Gossip spread like fire at Hogwarts, and it absolutely infuriated (Y/N).
The two weeks following the Yule Ball were filled with constant chatter and rumor spreading. Apparently, a lot went down after her and Draco escaped the dance. Some couples broke up, some got together. In the end, there was a lot to be talked about.
One of those rumors sadly happened to be about them. A fifth year spotted them outside the Prefects Bathroom that night and got creative when retelling the story to his friends.
All week, her classmates teased her and called her 'Mrs. Malfoy' to set her off. But she didn't give in, and only laughed along with them.
(Y/N) thought that if she didn't satisfy them with a reaction, they'd stop sooner. Draco seemed to be the complete opposite, almost getting into a few duels when he overheard a couple of sixth year Ravenclaws gossiping about us.
But after the two weeks went by, there was barely anymore talk about the ball. At that point, everyone just got bored and went back to their normal lives.
Life didn't just go back to normal for (Y/N), though. Ever since the student body began accusing them of being together, things got awkward. And quickly.
When they hung out on the Astronomy Tower, they would only talk for half an hour then leave. She hated how standoffish he had been. Draco let the rumors get in his head, she assumed, and it was completely wrecking their friendship.
"Draco," (Y/N) greeted him.
It was sunset, as usual, when they met up on the tower again. Today, her plan was to put an end to this strained friendship, and figure out why her best friend was so affected by the gossip.
"Hey," He said, not looking up. Draco scribbled down his homework busily, not paying her much attention.
"I think we should talk," She said. After catching his attention, he looked away from his assignment.
"About?" He said, feigning ignorance.
"I think you know what it's about," (Y/N) replied, "Ever since the Yule Ball rumors started, you've been acting weird."
Draco closed his fists uncomfortably, breaking eye contact. He started to respond, but no words came out. He stopped, trying to think of what to say while the girl beside him grew impatient and things quickly grew heated.
"You know, you don't have to let it get to you," She continued, beginning her ramble, "Who cares what they think? I mean, why do people assuming we're together make you so uncomfortable? It's really not a big deal, and we're great as friends so why does it matter--"
"It's because I actually do have feelings for you!" Draco cut her off, "And you've spent the last two weeks laughing about it, so forgive me if I felt rejected, (Y/N)." He burst, speaking quickly.
She was taken aback, a confession being the last thing she expected to hear.
"Draco," She said quieter, "I had no idea."
"Just save it," He said, picking up his textbooks so he could leave.
"Hold on, wait!" She stood up, walking over to him. "You're not even going to hear what I have to say?" She asked, staring up at Draco directly.
"If you're making me stay just to hear some pointless apology, don't bother, okay? It isn't going to help." He deadpanned, his hand gripping the book bag strap slung onto his shoulder.
"Apologize?" (Y/N) questioned, "I'm not trying to apologize to you, I'm trying to yell at you for being so thick!"
"What?" He stood there, stunned.
"Who do you think I wanted to go to the Yule Ball with, you half wit? Draco, I've had the biggest crush on you for the longest time and I swear to Merlin, it's like you're blind. You could've just told me instead of spending two whole weeks making me wonder what I did wrong." (Y/N) finished her rant, now pink-cheeked from getting too worked up.
"I didn't know," He said, still in shock.
"Of course you didn't know. Because you're thick, like I said!" She said, thunking him on the forehead with her fingers.
Breaking into a soft smile, Draco regathered himself and set his hands over her forearms, preventing her from doing it again. "You like me." He said simply, like stating a fact.
She rolled her eyes, caving in and wrapping her arms around his torso. "You're an idiot, and you set me off." She muttered, making him laugh.
(Y/N) peeked her head up, "But yes, I like you." She admitted, "A lot."
Draco grinned, dipping down to press a kiss on her forehead before routinely ruffling her hair. "Me too." He responded, admiring the way she smiled back at him.
Her face dropped slightly, "You're still annoying, though. And I'm still mad about this." She added.
He just chuckled, using his hand to bring her head closer to his chest. "We'll just have to make up for lost time." He said.
(Y/N) liked that idea, "Movie night?"
"You read my mind."
