Dwarven Design Appreciation Posts | 1 of 5: Patterns
My first reaction was - Oooh, pretty!
Then - so much geometric design @_@
Which lead to the thought of - wait, wouldn’t the dwarves be huge geometry geeks? They are engineers at heart, and that’s reflected in their art style. I kinda want to see a fic now where Bilbo is sort of rolling his eyes at the rough-and-tumble dwarves only to have them blow his mind with advanced mathematics that he can’t begin to follow. Like, someone like Dwalin or Bofur is a total math wiz, even amongst dwarves, and he’s maybe trying to work out how the whole pine-tree-over-the-cliff thing must have worked and Thorin kinda sidles up to add his two cents but is trying not to show how excited he is to be doing calculations again instead of stabbing things, and before you know it the entire company is geeking out over equations and Bilbo realizes that poor liberal arts/geography student that he is he has NO IDEA WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT.
OH MY GOD AVELERA PLEASE WRITE THIS it’s such a good idea! Why did no one think of this before? Maybe it’s an attractive trait for the dwarves, like, apart from fighting and forging, being a maths genius makes all the dwarf girls/boys swoon? Instead of whispering sweet nothing’s into your beloved’s ear it’s like talk long division to me, baby
Reason #265 I might be a dwarf:
I have the heart of an artist and the mind of an engineer. (in art school my nickname was MIT, hehe)
#SHRIEKS SHRIEKS SHRIEKS #YES #i hate it when people characterize the dwarves as like dumb angry fighters or whatever #they love music and stories and art #their art might not be like you’re art #it’s very geometric and bold and stuff #but they clearly love this shit #and they’re fantastic fucking engineers #to build fucking erebor under the mountain #did you SEE the shots of erebor #of course they’re good at math #dwaaarves #(i have a dwarf problem shutting up now) #the hobbit
THIS IS GOOD AND EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THIS POST SHOULD FEEL GOOD.
#look at their art though #LOOK AT THEIR ART #and dwarves and math #and dwarves and engineering #I want to know more about dwarf-doors #not just the magic that renders them invisible when closed #(though please tell me more about that yes ugh) #but the way they lock #in ways far more complicated than a simple bolt #the way some of those residences seemed to hang from the ceiling of the cavern #I want to see dwarves getting excited over scale models and prototypes and drafting paper #and the hydraulics or whatever it is that powers those fuckoff huge pendulum-hammers #dwarves dwarves dwarves dwarves dwarves #and their art though #!!!!!!! #my first love
YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST
math!dwarves and ereborean engineering and dwarven science art and durin!tech and just… omg this fandom = the best fandom /joyful sobbing/ these headcanons are giving me so much life right now because seriously have you looked at the ereborean throne room and all those semi floating walkways they have? (though I don’t really get how there aren’t a hundred deaths a season due to people falling off, but then again they might just have magnetic boots heh) if anything that is some expert understanding of statics at least
Lets not forget Physics!Bofur using a wee sausage to DISMANTLE AGE OLD ELF FURNITURE. Off to draw magnetic boots and water clocks for these furry little nerds. Who wants to bet they have some form of hydroelectricity too?
Bofur’s a toymaker though, imagine the kind of toys he could make!
All this. What a wonderful post.

Richard Armitage about Thorin & Co. [7/8]
[Thorin] is cantankerous and often cross. I found this characteristic interesting and, at the beginning, it was a bit hard for me to determine where it sprang from. I’d say this surly and aggressive side is something all the warrior dwarves share, but Thorin, on top of that, cant stand the thought that he’s been stripped of his kingdom in such a violent way. In addition, he’s suffered the loss of his rank in the dwarf society, going from the privileged status of a royal family member to that of a wandering warrior. He’s ashamed of such a decline..
There and shit again

Richard Armitage about Thorin and Co. (4/8)
You know, when a dwarf starts running it takes a long time to stop. They’re very heavy, very stooped trains. They can’t stop immediately. Like, they’ll crash through a wall. Their bone structure is heavy and solid. And those huge boots, which I think are going to be a big fashion statement next year.
