Final Project - Chauveau Audrey
Today, I would like to talk about something that really stroke me when I arrived in the US. I wanted to buy some girls products as tampons, and hygienic towels. But then I saw the price of it. It was really very expensive. But can I go without it? Absolutely not. I know that in France, feminists fought against something called the ‘Pink Tax’. It is a tax that is only applied on feminine products, such as makeup remover, razors, hygienic towels and so forth. But then I looked at such products and actually it was not only tampons and hygienic towels, but every single product that is destined to women is expensive. I talked about that to my roommates then because they are also foreigners. They told me that they were also shocked by the prices. I think that is it crazy that in such a developed country women have to pay so much just to be able to live as any other normal women. I know that a campaign to provide tampons and towels was launched at the beginning of the year. It think that it was destined to homeless women. I understand now why such campaign are launch but I have to say that the word hasn’t been very well relied. And I think it shows once again the discrimination that is being done towards women.

This article is about the French national miss pageant. It is going to be broadcast on Saturday. I have been watching this contest since I am very little and I have to say that what those feminists denounce in this article is true. The contest is very old and things haven’t changed a lot. It is all about the physic and not about being smart or being talented. The manager of the contest defends herself by saying that today, the miss have to pass a test to be allowed to continue to run for the title. Indeed, I did the test, and I have to say that it is not complicated. What kind of example does it give to five years old girls who are watching this with their parents? That being pretty is the only thing that matters? More, this pageant is also about competition. Thus, girls have to stay together for a month also they know that only one of them will be chosen at the end. I think that it also conveys the idea that girls can have no friend. Because competition is everywhere. I am sure than unconsciously it has an impact on social relationship between girls. In France it is forbidden, but I know that in the US, this kind of contests are also adapted to little girls. In France, it has been forbidden because of the violence of it.

This video shows different type of things. We are told about the ever lasting problem of women trying to be as magazines tell them to be, but it is also about race and self-esteem. Victoria’s secret is a big company which sells underwear. Every year a show is organized and the most popular models of the moment can walk wearing those expensive panties. On the other hand, BuzzFeed, a news website decided to create its own fashion show to denounce the fact that what we are being shown is no the reality. First, we should talk about the race. Almost every girl in this show are white. So there we have a race problem. Second, because they are model, they are very skinny. And thus, it poses a problem. BuzzFeed, I think wanted to denounce the fat-shamming of women. Finally, this show was supposed to give women, who do not feel confident, a chance to see that they worth something, and that even though they do not look like models, they worth something. It was a way to say to all the girls around the world that it is ok not to look like the girls from the magazines and that they should embrace who they are.

This article show that mentalities might be changing in Saudi Arabia. This country is ruled by the laws of the charia, is said to apply what is written in the sacred book which is the Coran and extremely against any kind of freedom for women. According to their interpretation of the Coran, any woman is supposed to wear the veil and needs to obey her husband. But wanting to let them drive is kind of a great improvement. Because in everybody’s mind, being able to drive is the key to freedom. But in a very conservative Middle-East, we can also talk about how much the rights of women are trampled in a country as Iran. In this country women have to wear the complete outfit, through out no one can see either her eyes or her mouth. Even though the situation of women is a getting a little better, the improvements are not that great. I remember hearing last year that because girls in Iran had shot a movie clip, they had been sentenced to jail. I think that even though the rights of women in the Middle-East is evolving, the situation of women in Middle-East is still really bad. And the political situation especially with the threat of ISIS, doesn’t allow any kind of improvement, on the contrary.
Today I went to the demonstration and I took this picture. I know it was supposed to be only about immigrants but I knew that it would be more than that. After the Paris attacks in January 2015, I went to the demonstration with my dad in Paris. It was supposed to be about « Charlie Hebdo » a newspaper but everybody knew that it was more than that. It was about freedom of speech and actually just freedom. When I arrived I was happy to see that it was not only focused on immigrant. This « anti-Trump » demonstration is more than that. It is about racism and not being afraid of who you are. I saw a lot of anti-racist slogans and a lot of anger and fear. Donald Trump shouldn’t have been elected but what he proposes it so crazy that it seems impossible. I truly hope it will be because people shouldn’t fear anything today. I have to admit that being a girl is the only thing « wrong » about me according to Trump. I have to admit that I have never face any kind of racism. But because it doesn’t touch me doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do anything. That is why I went to the march today. I come from a country where marches are pretty common but I do think that sometimes it has an impact.
"I'm just going to sew my mouth & labia shut right now."
I think Trump’s election as a president is going to have a worst impact that we thought it would already be. This article is one of the many that I have seen on the social media. First, we need to speak about what Clinton said in her speech, that is women should know that they worth it and that they should continue to fight for what they believe in. The most astonishing thing is that she was addressing herself to little girls. Because she know that this election is going to touch badly an entire generation. Second, I heard from a lot of friends that the minorities such as migrants, but also gender communities as LGBT are really scared at the moment. We can see the importance of this panic wave especially when we know that the Canadian immigration website was shut down due to too many visits at the same time. I don’t know what the future of America will be but I know that Trump’s impact on America is going to change the world.
L’action, lancée par un collectif féministe, vise à dénoncer les inégalités salariales entre hommes et femmes.
I know that this article is not based on what we studied this week but I think it is important that I talk about this. Last week I wrote about a movement that was rising in Island about the pay gap between men and women. They decided to stop working at a particular hour and this hour symbolized from when they were starting to work for free compared to men. And today I saw that a group of feminists launched the same call in France. Apparently, the pay gap rises almost 16% in France, but it only is an average. It depends on the job, the company you are working for, your degree most of the time, and so on. I did my researches on the feminist group who is lunching the call and it doesn’t seem to be very radical. Actually this group is doing the same job as we do in class, and the group is talking about typical French problems as street harassment. I think it means that a kind of revolution is starting. I am wondering if this is going to spread in other European countries as well. And I hope so because, anyway it is great news I think.
Even in Iceland, the country many experts consider the world’s leader in gender equity, the gender pay gap persists. Women employees make 14 to 18 percent less than men in Iceland — a d…
As it is stated, Iceland is a good place for women to live in. But the inequalities are still there. It is not normal that in 2016, a woman earns at least 14 % less than a man. I think we should underline the fact that in many countries, there are laws to prohibit that but that it is still going on. I can relate it to the situation in France, because I know it better. A woman is always going to earn less, even though she works for state. Which I think is completely crazy. If the organism who is supposed to respect the laws the most isn’t protecting women, why should the private organizations do it? But I think that the problem is bigger. Yes, women earn less than men, but they also have less chances to get a job. And most of the time they do not say anything, because they do need it. The job market is so bad at the moment, that they don’t have any choices but to sign the contract. But I think it is a good sign that women, especially in Iceland, a northern country, which has a very good reputation, walk down the street to denounce that. Because a lot of people think that feminism is dead. But it isn’t. Today, and that is what we lean in this class, feminists are very actives on the Internet. Only methods are changing And this preconceived idea that feminism is over influences the behavior of companies into keeping and often increasing inequalities between men and women.
“When I saw women role models, it broadened my vision.”
I think this article is very inspiring. We know that the condition of girls in Middle-East countries is very bad. And we also know that Malala has been through a lot. She had survived murder attempts and won a Nobel Peace Prize. I think she has done in her life more than a lot of girls. Of course her status allows her to do more. She is more exposed to media and so her voice has a greater impact than mine for instance. But on the other hand, I think that she is putting herself in danger for the women cause, and especially for women in the Middle-East, and that is very important. It reminds me of the hashtag that we discussed in class about the fat that feminism is only for white women. I don’t know if her call to vote for her as Prime Minister is going to be heard but I think that the only fact she can do that is already very important when we know that for example in France, one of the most democratic countries in the world the election of a women as Prime Minister happened once and only for one month.

I think that this article is important because it shows that on one way, women are not afraid to talk about sexual assault anymore. But on the other hand it is sad to see that sexual assaults on women keep going on. I think that even if if we can say that Trump is one of the worst person ever, this denunciation is also a political move. And Trump is probably going to use this argument in his next meeting to shut it down. So even if denouncing that kind of behavior is primordial, they shouldn’t have done it that way because it diminishes its importance. However, I think it is important especially in this class to talk about the hashtag that is used by women, who were victims of sexual assaults and who want to tell Trump and probably to the world that sexual assault is a crime, period. I know that especially on American campuses sexual assaults are « common » if I could say. I watch a very interesting documentary called « Terrain de Chasse » which depicts what is happening in the American universities and shows that more and more women try to make that change. So I am hoping that things are going to change, specially thanks to campaigns as NotAnymore but the fight isn’t won at all.
Thousands of Poles, many dressed in black, rallied Saturday in front of parliament in Warsaw to protest a proposed bill that would impose a complete ban on abortion.
I think that this article shows the decline of Europe. The #BlackProtest movement was created to protect one of the woman right, which is abortion. On Monday, the protest against the ban on abortion reunited thousands of women, who wore black. Since the demonstration happened, more and more citizens are actually pro-abortion in Poland. In Poland, the right to abortion is already very restricted. You can use your right only in case of rape, incest or potential case of danger for the women or for the baby. But, despite those very sharp conditions, the most extreme right political party and the Church want to forbid abortion totally. Fortunately, the law project has been rejected today. I think we can relate this anti-woman law to the rise of the extreme powers in Europe that are rising rapidly. Countries tend to reply on themselves and seem to go backwards, especially when it comes about questions such as gender or family.
Peaceful protesters crowded Charlotte's first city council meeting since the cop shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, with over 50 people speaking out against police violence. But none of them stood out Monday quite as much as a young girl. Zianna Oliphant, her hair done up in braids and tears...
We must denounce racism. But I don’t think that implying a little girl in this is the best solution. On one hand, it is a good way to have people’s attention. Seeing a little girl crying and saying with simple words what everybody thinks is more appealing than if it has been done by a grown-up. But I think that making a child speaking of what she lives for this purpose should not be acceptable. Living this situation is hard enough I don’t think they should have all of the media’s pressure on their shoulder. On the other hand, I think it shows how much the Black community is struggling to make its voice heard. And this is to me the most shocking part of the video. It’s hard for me to believe that in 2016, some people are still fighting for their rights and that they are doing that for almost a hundred years now. We can just hope that the elections are going to emphasize movement such as #blacklivesmatter.

I think this video is a good example of the social problems we still face today, sometimes even despite laws. This video shows that women aren’t really respected as women but that they are treated just as tools. They are less paid than men. Plus, women aren’t paid the same as other women for the same job. This is a good example of intersectionality. In the video, it is not only question about money, we can clearly see that women are discriminated at the intellectual level too. It is a fact that for the same qualifications, the women will not only be paid less but will have lower chance to get the job. This video is a satirical way to denounce this injustice.
