as long as there's someone motivating you, and when someone stops offering you prizes, you no longer have the ability to motivate yourself.

But I look like a meanie to my students, because the OTHER kids get candy. Why don't I give them candy?

Anyways, I promised my kids candy for the last day of school. They deserve it.

Okay so as someone who has read his book "Cliffhanger":

It's absolutely a love story for art museum curation. Wow, did this guy love his time working with art museum collections. I learned some things.

The race aspect of his book is... not subtle. Alex White is albino, Xander Browne is black.

The supernatural element is belabored, for no actual supernatural payoff

They do in fact get together in the end. Big happy ending.

It's kind of sweet

It's also kind of weird. Like if you think about it it's totally justified, it's fine. But it's weird. :\

Yeah the relationship is between two art history specialists, and much as the vampire book deals with furniture, this book deals with a bowl that crosses art history specialties. We learn a lot about this bowl, and about how people study items like this. It was no surprise to look at Grant's bio and find out he had worked in art museums in the past.

My favorite part was the older uncle. Reminded me of people in my own family.

Had the end of year parent-teacher conferences today.

It was a big love fest. I love all the kids, the parents obv. love their kids, and the kids have grown so much this year. The parents are so supportive of their kids, and there's really only one family where I'm like, "Your kid would be doing BETTER if you sent him to SCHOOL more often!"

So we all just had a "you're so great, thank you for supporting kiddo this year" fest over video. I think I just had a phenomenal first class, with phenomenal families.

We've got a little more yet to go, but the year is basically done now. This week we're talking about emotions, making friends, and reading The Book With No Pictures (honestly one of my favorite children's books for reading to emerging readers).

(My kids are almost all starting to read, and this book really encourages reading while also being very, very funny.)
