Ok but the S5 finale absolutely CEMENTED my liking for Alexander Blake. Not because of the turnaround 'would you like to come in' at the end, although that was adorable.

He got her a book on forensics.

William was fine and all but he never actually encouraged Eliza's passion for detective work, and was even hostile about her ambition on occasion. I was sad to see him go, but honestly the couple made no sense. Sometimes love just isn't enough.

Meanwhile, Blake, who has been here a few short months (?) in show time recognizes Eliza's talent so much so that on a whim he buys her a book that pertains to her interests. Even the fact that he won't really hire her services is well done. It never mattered that Eliza is a woman, only that she's a private detective.

If this is the way things are going, I'm not mad at all.

hi!

some of y'all may recognise me from when season 4 was all the rage and the news about stuart leaving the show was fresh. well, guess who finally got around to watching season 5? yes, tis i. (only episode one so far, though)

i love stuart, and william as well (when he wasn't being misogynistic and dense), i really do, but i'm also very grateful he left the show, because it was the right choice. it's sweet that william invited eliza to nyc, but i could never see eliza take the offer of being a superintendent's stay-at-home wife. even if i do find the prospect of eliza visiting him in nyc quite appealing. and perhaps heartbreaking, presuming he's gonna build a life there, with a new woman, new men, maybe even children of his own.

not sure about blake yet. i admit, i skipped over their first meeting with eliza cause i sensed it would bear the very opposite fruit to what eliza was probably hoping (seducing him maybe? i really don't know cause i haven't seen it). was really surprised he has a kid?! is it his kid? what. seems cute so far, i like it.

ah patrick, how i love ya. he almost made me cry then made my laugh during the very last scene. they have more of a sibling vibe this season, i think. which i'm also liking, i just hope that the creators won't try writing a romance between eliza and blake. i want eliza happy in her community, but not necessarily married just so we can have a romantic storyline, ya know?

hello!

sooo i finished season 5 today. i'm back to fulfil my threat of rambling some more.

i'll miss patrick, so much. i hope he makes a brief visit or even a full return later on. i really liked her sibling energy with eliza (even if i ship/used to ship them [haven't made up my mind about that past tense yet]).

i read that ansu kabia would be returning in season 6, which i'm really excited about! i love moses

remember how i was hoping the creators would leave eliza single for a bit? well, i still wish they'd done that. but they have won me over with blake, probably because he's a good fellow, really similar to eliza and respects eliza as a private detective in her own right. it does feel a bit fast, maybe because of the past four seasons' pacing and also because, i'm assuming, a lot of things happened off-screen that we were not privy to.

i also find it interesting how sophia is clearly eliza's parallel, because were eliza to have a sibling and that sibling children, i think she would've made a great aunt.

i like how eliza finally has her own community, both at scotland yard and in her personal life, though the two bleed into each other quite a bit.

i don't believe it would've been a good decision to have william back at the potts' wedding, but at the same time, ivy and william had been close. perhaps a letter from william congratulating ivy would've been nice, i don't know.

oh, additionally, i've noticed a lack of smoking in miss scarlet! not in miss scarlet alone, but in newer period dramas as a whole (although mrs maisel is a strong exception), which intrigues me.

one, because, as far as i know, it was a prevalent habit by the 1880s, at least in the upper echelon. and yet, no smoking.

two, i live in a country where smoking is still quite common, so i unintentionally pick up on the lack of it.

i understand that it would probably only bring on technical difficulties (though the series is shot in belgrade, and smoking inside is still allowed in serbia), and probably health-related and legal complications when it comes to the actors.

i'm sad to admit it, but i liked him. not because i could see eliza having a future with him, rather because i like it when she gets the support in her work she needs and deserves, and also because she's an admirable woman, why not have her be admired?

i have been wondering ever since, if he was only acting and didn't actually appreciate eliza, and only used her for his own gain, or if it's a mix of both. i doubt we'll ever know, just food for thought.
