any language you care to mention has an implicit corresponding accent in every other language, even if that pair of languages never coexisted. like, if the aztecs had learned english, they would have a way that they spoke it, influenced by their phonology and grammar and all, the same way yknow, germans and chinese and indian and mexicans do. "sumerian-accented english" never existed, but there is a correct answer to "if the sumerians had learned english, how would they have spoken it?". the romans! imagine, a roman accent! the romance languages produce pretty different accents today, so presumably its not like any of those. but for particularly well-studied dead languages, this is maybe an answerable question?

My favourite thing along these lines is that Irish accents are what happens when an Irish speaker learns English. There aren't all that many first-language Irish speakers any more, but monolingual English speakers from Ireland still retain the same patterns in their accents.

This makes me wonder how many other native-speaker accents have the same history. The Cumbric language has been extinct for 900 years but maybe I've been speaking Cumbric-accented English all this time without knowing it.

there's a p common attitude in fandom spaces (fandom in general, not a specific one) that's like "why care about canon, or the characters being ooc? we're here to play with the dolls any way we like" and as much as i obviously am a person who thinks about canon a lot in theory i'm into that. in practice though when popular fanon takes things in a wildly different direction from canon so often it's in the service of taking something that was originally canonically weird and interesting and making it blander. it's flattening a complex character into a broad archetype i've seen a million times before, it's taking two characters with a complicated canonical relationship and writing them in a way where you could find-and-replace the names with any other popular migratory slash fandom pairing and the fic would make as much if not more sense. if you're going to break away from canon at least do something interesting? don't make it less weird? i feel like i'm watching someone take a really beautiful expensive cut of wagyu steak and grind it into hamburger to cook it well done and cover it in ketchup

A couple weeks ago I’m going to get lunch and as I open the fridge, my mother attempts to communicate to me that any chicken currently in the fridge is ok for people to eat, because the chicken that was intended for the dog to eat has been used up.

What she actually says is, “That’s human chicken.”

After taking a minute to process all horrible implications of the phrase “human chicken”, I decide to go a different route and hold the tupperware of chicken out to my sister, saying, “Behold, a man!”

This was evidently the wrong choice, as it meant I had to explain to my parents who Diogenes was, thereby cementing the incident in their minds and leading to me, just now, opening the fridge to see the following incredibly cursed image:
